Russia is the most direct threat. NATO’s new strategic concept adopted
NATO's new Strategic Concept has officially changed Russia's status in relations with the Alliance and identifies Russia as the most serious and immediate threat to Allied security.
The concept, the text of which is available to European Truth, was adopted at a summit of NATO leaders on 29 June.
"The Russian Federation is the most serious and immediate threat to Allied security, as well as to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area," reads the text of the adopted concept, which sets out NATO's strategy for the next decade.
At the same time, the Alliance emphasizes that it does not seek confrontation with Russia and does not pose a threat to Russia.
The concept does not specify whether the Alliance considers Russia its enemy or adversary, but is ready for aggression on its part. "No one should doubt our strength and determination to defend every inch of Allied territory, protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Allies, and defeat any aggressor," the document said.
The current decision reflects a sharp change in the security situation in Europe due to the war in Ukraine, as in a previous concept adopted in 2010, NATO identified Russia as its strategic partner. The decision also notes that Russia seeks to establish spheres of influence and direct control through coercion, subversion and annexation.
"It uses conventional, cyber and hybrid means against us and our partners. Its aggressive military stance and rhetoric, as well as its proven willingness to use force to achieve its political goals, undermine the rules-based international order," the leaders said in a statement.
European Truth will soon publish an annotated explanation of NATO's new strategic document.
Earlier on Thursday, US President Joe Biden announced a significant increase in the US presence in Europe due to the Russian threat.
