Một ông thầy chùa so đo số lần ‘views’, ‘likes’ và ‘subscribers’ trong đơn tố giác nhằm đưa một nhóm người tu tại gia vào tù. Đáng ngạc nhiên? Có lẽ không. Kết quả nghiên cứu khoa học chỉ ra rằng giới tu sĩ cũng là những người nằm trong nhóm có thói ganh tị khá cao.

Jealousy và Envy

Tiếng Việt chúng ta có vẻ dịch 2 chữ này là ‘ganh tị’, nhưng người phương Tây phân biệt 2 hành vi này khá tinh tế như sau:

• Jealousy là ghen tị, còn Envy là cay cú. Người ganh tị có cảm giác mình bị đe doạ và sợ người khác. Ghen tuông trong tình cảm là một ví dụ tiêu biểu.

• Envy có lẽ dịch là ‘phân bì’, là cảm thấy cay đắng trước sự sở hữu của người khác mà mình không có, hay sự thành công của người khác mà mình không đạt được. Nói một cách ngắn gọn, người envy thấy sự thành công của người khác là nỗi khổ của mình.

Hành vi của ông thầy chùa đề cập ở trên là thuộc nhóm ‘envy’ chớ không phải là ‘jealousy’. Điều kinh ngạc là ông này lại khuyên Phật tử là không nên ganh tị!

Dù là ghen tị hay phân bì (hay nói chung là ‘ganh tị’), thì hành vi đó vẫn được xem là xấu xa. Phật giáo gọi ganh tị là “tật đố”, có nghĩa là thù ghét những ai hơn mình về quyền thế và chuyên môn. Người đố kị sẽ không thể nào giác ngộ và lúc nào cũng tự làm khổ mình. Trong Công giáo, Thánh Thomas d’Aquino xem ganh tị là một trong những tội chết người của nhân loại. Chữ envy (ganh tị) do đó có nguồn từ tiếng Latin, ‘invidere’, có nghĩa là nhìn người khác với tà tâm và thù ghét.

Ganh tị trong giới có học

Người thường (ngoài khoa học) ganh tị thì đã được bàn nhiều. Nhưng còn một loại ganh tị hiện hữu trong giới chuyên môn, mà tiếng Anh gọi là “Professional Jealousy” (ganh tị nghề nghiệp). Loại ganh tị này có thể làm gãy vỡ các mối liên hệ xã hội, và nó biến kẻ ganh tị không chỉ thành xấu xí mà còn nguy hiểm.

Ngành nghề nào có ganh tị nặng nề nhứt? Triết gia người Ý Signor Ferriani được xem là một trong những chuyên gia có nhiều nghiên cứu về tâm lí nghề nghiệp. Ông có công phát triển một thang điểm để đánh giá mức độ ganh tị nghề nghiệp. Theo Ferriani giới chuyên môn trong các ngành nghề sau đây ganh tị (từ cao đến thấp):


• diễn viên (cao nhứt);

• bác sĩ (cao nhì);

• nhà văn;

• nhà báo;

• giáo sư về khoa học và văn học;

• sĩ quan trong quân đội;

• luật sư;

• tu sĩ;

• kiến trúc sư (thấp nhứt).

Như có thể thấy trong thang điểm trên, giới y khoa có tánh ganh tị thuộc vào hàng cao nhứt, chỉ sau giới diễn viên. Ngạc nhiên? Theo một số nghiên cứu, thì giới y khoa ganh tị với nhau ngay từ thời còn đi học, vì họ phải cạnh tranh để được vào trường y, và khi đã tốt nghiệp thì còn phải cạnh tranh để được vào các chuyên khoa, và khi đã vào chuyên khoa còn phải cạnh tranh để được công nhận (recognition), thăng tiến trong khoa bảng (như đề bạt chức giáo sư chẳng hạn).

Giới bác sĩ, theo Ferriani, thể hiện tánh ganh tị của họ qua việc chê hay nói xấu đồng nghiệp, và chữ ‘lang băm’ hay được dùng. Họ thường nhìn đồng nghiệp với ánh mắt nghi ngờ như là những kẻ đe doạ đến sự nghiệp họ.

