Jamie Raskin Destroys Donald Trump’s ‘Sickening’ Alexei Navalny Comparison

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said it was “absolutely appalling” that Donald Trump would compare himself to the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

“Donald Trump’s hero, Vladimir Putin, is responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny ... who was a champion of freedom and human rights, and he opposed the filthy, bloody imperialist invasion of Ukraine, which Donald Trump is, at best, very soft on,” Raskin said Wednesday on CNN.

“In fact, he’s Putin’s biggest ally in the United States and is responsible for now the pro-Putin sentiment within the GOP,” he added. “So to compare himself to Navalny is sickening.”

Raskin called Trump a “friend to every dictator and autocrat on earth” and noted the former president has had “every benefit of the rule of law and the American legal system” to fight the assorted civil and criminal cases against him.

Navalny, a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died in custody in a Russian penal colony last week.

Western leaders were quick to blame Putin’s regime for Navalny’s death. Trump, however, remained mute on the matter for several days and then declined to condemn Putin (or mention him at all) when he broke his silence Monday in a statement invoking his own legal issues to suggest he is a victim of political persecution.

At a Fox News town hall on Tuesday, while discussing the $355 million judgment against him for fraudulent business practices, he called it “a form of Navalny.”

Trump has praised Putin for years while undermining relationships with U.S. allies, and under his stranglehold over the party, there has been growing Republican resistance to aiding Ukraine.

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) warned over the weekend that the 2024 election must prevent the “Putin wing of the Republican Party” from taking over the White House.

‘I gave up a job that I loved passionately’: My husband secretly set up a trust that includes our home and his investments. What should I do?

Dear Quentin,

My husband and I married 10 years ago. It was a second marriage for both of us. I recently found out that after five years of marriage, he put all of our assets into trusts controlled by him alone. At that time, at his request, I also gave up a job that I loved passionately so we could establish a stable home for his youngest daughter. He also has three other children who had already launched.

nstead of having a high-level job with bonuses and accolades, I ran one of his companies with no pay. I also drove his daughter’s carpool, allowed his adult son and his son’s children to move in with us, and ran our home in a smooth and efficient manner. I acted as a good steward of his assets so he could maximize his retirement and investments. I also added substantial assets to our portfolio with my “hobby” of real-estate investing.

I’m a team player and thought that upon retirement we would live the life we dreamed about during the early days of our marriage — I expected he would retire at 65 and we would travel the world. Our portfolio is worth 10 times what it was when we married. His retirement account and several IRAs were opened after we were married.

Irrevocable trust for his children

He put everything, even our home and my investment properties, into a trust, with his friend as trustee. I had been the beneficiary of his retirement account, but now the trust is. I believe this change of beneficiary was forged. He invested in a company that stands to make a lot of money, and that investment was put into an irrevocable trust for his children only. His children have quit their jobs to create startups with funding from their dad. At 69, he feels he can’t retire because he’s helping his kids.

I told him that if I outlived him, I would give everything I inherited from him to his children, and my assets would go to my family. When confronted about the trusts, he said he assumed I’d be OK with that because of my promise to give his assets to his kids. I’m not even a 50% beneficiary. I’m terrified his kids will boot me out of my home or declare me incompetent when I’m a little old lady just trying to sit on the beach. I don’t even have kids of my own to look out for me.  

He can’t understand why I’m upset. Now I’m nearing retirement age with no extra investments in my retirement account, no credit for the work I’ve done and no say in my assets. I don’t even have a work history for the past 10 years and can’t get a job. Is this even legal? If I bring an attorney in, it will ruin the marriage. I can’t even contest the will because it states if anyone contests the will, they will have nothing.

With most things, I’m smart. But gosh, I’ve been so stupid. What are my options?

Dear Ex-Wife,

Secret trusts and a possible forgery do not constitute a healthy marriage.

There’s nothing stopping a spouse from setting up a trust during a marriage, but they should do so with separate assets. To set up a trust with separate assets without telling your spouse is bad manners, but to create a trust with both separate and marital assets, in secret, is a recipe for a legal battle and divorce court. Marital assets are those that are accumulated during the marriage.

Sometimes in life, you have to make a choice: You can stand back and allow your husband to squirrel away marital property and thereby “save” your marriage on paper — even though he has broken your faith in him and in the marriage. Or you can call a lawyer and perhaps a forensic accountant to examine the contents of the trust and trace their origins, and thereby risk your marriage.

“While there are legitimate reasons for a spouse to set up a trust during marriage, sometimes it is done in order to improperly shield assets from equitable distribution,” according to Jewell Law PLLC in New York. “Often, the non-beneficiary spouse is not aware of the trust or thinks the money came from another source such as a family member.”

Transparency is key to marital estate planning. “A trust set up in one spouse’s name can be considered separate property regardless of whether it is set up before or after marriage,” the law firm adds. “However, when it is created during a marriage, the non-beneficiary spouse must raise the question of whether any marital assets have been put into the trust.”

“This is a situation in which a prenuptial agreement could have been helpful to confirm — and protect — the rights of each spouse in the event of divorce or death,” says Neil V. Carbone, a partner at Farrell Fritz, P.C. ”State law governs a spouse’s inheritance rights. Most states provide a surviving spouse with a minimum ‘elective’ share, that is, the right to take a share of a deceased spouse’s property regardless of what a will or revocable lifetime trust agreement provides.”

“The idea of the elective share is to avoid the complete disinheritance of a surviving spouse, so ‘no contest’ clauses are ineffective to defeat the demand for an elective share,” he adds.  “What goes into the elective share ‘pot’ will vary from state to state. For example, in New York, life insurance is not included in determining the elective share. Some people may seek to defeat a spouse’s elective share rights by transferring property to an irrevocable trust, but they generally must survive a look-back period in order for the transferred property to be excluded.”

Potential forgery

Some retirement plans require a spouse to be the primary beneficiary. If your husband changed the beneficiary on a qualified retirement plan without your consent this should be challenged. Other retirement plans, such as IRAs, do not carry the same spousal-consent requirements. You can read more about what plans are covered under the Retirement Equity Act here.

Many people are surprised to learn that 401(k)s and IRAs are treated differently,” Carbone says. The former are governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 and, typically, a spouse must consent in writing to have someone else named as beneficiary, he adds. “IRAs are not governed by ERISA and the spouse’s consent is not required to designate a non-spouse as a beneficiary.” If your husband did forge your consent on a 401(k) beneficiary designation form, you should act ASAP.

While you process that information, I have other questions for you to mull over: What are you hanging onto? The illusion of a happy marriage? The promise of financial security, even though that seems increasingly unlikely? The damage to your marriage has already been done by your husband. By hiring a lawyer after so many years of acquiescing to his requests, you would be merely cleaning up the fallout from his actions.

