Superstitious Thais look to boys for lucky numbers

[Image: 1d21829f-1283-4881-8c08-4c4c9d233c3e.jpg]
Lottery ticket seller Sarirat Ladloy ® says that customers have been choosing key numbers from the rescue -- like 13, 23 and 38.Reuters

Outside the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital where four boys are recovering after spending two weeks in a cave, lottery ticket seller Sarirat Ladloy says business is brisk.

"There are three numbers that people are looking for the most -- 13, 23 and 38. The 13 number is because of the team (the twelve boys plus their coach). Twenty-three is referring to the day they went into the cave," she told Reuters.

"Thirty-eight is referring to the number of Navy SEALs. I make very good sales," she said.

Even while buying lottery tickets, though, passersby voiced their concern about the boys' safety.

Resident Bualee Bamrung said that she is "watching the news every day. I am worried about them like they are my kids. I hope they come out safely."

Overnight, the Paypal founder Elon Musk has been promoting his idea for a "kid-sized submarine" that could be sent to help boys trapped in a flooded Thailand cave, should conditions change and the current method of rescue become untenable.

Musk posted videos on Twitter of the aluminium sub being tested at a swimming pool by his Space X company. They had said that if the tests were successful, the sub would be placed on a flight to Thailand, and Musk later tweeted: "Mini-sub arriving in about 17 hours. Hopefully useful."

A spokesman for Musk's Boring Co tunnelling unit, which has four engineers at the cave, has said Thai officials requested the device, which could potentially help the children through narrow, flooded cave passageways.

Musk has come in for some criticism for his involvement in the rescue operation, accused of using it as a publicity stunt. After one Twitter user accused him of "narcissism" and "leverag[ing] every public situation for your own aggrandizement", he replied: "If I am a narcissist (which might be true), at least I am a useful one."

Gosh, feel like you need to leverage every public situation for your own aggrandizement much? You do know there are hundreds of experts already working this across multiple counties, no? #narcissism

[i]Adul Sam-on

12 boys trapped in a Thai cave with coach

THE BOYS

Adul Sam-on, 14
Born state-less in Myanmar, and raised by Christian teachers in Thailand, Adul Sam-on’s unflinching politeness and startling ability to speak English is capturing hearts.

Adul – who also speaks Thai, Burmese, and Chinese – is being praised for his English skills in a country where less than a third of the population speaks the language.

He was the only one able to communicate with the British divers that discovered the boys on Monday night.

‘What day is it?’ he shouted, telling the divers they were hungry, in footage broadcast around the world after the percent search for the boys.

Multilingual frontman: As the only English-speaker in the cave, Myanmar-born Adul Sam-on has become the ‘face’ of the 12 boys trapped in the cave

Communicator: A thin Adul Sam-on is seen in footage broadcast around the world after the group were found by British divers
Born in Myanmar’s self-governing Wa State, he left his family behind aged seven to get a better education in northern Thailand, but his parents still visit him at the Christian Church where he’s been taken in.

With no birth certificate, no ID card and no passport, Adul cannot legally marry, get a job or bank account, travel, own property or vote, but he refuses to let his status hold him back.

The passionate footballer also loves to play the piano and guitar and is an accomplished student too.

Duangpetch Promthep, 13
Duangpetch, also known as Dom, is the team captain of Wild Boar FC and his family told local news he is the motivator of the group.

His teammates told The Guardian that say ‘he has the qualities of a leader and a good sense of a ‘ and is such a talented footballer he has been asked to try out for the top local teams.

Leader and newbie: Duangpetch Promthep, 13, left, is the team captain of Wild Boar FC, while Mongkol Boonpiam, 14, right, joined just a year ago

Mongkol Boonpiam, 14
Mongkol’s father Thinnakorn said his son is a ‘good boy’ who loves to study – almost as much as football.

He joined the Wild Boar FC team a year ago, and on June 23, he had gone to Saturday practice like he has done many times before, and his family was long unaware of the trek to the cave.

Ekkarat Wongsookchan, 14
Ekkarat is also known as ‘Bew’ and is one of Wild Boar FC’s two goalkeepers.

Trial: Pipat Bodhi, 15, was looking at joining the team to spend time with Ekkarat

Pipat is reportedly not a player for Wild Boar FC, but had joined the team for a practice session before they embarked on their trek to the caves.

He was hoping to be able to join the team so he could spend more time with goalkeeper Ekkarat, who is his best friend.

Prajak Sutham, 14
Prajak shares the role of the goalkeeper with Ekkarat, and is called Note by friends and family.

A quiet but sport-loving boy, Note’s medals are on display in the courtyard of the family’s modest home in a village outside Mae Sai.
He loved playing for the Wild Boar football team and ; he to play for the provincial team when he is older.

Pictures of Note graduating from Kindergarten and primary school are displayed in pride of place in the family home, and his parents have kept a 24-hour vigil at the entrance of the Thamg Luang cave.

Sompong Jaiwong, 13

Midfielder Sompong, known as Pong, supports England and dreams of becoming a footballer and representing his nation, according to his former teacher.

‘Pong is a cheerful boy; he likes football and every sport. He dreams of becoming a footballer for the Thai national team,’ the teenager’s teacher Manutsanun Kuntun told AFP, using his nickname.
‘Our class is still confident he will be OK,’ she said.

Pong’s family said yesterday that he supports Liverpool, ‘would love England to win’ the World Cup in Russia and loves Three Lions captain Harry Kane.

THE COACH
Ekkapol Chantawong, 25
Ekkapol was just 12 when he lost his seven-year-old brother, mother, and father as an illness that spread through his home.

Quite a bit has happened so far today.

The main thing to note, of course, is that the third and hopefully final rescue mission began a few hours ago, with the intention of bringing out all four boys, their 25-year-old coach, and the doctor and the navy Seals who have been in the cave with them. We’ll bring you updates as we get them about that mission.

  • 19 divers went back into the cave system at 10.08am, local time.
  • Authorities hope the mission can be completed even faster than yesterday’s nine hours, which shaved two hours off the total time of the first mission.
  • Conditions remain similar to previous days, despite heavy rains overnight.
  • From the information released about the rescued boys, it’s understood the youngest, aged just 11, as well as the coach remain in the cave.
  • Health officials say the first four boys rescued have now seen their parents - through a glass window - and will soon get to speak to them. The second group of four are expected to also reunite with their parents soon.
  • The boys are in good health, although two have “minor” lung infections, and all are wearing sunglasses after spending more than two weeks in near total darkness.
  • They are undergoing further tests, and have been kept away from TVs so as not to impact their mental health.
  • They are also not yet allowed to eat the rich Thai food they’ve been requesting - so far it’s diluted porridge, bread, and some chocolate.
  • They will remain in hospital for at least seven days, meaning they won’t make it to the World Cup finals, which they were invited to by the president of Fifa.
  • Elon Musk has shown up with his mini-submarine and left it at the site, but the rescue chief has said it’s not of any use.
