Officials with Caven's Meats are issuing a voluntary recall of approximately 70 pounds of ham because of a processing deviation and possible contamination with Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin.

The bacterium can cause a range of illnesses from food poisoning to minor skin infections to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, toxic shock syndrome and sepsis.

According to the announcement made Tuesday evening through the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the products subject to recall include:

Hickory Smoked Baked Ham -- Water Added
  • The products were produced Dec. 27-29
  • They were sold directly from Caven’s Meats Inc., 7850 U.S. 36, in Brown Twp.
  • The packaging is white plastic deli style in quantities from a quarter-pound to 2 pounds
  • The label will bear establishment No. EST. 56 inside the Ohio mark of inspection
  • The label will contain a packed-on date range of Dec. 30, 2017, through Feb. 2
The ODA Division of Meat Inspection discovered the problem through the review of records during a directed in-plant inspection verification.
ODA and company officials have received no reports of adverse reactions from the consumption of these products.
Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Caven's Meats urges customers that have purchased these products not to consume them. These products should be discarded or returned to the company.