One final piece of advice: If you are considering divorce, you would be better off waiting until your 10th wedding anniversary. After that date, you will be able to receive spousal Social Security benefits. If he earned more than you during your marriage, you are entitled to a maximum of 50% of your husband’s full retirement benefit.

You’ve given up a lot for your husband. Yes, you did it willingly, but you contributed your time and financial expertise to your husband’s businesses, and any right-thinking divorce court would not be likely to look kindly on your husband’s actions. Not all stepmothers abide by their promise to distribute assets to their late spouse’s children, but this is not an excuse for his actions.

In addition to forgery and financial skullduggery, you can add gaslighting to the list of his misdeeds.

How To Correct Your Posture - 5 Home Exercises To Fix Your Posture




Poor posture can result in neck pain, shoulder knots/tension, and headache pain. As a physical therapist these are common complaints I treat in my clinic - oftentimes these issues correlate directly with a person's posture. Today I'm sharing 5 of my favorite exercises you can do at home to help correct these postural issues.

As a physical therapist, I treat many posture related problems.

The thing is – people don’t come in to my clinic complaining of “bad posture“. People come into my clinic complaining of the symptoms that are typically associated with bad posture. Neck pain, knots in your upper shoulders, headache pain, etc. are typically related to poor posture.

These are the complaints for which people typically seek Physical Therapy help; little do these patients know how many of them wouldn’t be in any pain if they just spent some time addressing their posture!

Today on Tone and Tighten I wanted to discuss these postural issues – specifically what is poor posture, why you developed it, and some simple exercises you can do to correct this problem.

WHAT IS POOR POSTURE?

Poor posture is typically characterized by what we refer to as a “forward head and rounded shoulders“ posture. When you stand up straight and tall, if I were to look at your profile from the side your ear should be directly located over the tip of your shoulder. Your sternum/chest should be pointed up with your shoulder blades sent back. This is what “good“ posture looks like.

In this position, gravity holds your head squarely on top your neck with very minimal muscle activation required. This results in minimal tension, decreased muscle knots, and decreased muscle activation.

WHY DOES POSTURE MATTER?

Again, bad posture is typically characterized by a “forward head and rounded shoulders“. Forward head refers to the position of your head relative to your shoulders. It simply means that if I were to look at your standing posture from the profile view your ear would be out in front of the tip of your shoulder.

This typically causes a “rounding“ forward of the shoulder blades and an increased visible “hump“ in the upper back.

In this position, your head is not in an ideal anatomical location. Gravity would cause it to flop forward if not for some muscle activation to hold it up. So to prevent your head from flopping forward you must activate the muscles in your neck and upper shoulders.

15–30 minutes at a time this might be OK, but when you spend 8 – 12 – 16 hours in this position, those muscles can get extremely fatigued.

The result is increased tension in your neck, pain with movement, stiffness, knots in your upper shoulders, and even headaches.

HOW TO TREAT POOR POSTURE

The muscles in your body are highly adaptable to stresses placed on them or removed from them.

Our forward head and rounded shoulders posture typically results in what we refer to as an “upper cross syndrome“. The muscles through the front of your chest and back of your neck get tight while the muscles through your upper back and front of your neck get stretched out and week.

The treatment for this poor posture issue is to basically reverse our “upper cross syndrome“. We need to stretch where it’s tight (upper chest, front of the shoulders, and neck) and strengthen where it’s weak (rhomboids and middle traps – between your shoulder blades).

Performing these exercises regularly will help to improve your posture. In fact many of my patients notice a significant improvement in about a month; it might be up to 3 months to see a remarkable improvement (it took your body a long time to develop poor posture; it’s going to take some time and effort to reverse this problem). You have to be diligent and consistent, but I know these can help you out!

My mother always used me in whatever way it suited her to get what she wanted. I could tell a lot of stories, but let’s go with this one from my younger years. When I was a teenager, I started working as soon as I was old enough to do so. It was important to me to have my own source of income, because my mother was not much help, either forcing me to go without or buying the wrong things and forcing me to make do. Let me clarify before anyone gets the wrong idea there.

Example: When puberty hit, I was not allowed to buy any pads or tampons because she said I was too young and it was not time for this. I was 12, and regardless of her opinion, it WAS happening and I needed the things, and bleeding through my pants at school was humiliating. After a long time getting creative on my own out of desperation, she finally agreed that I could have some pads. So she went out and bought me those miniature “light days” kinds that were nowhere near enough. Even if I carefully used 3 or 4 at a time, placed like puzzle pieces, it wasn’t working. I tried to tell her, she dismissed me, I persisted, I got beat up for it. I gave up and kept it to myself, while she ridiculed me for trying to wash the stains out of my underwear and hide it so she wouldn’t hit me again. Apparently it was my fault that what she chose wasn’t enough; I was doing it on purpose….?

I dreamed of the day when I could go with my own money and just get what I needed without anyone else’s opinion or involvement. So that’s the kind of thing I’m referring to here. There I was, working my first job, buying the things I needed or wanted for myself and saving up my little paychecks for the future. I’d saved up about $800 and was still working the job, so for a teenager in the 90’s, I felt like I was off to a good start. I had put the money in my very first bank account, but I wasn’t 18 yet, so guess who volunteered to sign as the adult on a joint account…

My best friend at the time got lucky and was the first of our little group to get his drivers license and an old used car as a celebratory gift from his father. So we were excited and planning a trip with all our closest friends to the big local Fair, our favorite time in the whole year, and it would be our first time on our own with our own money. I decided this was a worthy reason to withdraw some of my savings and make sure we all had the time of our lives. So I bounded into the bank with my best friend in tow and told the teller I’d like to withdraw 200. She said she couldn’t. I said “oh, do you need my mother’s permission? I’ll call her”. The teller said “no, it’s not that. It’s that you don’t have sufficient funds to withdraw anything”. WHAT?? It turned out that my mother had withdrawn the whole $800 for herself about a week before and not said a word to me about it.

I called her immediately. Her response was a cold reality check for teenaged me. She said that she’d needed the money for something, but had no intention of replacing it. She said that, as my mother, she had every right to that money and I had no right to ask her about it. Whatever I earn, she is entitled to, because I am her property. In fact, she said that I owed HER money, because she’d driven me to that job herself many times (5 minutes from home, at a mall she frequented anyway), and not only was she entitled to my paychecks, but also I owed her for the inconvenience. I never got that money back. I wasn’t stupid enough to keep depositing to that account after that, but no matter what I did, she bullied me out of my money anyway. I was back to zero, and every hour I worked was only for her benefit.

