Rare salmonella strain found in Boston eatery

A potentially never-before-seen strain of salmonella was discovered at a Boston restaurant, triggering a Department of Public Health investigation and a recall of frozen coconut this month.
“This is a rare organism we’re looking at,” said Patricia Kludt, director of the state Department of Public Health epidemiology program. “We really don’t know what that means as far as people getting ill.”
Several strains of salmonella were discovered in connection with the product — Coconut Tree brand frozen shredded coconut — and in multiple states. The coconut is distributed in Ohio, Massachusetts, Washington, California, Oklahoma, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Florida and Texas.
But the rare strain was discovered here in Boston, Kludt said.
When the DPH lab tests samples, it analyzes the DNA fingerprint of organisms and posts it to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database.
The particular variety found locally was not found in the CDC database, meaning it could be the first of that strain found in the United States. The product is shipped from Vietnam.
“It’s possible the reason we haven’t seen this often or maybe not at all is that the strain came from out of the country,” Kludt said. “The food it’s found in is not from around here.”
Salmonella bacteria cause an infectious disease called “salmonellosis,” which primarily affects the bowel.
The name of the local restaurant has not yet been disclosed. The department will be working on an outbreak report over the next few weeks, after which the restaurant will be identified publicly.
The FDA on Jan. 3 announced Evershing International Trading Company’s voluntary recall of 16-ounce packages of Coconut Tree brand frozen shredded coconut “because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune system.”
