Russia-Ukraine war: NZ to train Ukrainians to use howitzer, sending 30 Defence Force personnel to Britain

New Zealand will send 30 troops to Britain to train Ukrainian forces how to use a type of howitzer.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern today said the Defence Force personnel would stay in the UK until the end of July for L119 light gun training.
The 105 mm calibre gun can be used in either offensive or defensive operations, according to the NZDF.

Ardern said New Zealand had been asked to help teach Ukrainians to use the guns, and Defence Force personnel would remain in the UK throughout the training.



Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Kevin Short said 230 Ukrainians would be trained and each training session would take about one week.

Ardern said no further training request had been made.

The PM said the new deployment was another way New Zealand could support Ukraine.

The New Zealand Army said vehicles usually towed L119s into position but the guns could also be carried as a sling load underneath a helicopter for faster deployment.

The system included wheels, suspension, a recoil system, saddle and elevating gearbox, according to manufacturer BAE Systems.


"Normal manning for the light gun is with a crew of six but it can be adequately operated by a crew of just three," a BAE brochure added.



The ordnance comprised a one-piece, forged barrel of 30 calibre (3.2m) length and a manually-operated breech.

Former Defence Minister Ron Mark has visited Ukraine, and for weeks has been arguing New Zealand do more to help the country after Russia's invasion.



Ardern said she was fond of Mark but disagreed with some of his recent comments and believed him being on the ground would not "add anything".


The howitzer training was more useful than having politicians visit in the middle of a war, she said.

The National Party supported the contribution and Cabinet decision announced today.


Sending troops to train Ukrainian soldiers was appropriate, and continued New Zealand's proportionate response to Russia's invasion, foreign affairs spokesman Gerry Brownlee said.



"The Government should be clear in signalling what next steps it is considering as part of New Zealand's ongoing response," he added.



The party's defence spokesman Tim van de Molen said the NZDF personnel and their expertise would help Ukraine's effort to defend against Russia's atrocities.



"It's important that New Zealand remains in step with our traditional partners in defence of our values," he added.

The Government has previously imposed five rounds of sanctions covering more than 700 individuals and entities connected to the Russian and Belarusian regimes.



New Zealand also previously approved deployment of a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130H Hercules aircraft and NZDF personnel to the United Kingdom and Europe.



The aircraft were supposed to provide intelligence, liaison, transportation and logistics support to the international community's efforts to support Ukraine's self-defence.


In late March, nine New Zealand Defence Force personnel were deployed to the UK and Belgium to support other countries with tasks including intelligence assessments.

The NZDF's open-source intelligence capability has also been used, and military equipment donated to Ukraine.



New Zealand has also invested about approximately $15.7 million to purchase military equipment for Ukraine, and commercial satellite access for Ukrainian Defence Intelligence.



New Zealand has also called for accountability for alleged Russian war crimes.


Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine's Ambassador to New Zealand, urged the Government two weeks ago to do more to support his country in its war with Russia.

Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin jailed for life over war crime

A court in Ukraine has jailed a Russian tank commander for life for killing a civilian at the first war crimes trial since the invasion.

Captured soldier Sgt Vadim Shishimarin was convicted of killing Oleksandr Shelipov, 62, in the north-eastern village of Chupakhivka on 28 February.

He admitted shooting Mr Shelipov but said he had been acting on orders and asked forgiveness of his widow.

Multiple other alleged war crimes are being investigated by Ukraine.

Moscow has denied its troops targeted civilians during the invasion while Ukraine says more than 11,000 crimes may have occurred.

This trial in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv is being seen as Ukraine's chance to prove, beyond doubt, that a Russian soldier killed a civilian with no regard for the rules of war.

Shishimarin, wearing a blue and grey hooded sweatshirt, watched proceedings silently from a reinforced glass box in the courtroom and showed no emotion as the verdict was read out, Reuters news agency reports.

Ahead of the verdict, Shishimarin's defence lawyer - appointed by the state - told BBC News no Russian official had been in touch with him. President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said the Kremlin had "no information" about this case.

At the time of the killing Shishimarin, 21, and other soldiers were travelling in a car they had seized after their convoy came under attack and they became separated from their unit.