Fast forward to college. Getting closer to graduation, maybe 2 or 3 semesters to go. About 20 years old now. I’m starting to think a lot about my soon-to-come real adult life. Friends are telling me I need to establish credit for the future, so I’m looking at student-friendly credit cards, and changing any bill payments (cell phone, etc) that were personally mine from my mother’s name to my own. Just getting it all in place to avoid future issues. I got a huge surprise. Apparently I had credit already, quite a few years’ worth, a lot of delinquencies and negative remarks, and my score was terrible. What the hell?? Credit cards I’d failed to pay off, leases that I’d stopped paying, online purchases where I still owed money and hadn’t made a payment in months, all kinds of things. It wasn’t possible. I’d never done anything like that, not ever. I didn’t even know anything about that stuff yet. I didn’t have any credit/debit card or account; I couldn’t possibly have signed up for or purchased these things. And I certainly hadn’t met with anyone and signed a lease for anything.

I learned how to challenge credit stuff and report fraud and identity theft very early in life. And I’ll give you one guess who was the one behind all that….. Mommy dearest had destroyed her own credit and spent all her money again, so she took my social security number and started shopping with my name. Apparently she’d been doing it for years and didn’t give a damn if it harmed me, or how I’d feel when I realized it. I challenged it all and I won, but it took a very long time, and she lied her way out of any consequences somehow, manipulative monster that she is. The really sick thing is that I had to watch my credit closely after that, because she kept right on trying to do it. I STILL have to watch. Even after almost a decade of no contact, 37 years old, credit bad enough already from my own struggles and emergencies over the years, and STILL sometimes I see something that was probably her and I have to fight it again.

She stole my identity and wrecked things for me 3 times in total, that I know of…. She even used my name along with false information to get around things, which is STILL popping up and causing me problems here and there. Never once apologized, explained herself or tried to make it up to me. Never once, wouldn’t even admit it even when the evidence was there in her house.

I’ll throw in one more before I bring this story home here. Because it’s just a shame not to mention it.

When I was 29 or 30, right before I finally escaped her clutches and disappeared for good to another state. My mother showed up at my door for one of her unplanned and unwelcome visits, as usual. She looked really satisfied with herself and she couldn’t resist telling me why. Apparently she’d found some online company and purchased a life insurance policy on me. She was going on like a kid in a toy store, telling me how much money she’d get if something happened to me, and which kinds of deaths she thought would be the easiest payout. She wasn’t directly threatening me (I guess?). Her attitude was very chipper and friendly as she said all this. But I was understandably disturbed by the whole thing. I wasn’t ill. I wasn’t handicapped. I wasn’t old. I wasn’t doing drugs. I didn’t work a particularly dangerous job, or have any hobbies or acquaintances that would make my early demise likely. So what the hell did she have in mind??

After she left, I checked out the website she was talking about. It was true. There was a life insurance policy in my name, and the payments were from her account. I asked to cancel it and told them it had been a mistake. There was a lot of confusion. I’m not sure what the answer was in the end. It might still be active. All I know is that for a couple weeks after that, my mother suggested a lot of unusual outings together, just the two of us. I got the distinct impression that she was planning something, and I kept refusing to get in the car. She tried a few times to “accidentally” reverse into me, and weird things like that. But that was nothing new. She’d hit me with her car on purpose a few times in the past, and deliberately cut off a Mack truck one day, trying to kill us both, or just get attention for herself. Can’t be sure; her moods changed pretty fast. But this time, it really sounded like she was trying to put me into positions where some kind of traffic accident was likely. I had told some friends, just in case anything happened to me.

Actually just the other day I was looking for something in an old social media account, and I stumbled upon one of those messenger conversations, where my friend was really concerned and urging me to stay away from my mother. We must have switched from some other method of communication, because only the tail end of the conversation is there. Something about an area we knew to be high-traffic, lots of accidents, that my mother was determined to take me to for some reason, but my gut was telling me no. That’s what got me remembering this after all these years.

In case you’re wondering, it was actually a pocket-dialed conversation between her and her husband that I heard, where she said HORRIBLE things about the kind of person I am, and finished it off with another racist rant about my boyfriend at the time. On her way to my house… That was the end. After what I’d heard, in the midst of everything else, I was finished with her. So when she pulled up, I repeated everything I’d just heard (while she interrupted me to tell me I was the one in the wrong because I shouldn’t have heard that), I told her off, I told her she’s a damn racist too, I told her never to think of me again. I cut off contact that day. I moved soon after, changed my number, told all long-time people in my life who wanted to stay in contact to stop using my real name and stick with nicknames, made it very clear that whatever threats or emotional displays they get from her that they are to respond “I don’t know where she is” and WALK AWAY. I never saw her again, or any of the family for that matter, and I don’t plan to. The monster and her flying monkeys can’t hurt me if they can’t find me…

1/ I thought you might want to know that you can contact the three major credit companies and freeze your credit.

You will have to pay, but by freezing it, you are the only one that can access it (unfreeze it for a credit check for a car purchase, etc. freeze it back up when done).

She will get a nasty surprise when she tries to use your credit again.

1a/ Yep, that’s exactly what I did. Multiple times over the years, every time I saw something that looked off. For now, she seems to have given up. As far as I’ve seen anyway. But being in a whole different state now, I have very little power to watch what she’s doing locally. I can’t be sure what she’s put my name on there, but it’s in the middle of nowhere and unlikely to affect me here. The tax office in her area sends me a letter every single year, insisting that I owe them taxes. Every year I have to call and fight it out with them. I suspect someone (most likely her) is using my name for something there and that’s why their files say that I still live there. Or maybe the tax office there is utterly incompetent and can’t comprehend that sometimes people move away and they need to update their files. Also extremely possible. Not sure, but for now that’s the only issue that seems to be coming up. So for now, I rest, and worry about my own debts and none of hers.

1b/ Good to hear. Sorry that you have to keep dealing with the tax thing.

If it were me, I would hire an attorney to deal with them.

1c/ Is it not possible to change your name legally and not let her know. Is it possible to get a new social security number after proving identity theft occurred against you?

1d/ You should definitely ask the SSA about getting a new SSN. Her continued theft of your identity should be a valid reason for them to do so.

Plus warn them to never give that number to someone claiming to be you from your mom’s state.

2/ You need to file a complaint against her with the police. She has done numerous things that would put her in jail of at least a lot of trouble. She could still be using your credit and damaging your credit. She has done these maliciously and caused you grief. Consult an attorney she may have committed federal crimes.

2a/ I agree. I think identity theft is a felony.

