Overnight, the Paypal founder Elon Musk has been promoting his idea for a "kid-sized submarine" that could be sent to help boys trapped in a flooded Thailand cave, should conditions change and the current method of rescue become untenable.
Musk posted videos on Twitter of the aluminium sub being tested at a swimming pool by his Space X company. They had said that if the tests were successful, the sub would be placed on a flight to Thailand, and Musk later tweeted: "Mini-sub arriving in about 17 hours. Hopefully useful."
A spokesman for Musk's Boring Co tunnelling unit, which has four engineers at the cave, has said Thai officials requested the device, which could potentially help the children through narrow, flooded cave passageways.
Musk has come in for some criticism for his involvement in the rescue operation, accused of using it as a publicity stunt. After one Twitter user accused him of "narcissism" and "leverag[ing] every public situation for your own aggrandizement", he replied: "If I am a narcissist (which might be true), at least I am a useful one."

Gosh, feel like you need to leverage every public situation for your own aggrandizement much? You do know there are hundreds of experts already working this across multiple counties, no? #narcissism