When they spotted Mr Shelipov he was speaking on his phone, Shishimarin told the court. He says he was told to shoot him with an assault rifle.

His defence lawyer told the court on Friday that Shishimarin had only fired after twice refusing to carry out the order to shoot and that only one out of three to four rounds had hit the target.

He said Shishimarin had fired the rounds out of fear for his own safety and he questioned whether the defendant had intended to kill.

In one dramatic moment during the trial, the victim's widow Kateryna Shelipova confronted Shishimarin. "Tell me please, why did you [Russians] come here? To protect us?" she asked, citing Russian President Vladimir Putin's justification for the invasion of Ukraine.

The soldier had no answer to that. Asking forgiveness of the widow earlier, he said: "But I understand you won't be able to forgive me."

Mrs Shelipova told the BBC: "I feel very sorry for him but for a crime like that - I can't forgive him."

Cứ sau mỗi người lính tử trận là một gia đình đau khổ

Cho đến nay sự tổn thất quân sự bên phía Ukraine trong cuộc chiến kéo dài đã 3 tháng trời ít được nói đến, nhưng sự tổn thất này rất lớn, đó là điều chắc chắn. Tổng thống Selenzkyj ước lượng mỗi ngày có khoảng từ 50 đến 100 người thiệt mạng ở miền Đông tại các vùng tranh chấp gay go nhất.

Sau mỗi một sự tổn thất là một gia đình mang đau khổ. Ở thành phố Dnipro này cô Irina 35 tuổi từ Ý, nơi cô cùng 3 con đi tị nạn chiến tranh, trở về mai táng người chồng 38 tuổi của mình. Anh là thành viên của lực lượng đặc biệt Ukraine ở căn cứ miền Đông và bị thiệt mạng hồi đầu tháng sau cuộc pháo kích của Nga, theo lời cô kể.

"Cuộc chiến này vô nghĩa, rất ngu xuẩn. Không có lý do nào khiến anh ấy phải hi sinh", cô nói mắt ngấn lệ.  "Đây là một thảm kịch vô cùng lớn đối với chúng tôi".

Cô Kseniia, người em họ của cô nói, cô phản đối thỏa hiệp hưu chiến, cho phép lính Nga trú đóng trên đất Ukraine, là chuyện mà các nhà chức trách Ukraine hiện ít ra đã từ chối. 

Cô nói, "Có quá nhiều người bị giết hại rồi ... Chúng tôi phải chiến đấu cho quyền được sống và sự toàn vẹn lãnh thổ". "Vì lẽ đó mà anh trai tôi đã chiến đấu. Chúng tôi phải chiến đấu đánh đuổi lính Nga".

Tổng thống Ba Lan hôm qua, 22-05-2022, phát biểu tại Quốc hội Ukraina: "Những người dân Ukraina bắt buộc phải đi sang Ba Lan tránh chiến tranh không phải là những người tị nạn, họ là khách của chúng tôi". Điều này là sự thật. Gần 3 tháng qua, hơn 2 triệu người Ukraina đã sang Ba Lan, mà chính quyền Ba Lan vẫn không phải lập ra bất kỳ một trại tị nạn tạm thời, không lều bạt bẩn thỉu, không tệ nạn, không có sự xuất hiện của nhân viên Cao ủy Liên hiệp quốc về quyền con người... đại đa số người Ukraina được mời về ở cùng trong nhà các gia đình Ba Lan, một điều chưa từng có trong lịch sử các cuộc chiến từ trước tới nay.  

Gần 3 tháng trôi qua, khác với sự "mong đợi" của phía thân Nga, tuy nền kinh tế Ba Lan "gánh" thêm hơn 2 triệu phụ nữ, trẻ em, nhưng không sập. Tình trạng tội phạm không tăng, không có ai phải ăn xin trên đường phố, ngoài việc đi đến đâu cũng dễ dàng nghe thấy tiếng Ukraina, còn lại xã hội vẫn bình thường, thậm chí vẫn thiếu lao động trong những lĩnh vực xây dựng, lái xe tải, bởi vài trăm ngàn đàn ông Ukraina đã trở về tham gia bảo vệ Tổ quốc.