3/ You should write a book! Your mother is obviously mentally ill, and should have been arrested for her actions - they are crimes. But making a clean break was the only permanent solution. Maybe consider changing your last name so she can’t track you down? I am so glad you survived.

3a/ Ha, that’s what my friends tell me, that I should write a book! Let some good come out of the insanity that’s been my life. Yeah, mentally ill is accurate. I’m not qualified to diagnose, but I’m well-studied. I’ve always figured she’s a BPD/NPD combo. The shoe fits. Actually I’ve spent my life terrified that I might become like her and not realize it. So far so good, I think. Legal action, of course, was my first thought when I saw she’d stolen my identity for the first time. But it brought me nothing but stress. She’d manipulate her way out of trouble, her flying monkeys (the family) would put me through hell over it, and nothing would change in the end.

After years of watching her get bolder and bolder about what she would do to me for money, I decided to stop playing her game and just disappear. Changing my name legally was part of the plan, but when I started looking into residency/dual citizenship in Mexico, I was warned that a name change could cause a problem. Definitely don’t want to lose that option, so I waited for the time being. The name you see here isn’t my real name. Actually it’s a play on words. I’ve used the Mel nickname for years, in one form or another, and so far it’s worked. I never liked the name she gave me anyway. Hearing it has become a trigger for me.

Major banks' top officers were called to the White House. Everyone in the White House and bankers kept the info from Americans to avoid a run on the banks, and for national security. 1/ This is particularly notable as murder cases go, because it isn't like she found out and attacked him in the heat of the moment, or even applied one massive dose. She found out, took the time to do research into what she thought was an undetectable method, acquired the thallium and progressively applied it over the course of weeks. That has premeditation written all over it.

1a/ Definitely a connection between the "found with another woman" and "done to his organs."

2/ As soon as I heard you say Thallium, I knew he was a dead man, and that the wife is going away for 1st degree premeditated murder. Over the past decade thallium poisonings have seen an uptick precisely because criminals think it can't be traced. This has only lead to medical teams becoming more aware of it and catching it more often. The only reason I even know about it is because I'm a true crime junkie. Horrible way to go.

3/ DP is a 58 year old man, having a rough day.  He gets a notification on YouTube that Chubbyemu, one of his favorite content creators, has dropped a new video.  He's taken to his living room, where we are now, to enjoy his afternoon.

Federal prosecutors say this court record photo shows Nhi Ngoc Mai Le, of Lake in the Hills, the 41st Illinoisan to be arrested in the investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

CHICAGO — A Vietnamese immigrant from Chicago’s western suburbs was sentenced to 10 days in jail Monday for her actions at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, which she said were spurred by online misinformation that stoked her deep fears of Communism.

Nhi Ngoc Mai Le, 27, of Montgomery, pleaded guilty last year in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to disorderly conduct and illegally demonstrating at the Capitol, both misdemeanors. In addition to the jail sentence, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered Le to pay $1,500 in fines and restitution.

Le, whose family fought against the Communists in Vietnam before being granted asylum in the U.S., admitted in a plea agreement with prosecutors that in the days before before the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, she posted on Facebook that America was “a free country is under attack by underground forces.

“As much as you love the country, you hate the communists,” she wrote.

Video footage from the U.S. Capitol showed Le sitting on a railing outside the building and encouraging rioters to enter the Capitol, according to her plea agreement. After rioters broke through a door, she entered with the crowd and walked around as alarms sounded and police were trying to block people from going farther into the building.

“While inside the building, Le entered the Senate office just left of the entrance of the building, walked around the office, and recorded a video,” her plea agreement stated. After about five minutes, Le exited the Senate office and went out the same door she’d entered.

When interviewed by the FBI in April 2021, Le originally denied entering the Capitol. She acknowledged her actions during a second interview about a year later, according to prosecutors.

The criminal complaint filed against Le in 2023 also detailed Facebook messages and videos sent between Le and others in which Le allegedly said she had climbed a wall to access the Capitol, went inside the building and had been pepper-sprayed.

The complaint also detailed Le’s Facebook posts calling on viewers to remember Jan. 6 as a historic day.

“Proud to be a Trump Supporter, remember today’s historic event January 6th,” Le wrote. “It was a pleasure to meet so many very enthusiastic brothers from all over the United States.”

In a letter to the court prior to sentencing, Le wrote that due to language barriers she was “unable to grasp” news in her adopted land. Instead, she “relied on YouTube summaries” posted by podcast host Tran Maico that “raised concerns about the U.S. turning communist, reviving memories of childhood fears,” Le wrote.

“This led me to participate in the events at Washington DC on January 6th,” she wrote. “It stands as the most significant mistake of my life, feeling like a betrayal to the country I deeply love — a country that extended help to my entire family.”

Le said she’s now “ceased consuming ambiguous news” and understands that the 2021 election was not stolen.

“The country remained peaceful and I am still a protected U.S. citizen,” Le wrote. “Looking back, the fear that the U.S. would turn communist under Biden’s presidency in 2021 seems ludicrous and embarrassing.”

Le was among some 46 Illinoisans charged so far in the attack on the U.S. Capitol, as part of what federal prosecutors have called one of the most expansive criminal investigations in the nation’s history.

Cách nay hơn một thế kỷ, người Huế, kể cả lớp lao động, nông dân, buôn bán cho đến các cậu mợ, các thầy các cô, các ông già bà lão, kể cả giới quý tộc, đều ghiền một lại thuốc lá gọi là thuốc Cẩm Lệ.

Thuốc Cẩm Lệ là thuốc rời, muốn hút phải vốc một loại ít quấn vào tờ giấy quyến, vấn như hình sâu kèn, người lao động, nông dân vấn điếu to bằng ngón tay, người trí thức sang cả chỉ vấn thanh cảnh, nhỏ như sâu kèn thôi. Hút chỉ 3 phần tư điếu thuốc, phần còn lại gọi là tàn thuốc thường dán lên cột nhà, dán dưới phản gỗ v.v..., người nghèo khó không có tiền mua thuốc phải đi lột những tàn thuốc ấy, gom 3, 4 tàn lại thì quấn được một điếu hút cho đỡ ghiền.