Điều đáng ngạc nhiên là tu sĩ mà cũng nằm trong danh sách các nhóm có thói ganh tị! Nhưng may mắn là họ thuộc vào nhóm có mức độ ganh tị tương đối thấp so với nghệ sĩ và bác sĩ. Tuy nhiên, trường hợp ông thầy chùa đề cập trên có lẽ là một ngoại lệ hơn là qui luật.

Người ganh tị không nhắm đến những người cao hơn họ quá xa, mà chỉ nhắm đến người có cùng chuyên ngành và tương đương với họ. Chẳng hạn như họ không ganh tị với người có giải Nobel (vì quá xa đối với họ), nhưng lại rất ghen ghét đối với những người cùng đẳng cấp hay có khả năng gần bằng nhau với họ. Người ăn xin ganh tị với những người ăn xin khác thành công hơn họ, chứ họ không ganh tị với những người triệu phú.

Kẻ ganh tị cảm thấy đau khổ vì sự kém cỏi của mình không có khả năng như ‘đối tượng’. Khi một bác sĩ nhi khoa viết một cuốn sách về khảo cổ nổi tiếng, thì anh ta bị giới khảo cổ chê bai một cách vu vơ (kiểu “anh ấy mà biết gì”, “coi chừng những luận điểm của anh ta”) mà không chỉ ra được cái sai nào. Người ta ganh tị anh bác sĩ vì anh đã làm được cái mà họ không làm được, và thế là lấy ‘chuyên môn’ ra làm cái bình phong. Thành ra, nỗi đau của người ganh tị được mô tả như là một cảm giác trống không, thất bại. Giống như trong Tam Quốc Chí Diễn Nghĩa, La Quán Trung đã cho Chu Du than một cách thống khổ rằng “Trời đã sinh ra Du sao còn sinh Lượng?”

Giống như trong các môn phái võ lâm, trong khoa học cũng có môn phái và họ cạnh tranh với nhau. Từ cạnh tranh bè phái dẫn đến những phản ứng mang tính phòng vệ như mỉa mai, miệt thị, hợm hĩnh, và ái kỉ. Tất cả những hình thức phản ứng này có một mẫu số chung là dùng sự khinh miệt để tối thiểu hóa mối đe dọa đến từ người khác. Điều này giải thích tại sao những người có thói ganh tị thường hay tìm cách nói xấu và miệt thị người khác như là những kẻ bất tài và vô dụng, và qua đó, nhằm tự nâng cao tầm vóc của mình. Trước sự thành công của người khác, kẻ ganh tị thường tìm về cái gốc (‘bộ lạc’) của người đó, và họ có cớ để nói kiểu như ‘Nó chỉ may mắn ở trong nhóm đó thôi, chớ chẳng có tài cán gì’.

Tóm lại, để trả lời câu hỏi có hay không có ganh tị trong khoa học, câu trả lời dứt khoát là ‘có’ và người ta gọi là ‘Academic Envy’ (khác với ganh tị trong các ngành nghề khác là ‘Professional Jealousy’). Dù dùng danh từ gì thì ganh tị về bản chất là một tánh xấu, và nó thường có ở những người thiếu tự tôn.

Đối diện với một người thành công hơn và tài giỏi hơn, người ta thường có 2 phản ứng trái ngược nhau: ngưỡng mộ và ganh tị. Ngưỡng mộ giúp cho người ta phấn đấu để trở thành tốt hơn, tri ân hơn, và ghi nhận thực tế tốt hơn. Nhưng ganh tị thì có tác động ngược lại vì nó không chỉ làm gãy vỡ các mối liên hệ xã hội mà làm cho kẻ ganh tị trở nên độc địa trong suy nghĩ và việc làm. Trường hợp ông thầy chùa là một ví dụ tiêu biểu, vì thiếu tự tôn nên ông so đo từng con số ‘likes’ và ‘views’ rồi đi đến những phán xét xúc phạm người khác một cách nặng nề và tự biến ông thành một người độc ác.

Tui muốn học cách viết văn sao cho hay thiệt là hay ho, cough cough ... ahem ...  bằng cả hai ngôn ngữ, hy vọng là mình không quá tham lam  .... Vậy xin hỏi bí quyết làm sao để viết văn tiếng Mỹ và tiếng Việt hay?

Theo tui nghĩ, có lẻ khởi đầu bằng văn phạm? Vậy xin hỏi các bạn văn phạm Mỹ và Việt khác nhau ra sao? Và ngoài văn phạm ra còn bí huyết gì khác không?