Nếu ai nhìn vào lịch sử đều biết người Ukraina đã từng giết hại 100.000 người Ba Lan trong thời kỳ thế chiến thứ 2 ở Volhynia, nhưng thay vì bây giờ gặm nhấm hận thù quá khứ, tranh thủ hả hê trả thù, người Ba Lan lại chìa tay chia sẻ, hỗ trợ người Ukraina những gì có thể.

Sự vĩ đại của một quốc gia được thể hiện qua suy nghĩ và những gì họ làm, không phải những gì tự ca ngợi, tự vinh danh. 

Và tương lai cũng vậy.

Slovakia T-72 tanks handed over to Ukraine spotted in the Donbass



After Slovakia handed over the T-72M2 tanks that were previously in service to Ukrainian units a few days ago, it became known that these vehicles had already been transferred to the Donbas. A video shared by many users in twitter on which Slovakia T-72M2 tanks can really be seen.

Information about the transfer of T-72M2 tanks by Slovakia was unofficial. However, the fact that this equipment was transferred to Ukraine became known just a few days ago. Nevertheless, if it was assumed that the tanks would be in the central part of Ukraine, it turned out that they were promptly transferred to the eastern direction.

On the presented video frames, you can see military equipment moving through one of the settlements, allegedly in the Donbass. Not only Slovak T-72M2s, but also Ukrainian T-64BM were seen in the convoy. The exact number of tanks transferred to the Donbass is not disclosed, however, according to a number of data, Slovakia could provide Ukraine with up to 24 main battle tanks of this type.

Earlier, Poland also announced its intentions to transfer up to 100 T-72 tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that  shortly after Slovakia supplied an S-300 air defense system to Ukraine to support its fight against Russia’s invasion, Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Naď has announced his country is in talks with the Ukrainian government over a potential sale of Zuzana 155 mm self-propelled howitzers.

“We are also discussing the possibility of having damaged Ukrainian combat vehicles and T-72 or T-55 tanks come to our territory, and our military repair plants would repair them and send them back to Ukraine,” Naď said, as reported by local news agency SITA.

About T-72M2

The T-72M2 Moderna is a Slovakian upgrade of the Soviet T-72 main battle tank. The T-72M was license-produced in the former Czechoslovakia. It entered service with the Czechoslovakian army in 1981. In the early 1990s after the dissolution of the Czechoslovakia, various upgrade programs were developed both in Czech Republic and Slovakia to keep their fleets of T-72 MBTs operational and combat capable. First prototype of the T-72M2 Moderna was revealed in 1993. Development of this tank is completed. For a number of years this upgrade was actively proposed for Slovak Army as well as export customers. However, it received no production orders. Slovakia never ordered this tank due to funding problems. Only few prototypes were built for trials and evaluation.

The T-72M2 Moderna has improved protection. The tank is fitted with DYNAS explosive reactive armor. The second prototype is fitted with a cage armor that provides protection against RPG rounds. The tank has a laser warning receiver. It notifies when the tank is illuminated by a laser beam and identifies direction of the threat. Then smoke grenades can be discharged to hide the tank. The tank is fitted with new automatic fire suppression system.

The tank is fitted with a modernized 2A45MS 125 mm smoothbore gun. The gun is fitted with an autoloader.

There is a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. The first prototype of this tank was fitted with two Swiss 20 mm cannons, mounted on either side of the turret. These could engage air and ground targets. The second prototype was fitted with a single 30 mm cannon, from the Soviet BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle.

The tank has got new VEGA fire control system, new ballistic computer and new sensors of Belgian and French origin. Vehicle commander uses panoramic sight. The same sight is used on the French Leclerc, and some other modern MBTs. This tank has got a hunter-killer engagement capability. Once commander spots and identifies the target, he lays the gun and lets the gunner complete all the aiming and firing process. During that time commander looks for the next target.

This main battle tank has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver.

The tank is fitted with a more powerful S12U turbocharged diesel engine, developing 850 hp. It is a Polish modernized version of the Soviet V-46-6 tank engine. It was used on the Polish PT-91 Twardy main battle tank. Even though upgraded tank is heavier it has improved cross-country mobility over the original T-72M.