Có điều lạ, thuốc Cẩm Lệ vốn nổi tiếng không những ở Huế mà tiếng tăm còn lan xa đến Quảng Trị, Quảng Bình vào tận Quảng Nam, Quảng Ngãi. Mỗi khi có dịp đi Huế hoặc có ai đi Huế đều gởi gắm mua vài lượng thuốc Cẩm Lệ coi là món quà quý giá. Nhưng thuốc Cẩm Lệ ấy lại không phải do đất Huế trồng nên mà gốc gác thuốc ngon là do trồng ở đất Quảng Nam, làng Cẩm Lệ là thuốc thượng hạng. Nhưng nghịch lý là đất Quảng Nam trồng được thuốc ngon, mà không bài chế thành thuốc ngon đặc biệt như ở Huế, cho nên họ thường trồng cây thuốc, hái lá thuốc, hong phơi khô, đóng thành kiện rồi “xuất khẩu” ra Huế, người mua về, có kỹ thuật chế biến riêng thành thứ thuốc có hương vị, phẩm chất độc đáo, không nơi nào có được, và trở thành món hàng quý Thuốc Cẩm Lệ Huế.

Thật ra không phải ở Huế ai cũng bào chế được đâu. Người đầu tiên tìm ra cách bào chế độc đáo, ngon nổi tiếng, đến tận bây giờ, những ông bà già ngoài 80 vẫn còn nhắc đến tên tuổi, đó là bà Cửu Mai ở đầu đường bờ Hột Mát, bây giờ là đường Bạch Đằng. Ngôi nhà số 10 đường Bạch Đằng là gốc gác gia truyền nghề thuốc Cẩm Lệ, trải qua nhiều đời và giàu có nổi tiếng nhờ vào công thức chế biến thuốc Cẩm Lệ ấy, đến đời thứ 4 thì bỏ nghề, vì con cháu lo học hành, lấy vợ lấy chồng ở xa, làm các ngành nghề khác nên không còn tiếp tục làm thuốc Cẩm Lệ nữa.


Thuở ấy, cuối thế kỷ 19, đầu thế kỷ 20 chỉ mới có một nhà làm thuốc Cẩm Lệ là bà Cửu Mai, người làng Vân Thê mà thôi, vài chục năm sau, một số người bắt chước làm theo và cũng nổi tiếng đó là bà Cửu Ới ở Gia Hội, đời con là chị Hàm ở Trần Hưng Đạo, gia đình này là họ hàng, cùng làng Vân Thê với bà Cửu Mai, nên làm theo công thức của bà Cửu Mai, còn có bà Bửu Hoàng ở cửa Đông Ba là cháu bà Cửu Mai, rồi tới mụ Thôi ở gần đường Ngự Viên, cô Phòng ở chợ Đông Ba, mụ Cháu ở An Cựu v.v... đều là thế hệ đi sau bà Cửu Mai cả.

Đến nay nghề thuốc Cẩm Lệ ở Huế đã thất truyền, mọi người đều hút thuốc điếu gọi là thuốc tây, không phiền phức phải vấn sâu kèn, thuốc tây mua đâu cũng có, dễ dàng, tiện lợi hơn. Tuy nhiên nhiều người vẫn còn nhớ hương vị độc đáo của thuốc Cẩm Lệ. Để nhớ đến người khai sơn phá thạch nghề thuốc Cẩm Lệ đã hơn trăm năm nay, nhớ ơn bà cố nội Cửu Mai của dòng họ tôi, nhớ bà mà con cháu giàu có, nhiều ruộng, lắm nhà, được dân Huế còn mãi nhớ tên bà và không quên sản nghiệp của bà vang danh một thuở. Có lẽ cả dòng họ chỉ còn tôi là người duy nhất còn nhớ được cái công thức chế biến thuốc Cẩm Lệ. Tôi viết lại bài này, trước hết là để thắp một nén nhang trầm và một lời tri ân đến Bà Cố của dòng họ tôi, thứ hai là ghi lại một nghề đã thất truyền, chẳng còn ai biết nữa. Tôi không có ý đồ làm sống lại một nghề đã thất truyền, nhất là nghề làm thuốc Cẩm Lệ, rất có hại cho sức khỏe, nó cũng gần như một loại thuốc nghiện, nặng hơn thuốc lá điếu, nặng hơn cả thuốc Lào bây giờ.

Ở Huế không trồng được cây thuốc ngon như đất Cẩm Lệ ở Quảng Nam, nhưng ở Quảng Nam không bào chế được thành một loại thuốc ngon độc đáo bằng ở Huế. Do vậy, đến mùa hái lá thuốc, hong phơi xong, đóng thành từng kiện lớn khoảng 100 kilô, rồi chở cả xe tải ra Huế bán. Ở Huế coi thuốc, thử thuốc loại ngon số 1 hay số 2, ngả giá xong, mua cả xe tải, chất vào kho thuốc để chế biến dần quanh năm. Có những tốp thợ làm thuốc, cuốn thuốc đến nhà, lấy thuốc từ kho ra, xổ thuốc phân loại, loại lá to để riêng làm lá áo, loại lá nhỏ, lá nhánh để riêng làm ruột. Lá áo được làm cẩn thận, tước rất khéo tay để nguyên lá không bị rách, còn cọng ở giữa lấy nguyên vẹn ra riêng, bó thành từng bó khoảng và ký lô (cọng nghĩa là cái sóng lá). Lá nhánh, lá nhỏ, được tước ra để riêng từng đống, cọng cũng để riêng. Người ta thường nấu loại cọng thuốc trong nồi rất lớn hoặc một cái thùng phuy, nấu cho đến khi nước còn ít, đặc lại, lúc bấy giờ để loại nước cốt này cho nguội, lá thuốc đã tước đánh thành đống trên nền nhà xi-măng đã lau sạch, dùng nước cốt rảy vào, xóc xới cho tơi khi nước cốt thấm vào thuốc dịu tay là được, đó là ruột thuốc. Có lá lớn để riêng làm áo cũng rảy nước cốt cho dịu, để riêng làm áo. Cứ vài ba lá trải ra, cuốn dần ruột thuốc theo hình tròn, dài mãi ra, cuốn khoanh tròn như bánh pháo, mỗi khoanh thuốc khoảng vài ký lô, mỗi đợt cuốn thuốc có khoảng vài chục khoanh chất chồng cao lên, để khỏi khô, người ta lấy lá chuối tươi quấn chung quanh. Như thế là tốp thợ làm thuốc đã xong. Đến giai đoạn xắt thuốc, có thợ xắt riêng, có bàn xắt, dao xắt là một dao yếm to để xắt lát thuốc mỏng và đều, xắt đến đâu, cuốn thuốc mở ra dần cho đến hết, thuốc xắt vào quả thuốc xây tròn cho thuốc đều khắp quả, về sau có máy xắt thuốc nhanh hơn. Quả cũng lót lá chuối tươi, quả đầy cũng được đậy lá chuối tươi như thế thuốc còn mềm mại không bị khô, thuốc khô hút khét mất hương vị ngon. Người bán thường cân thuốc bằng cái cân như cân thuốc Bắc, gói thuốc bằng lá chuối tươi bên ngoài, bên trong lót lá chuối khô, gói thuốc kèm theo vài dung giấy quyến để người hút tự xé một mảnh giấy quyến hình chữ nhật, vốc một ít thuốc cho vào và cuốn theo hình sâu kèn. Loại thuốc ấy hút rất nghiện. Giai đoạn về sau có nhiều nhà chế biến còn muốn cho người hút nghiện hơn nữa, họ còn dã tâm cho cả xái thuốc phiện và nồi nấu cọng để rảy lên lá thuốc.

