@0650 and on, I had an interesting conversation with a stranger (retired professor) during a walk in the park a couple weeks ago.  Conversation went from the VN war to religion to current politics :-) and to this topic too.  He said all the bad things happening (with priests) is because of the strict requirement of celibacy of priesthood.  I just smiled and said so I guess married men never have affairs or pedophile etc... He said no.  I said but you premised your solution on sexual gratification?  So if your answer is no then that is not the root of the problem, no?  

So the meaning of celibacy in priesthood is similar to the meaning of marriage of a common person.  When one is married he/she stays faithful to that 'soul mate' and forsakes all others; just as a priest is 'married to his God' and such he is expected to stay faithful to 'God'.  It is a commitment that takes all the might, the will, and the LOVE one has to live fully to that commitment and one that not many of us can keep.  Some will fall but others have been successful.