Khoảng từ 30 năm nay nghề thuốc Cẩm Lệ đã không còn nữa, những hàng bán thuốc ở Huế không thấy ai nhắc tới nữa. Một nghề đã thất truyền hoàn toàn, còn chăng là ký ức của những người già còn nhớ lại thôi.

Thuốc Lá Cẩm Lệ

Góp mặt vào các loại thuốc lá thơm ngon trên toàn quốc, thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ (sản xuất tại Cẩm Lệ - Hòa Vang) là một đặc sản xưa nay được nhiều nơi ham chuộng. Sự nhận xét này rất xác đáng có lẽ là do các yếu tố về chủng loại, thổ nhưỡng, kỹ thuật trồng thuốc cổ truyền, mà ngay các nơi trồng thuốc lá khác trong tỉnh Quảng Nam muốn thử trồng cũng không sao sản xuất được loại thuốc lá có phẩm chất tương tự.

Bước đầu khảo sát vùng Cẩm Lệ, tìm hiểu và giới thiệu về cây thuốc lá và nghề trồng thuốc nơi đây, chúng tôi hy vọng ghi lại một phần kinh nghiệm trồng thuốc cổ truyền của người dân Cẩm Lệ còn được bảo tồn để góp phần tạo nên loại thuốc lá xưa nay nổi tiếng gần xa.Theo “Phủ Biên Tạp Lục” (toàn tập tập I) của Lê Quý Đôn thì Cẩm Lệ là một xã trong mười xã thuộc tổng Lỗ Giản huyện Hòa Vang, phủ Điện Bàn, được hình thành ổn định vào thế kỷ XVIII. Đơn vị xã Cẩm Lệ còn tồn tại cho đến nửa đầu thế kỷ XX. Ngày nay về mặt hành chánh “xã Cẩm Lệ” không còn ranh giới như trước kia, nhưng danh xưng “vùng Cẩm Lệ” vẫn được người dân nói tới để chỉ đến những vùng đất gồm thôn Bình Thái và những vùng đất kế cận như các thôn Phong Bắc, thuộc xã Hòa Thọ - Hòa Vang.Thuốc lá thuộc loại cây ngắn ngày được người dân Cẩm Lệ trồng sớm. Từ ngày ươm hạt cho đến ngày thu hoạch khoảng 150 ngày.

Thời vụ thích hợp nhất (vụ mùa) được giới hạn từ tháng 8 đến tháng 12 Âm Lịch, có khi trồng muộn hơn một hai tháng. Thời gian này gặp những điều kiện thuận lợi cho khí hậu tương đối ôn hòa của xứ Quảng Nam (nhiệt độ trung bình từ 20-24 độ C và ít có những trận mưa lớn ảnh hưởng đến cây trồng), hơn nữa còn dùng được nhân công sau một mùa lúa để đầu tư vào việc trồng thuốc. Khác với các loại cây thuốc lá ở các vùng khác trong tỉnh Quảng Nam, thường có dáng cây to cao (hơn l.5m), tàu lá dài rộng và dòn (kích thước mỗi lá thường là 0.6m x 0.3m), cây thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ có tầm cao vừa phải (khoảng 1m), mảnh mai, tàu lá thon nhỏ, khá dày, bóng, đều đặn và mềm dẻo, cuống lá ngắn tròn, gọn, không có tai lá hai bên (kích thước mỗi lá chừng 0.2m x 0.8m).

Từ lâu, không ít những gia đình nông dân vùng Cẩm Lệ đã chuyên việc trồng thuốc và bỏ thuốc (bán thuốc) cho những lái buôn theo tuyến đường từ Quảng Trị vào. Các gia đình có truyền thống trong nghề trồng thuốc ở Cẩm Lệ đều cho rằng giống thuốc lá của họ còn đến ngày nay có lẽ là do sự bảo tồn nguyên vẹn (không lai tạo) một giống thuốc đặc sắc vốn được cha ông họ đưa từ các tỉnh miền Bắc mang vào trong quá khứ để khai hoang lập nghiệp. Dần dà, việc chọn giống thuốc qua các mùa và việc bảo quản hạt giống cẩn thận của người dân Cẩm Lệ đã là một trong những yếu tố bền vững giúp cho việc tạo nên nét đặc trưng của loại thuốc nơi đất Cẩm Lệ này.So với những vùng đất khác ở huyện Hòa Vang cũng như các nơi khác trong tỉnh Quảng Nam, thổ nhưỡng vùng Cẩm Lệ có lẽ được thiên nhiên ưu đãi về thành phần chất khoáng và những loại vi khuẩn thích hợp nhất cho quá trình sinh trưởng và phát triển đồng đều của cây thuốc lá. Địa thế nơi đây tương đối cao, diện tích đất cát pha khá nhiều và có phần hơi xa nguồn nước nên người dân sớm biết tận dụng để trồng thuốc lá. Buổi đầu việc trồng thuốc còn chưa phổ biến, những gia đình mới bắt đầu “vào nghề” thường chỉ trồng ngay trong vườn (quanh nhà với vài trăm gốc, càng về sau, biết được lợi thế của loại đất quê nhà đối với cây thuốc lá, họ tính chuyện mở rộng diện tích trồng xa nhà với số lượng nhiều hơn trước gọi là phụ kế sinh nhai.

Theo kinh nghiệm lâu đời, những người trồng thuốc ở Cẩm Lệ rất coi trọng việc chọn đất và sửa soạn cho đất trước khi bắt tay vào việc trồng, họ cho rằng loại đất cát pha là tốt nhất vì độ thoáng khí và giữ màu của đất tốt, song người trồng thuốc phải biết trồng cách năm (tức là một năm chỉ trồng một vụ, và sau một vụ phải để cho đất nghỉ từ 1 đến 2 năm, nếu trồng tiếp vụ thì cây thuốc thường bị chật lại). Trước đây, trong vùng Cẩm Lệ, người ta hay nhắc đến một vài địa điểm trồng nhiều thuốc nhất và có tiếng tăm như Gò Mô, Cây Cốc. Ở nơi này, trung bình mỗi nhà trồng từ 3,000-5,000 cây, những gia đình chuyên nghề trồng thuốc lá thì số lượng có thể lên đến 10,000 cây hoặc hơn thế nữa. Ngày nay, vùng trồng thuốc lá đã được lan rộng ra các nơi Cẩm Hòa, Gò Theo, quanh Cẩm Lệ và mỗi nhà thường trồng từ 500-2,000 cây. Có thể nói vấn đề thổ nhưỡng riêng biệt của vùng Cẩm Lệ được coi là một yếu tố quan trọng bổ sung vào chất lượng độc đáo của thuốc lá nơi đây. Như vậy, ngoài hai yếu tố tự nhiên về giống và thổ nhưỡng mà người dân Cẩm Lệ nói đến đầu tiên, theo chúng tôi, nhất thiết phải kể đến một số nét trong kỹ thuật trồng thuốc có tính cổ truyền, những kinh nghiệm nghề nghiệp khá phong phú của họ vốn được tích lũy qua rất nhiều năm.

Để tiến hành trồng thuốc, người dân Cẩm Lệ đã chuẩn bị tỉ mỉ từ khi dọn đất, ủ phân, công việc này được bắt đầu từ tháng 7 Âm Lịch. Đất vườn hoặc đất bãi được cày cuốc tơi xốp và cào bằng phẳng. Vấn đề phân bón cũng được chú ý ngay từ đầu cũng như trong suốt thời kỳ trồng. Để cây thuốc không bị quắn rễ hoặc cháy lá sau mỗi thời kỳ bón phân, trước đây người ta thường dùng phân bò khô hoặc phân heo ráo nước tiểu được ủ với nhiều loại lá cây rừng trong vòng 2 đến 3 tháng cho rã mục. Thêm vào đó, người ta còn dùng bánh dầu tán mịn như bột cám để kết hợp với phân chuồng bón cho cây thuốc theo liều lượng và cách thức nhất định trong ba thời kỳ đầu của cây thuốc (gọi là: Nước nhất - nước nhử và nước phụ), ở thời kỳ sau cùng (nước vun hàng) thì có thể dùng bánh dầu tán bột lớn để bón. Đáng chú ý là so với phân chuồng, lượng bánh dầu được bón tăng dần lên từ đầu kỳ đến cuối kỳ phát triển của cây thuốc.

Việc bổ trợ lượng bánh dầu trong thành phần phân bón có tác dụng làm cho cây thuốc lớn nhanh và đều, lá thuốc bóng dẻo và có lượng bột đáng kể. Muốn cho việc trồng thuốc được đúng mùa, ngay từ đầu tháng 8 Âm Lịch, người ta bắt đầu ươm hạt giống, khâu trồng này đòi hỏi sự cẩn thận mới có thể gây tạo con giống tốt cho cây trồng sau này. Lần lượt, họ dựng chòi nhỏ (diện tích 6-8m), có mái che, xung quanh đan nan tre mắt cáo cho chặt vừa phải, tưới nước ẩm. Sau đó người ta lấy hạt giống vốn được giữ gìn kỹ lưỡng (trong các lọ có tẩm tro bếp) đem cho vào rổ có mắt đan nhỏ rồi rây đều lên mặt đất, sau đó lấy lá chuối hoặc lá dừa phủ lên trên khoảng 20-25 ngày sau, cây thuốc đã lên cao chừng 2-3cm và ra 3-4 lá nhỏ, người ta tiếp tục lấy lá dừa hoặc lá chuối làm thành cái hoẵng nhỏ (hình trụ cỡ bằng cổ chai) bên trong có bỏ phân bò khô mịn lẫn đất bột tỷ lệ 50% mỗi thứ, rồi bứng nhẹ cây thuốc đặt vào hoẵng cho vừa chặt để cho cây thuốc mọc thẳng. Sau đó người ta xếp các hoẵng cây vào trong những cái trành (tức là những khay bằng gỗ hay bằng nan tre đan hình chữ nhật có khuôn khổ 0.6 X 0.4 X 0.1m) để tiện di chuyển tránh nắng gắt hay mưa lớn trong vòng từ 10 đến 15 ngày.Khi cây ươm đã có vẻ cứng cáp, trổ được 5 lá nách thỏ thì người ta có thể đem ra trồng xuống ruộng đất đã chuẩn bị kỳ trước (bước này còn gọi là nước nhất). Họ tháo hoẵng bọc cây và đặt con giống xuyên phân xuống đất để rễ cây khỏi quắn vì độ nồng của lượt phân lót đầu (phân và bánh dầu tán mịn được trộn lẫn với nhau theo lượng: 1 gánh phân khô khoảng 7.5kg thì được bón cho 1,000 cây thuốc). Mỗi cây được trồng trên một mô đất nhỏ để tránh đọng nước khoảng cách mỗi cây từ 0.4m đến 0.5m.

Sau 20 ngày, cây thuốc lên cao 0.3m, người ta thường tính ngày và đếm lá trên cây để tiến hành chăm bón cây thuốc theo 3 thời kỳ chính, mỗi thời kỳ đòi hỏi sự chăm sóc công phu của người trồng thuốc trong cách thức bón phân, tưới nước, bắt sâu v.v... và các phương pháp kỹ thuật khéo léo để thúc đẩy cây thuốc lớn đều và lá thuốc mượt mà lành lặn, chẳng hạn:Ở thời kỳ nhử (bón nước nhử): Để tạo cho cây phát triển hoàn chỉnh về bộ rễ, theo kinh nghiệm thì người ta không trộn lẫn hai thứ phân chuồng và bánh dầu với nhau nữa, mà phải bớt đất quanh gốc trước, bánh dầu mịn khoanh sau, vun đất lại theo hình mu rùa và tưới nước cách ngày cho cây. Ở thời kỳ này cứ 1,000 cây thuốc thì sử dụng tối đa chừng 4 gánh phân (khoảng 200kg) và 10 tấm bánh dầu (25kg). Khoảng 20-25 ngày sau người ta tiếp tục bón nước phụ cho cây.Ở thời kỳ phụ (còn gọi là rà nước 2): Lúc này cây thuốc đã khôn, rễ lớn nhanh và bắt đầu đâm đọt, nhánh. Đây là thời kỳ cây thuốc ăn phân nhiều nhất, vì vậy người ta dồn công chăm cây thường và chu đáo. Lượng phân cần thiết cho 1.000 cây vào khoảng 30 gánh phân chuồng (1,500kg) và 24 tấm bánh dầu (60kg). Cây thuốc đâm đọt nên người ta chú ý bắt sâu giữ đọt cẩn thận để cây phát triển chiều cao. Mười lăm ngày sau khi bón phân, đếm 6-7 lá dài kể từ gốc thì họ bắt đầu múm ngọn (tức cắt ngọn) để cây đâm chồi, thông thường họ để cây đâm 3 chồi, trừ những cây mạnh có thể để 4-5 chồi, tưới nước thường xuyên ngày một lần; sau 10 ngày, chồi 3 hoặc chồi 5 đã lên dài và trổ lá non xanh mượt.

Bước vào tới kỳ bón vun hàng (chăm nước 3): Lượng bánh dầu được dùng nhiều nhất so với thời kỳ (khoảng 40 tấm bánh dầu 100kg trong khi lượng phân khoảng 6 bánh 300kg để bón cho 1.000 cây thuốc). Bánh dầu không cần giã mịn vì thời kỳ chăm cuối cùng cho cây nên để cây hấp thụ dần chất bổ. Một thời gian sau, khi lá chồi đã lớn, và trên chồi xuất hiện những búp nhỏ ở các nách lá người ta bắt đầu cơi thuốc (tức ngắt búp) và ngắt cho hết nhánh nhỏ ở nách lá chồi để lá chồi ra nhanh và to đều. Cứ cách từ 5 đến 7 ngày thì cơi thuốc một lần, sau 3 lần cơi thuốc thì bước vào thời kỳ chuẩn bị thu hoạch lá thuốc. Để bảo đảm thu được những lá thuốc nguyên lành đẹp mắt, trong quá trình cơi thuốc, người ta còn chú ý bắt sâu rầy bằng cách lăn cục hồ dẻo bằng bột sắn lên mặt lá một cách nhẹ nhàng.Như vậy trong vòng khoảng 8 tháng kể từ khi đặt con giống xuống ruộng, người ta có thể tiến hành thu lá rồi. Thông thường trước đây người ta thu hoạch một lượt nhưng theo từng bước để dễ dàng phân loại lá thuốc. Trước hết là lấy lá trên chồi khi lá còn xanh tươi, dùng tay cầm gần cuống và giật ngược từ dưới lên để nhánh chồi khỏi bị xược vỏ, lá trên chồi này được xếp vào loại lá thuốc nhất (loại ngon nhất) và được để riêng ra, thường thường mỗi cây cho khoảng 25 - 30 lá chồi.

Tiếp đến người ta ngắt lá ôm chồi (được xếp loại lá thứ 3), lá dưới cùng chồi (còn gọi là lá sai - được xếp vào loại lá thứ 2). Về sau để cho cây tận dụng cho hết các chất dinh dưỡng trong đất, người ta đã tiến hành thu hoạch lá thuốc theo 2 lần: lần thứ nhất căn bản giống như trên, còn lần thứ 2 cách lần đầu khoảng 1 tháng lúc ấy gọi là tu thuốc nhánh, tuy được khá nhiều lá nhưng phần lớn tàu lá nhỏ hơn và kém phẩm chất hơn.Bước vào những ngày chuẩn bị sắm sửa cho ngày Tết cổ truyền hàng năm, cũng là những ngày người dân Cẩm Lệ bận rộn với công việc làm thuốc. Theo lệ thường, nhà nào trồng thuốc nhiều có thể mướn người trong làng tới cùng với con cháu họ lo việc tuốt nan, xâu lá, phơi lá, hứng sương, đẩy thuốc v.v... Mọi công việc đều làm bằng tay rất tẩn mẩn và nhẹ nhàng. Cật tre được chẻ chuốt sao cho tròn nhỏ và dài chừng một sải tay để xâu 100 đến 150 lá làm thành một chả thuốc. Các chả thuốc được treo chỗ thoáng gió trong nhà cho se lá rồi mới đem phơi 4 -5 lượt nắng to để lá thuốc khô đều và ngã sang màu vàng đỏ hung hung.Những người trồng thuốc lâu năm đều cho rằng phải trở lá thuốc sao cho đủ nắng và thoáng gió để mặt lưng lá có màu gụ như màu đất ướt, còn mặt trong của lá có màu vàng như màu gạch nung già thì mới gọi là được lá thuốc ngon.



Sau đợt phơi nắng, người ta tiếp tục công việc lấy sương một đêm cho lá thuốc mềm dịu giữ màu, dễ dàng cho khâu sau cùng là đẩy thuốc (tức vuốt lá thuốc cho phẳng), mỗi chả thuốc được gấp đôi hoặc dồn lại bằng đòn tay dùng nan tre gài chặt cọng lá (tức chúm đọt lại) rồi lấy tay nhẹ nhàng vuốt lá, dùng bàn mê (tức một miếng gỗ vuông nhỏ) để chặn từng lá thuốc đã đẩy rồi. Mỗi chả thuốc được đẩy xong, người ghim đầu lá dính vào nhau làm cho chả thuốc có hình tam giác gọn nhẹ, thuận tiện cho việc cất giữ và buôn bán. Đến đây coi như kết thúc một quy trình trồng thuốc của người dân Cẩm Lệ.Lá thuốc Cẩm Lệ được dân chúng sử dụng ngay tại địa phương hoặc trao đổi với các nơi khác dưới dạng đếm lá đếm chả. Những chả thuốc trước đây được người ta làm lễ lạc cho các nhà quyền quý và trên thực tế còn được coi như một món hàng buôn bán có giá trị. Các tay buôn thuốc lá từ Quảng Trị hoặc từ kinh đô Huế thường tìm đến tận vùng Cẩm Lệ để hỏi mua lá thuốc.

Trong một thời gian rất dài, lá thuốc Cẩm Lệ được đa số người già các địa phương lân cận biết đến và sử dụng hàng ngày. Lúc làm việc cũng như lúc nghỉ ngơi. Cho tới nay tập quán hút thuốc dần dà ở vùng Cẩm Lệ vẫn đọng lại trong một số đông những người đứng tuổi, thông thường người ta dắt sẵn lá thuốc trong người mỗi khi ra khỏi nhà, khi hút thì lấy ra tước bỏ cọng lá, dùng ngay lá thuốc bọc lá thuốc để hút, cũng có khi họ dùng lá chuối khô làm loa kèn để bọc thuốc bên trong mà hút. Các cụ già kể rằng, đối với những người giàu có hoặc các quan chức nơi kinh đô, trước kia, thì việc hút thuốc Cẩm Lệ được xem như một thú tiêu khiển nhàn tản thú vị, với hạng người này thì phong cách hút thuốc có phần cầu kỳ hơn (vì thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ có hương thơm thanh khiết, có vị nồng cay và khói xanh, tàn trắng, lại đắt tiền), thuốc phải xắt nhỏ, tẩm dầu thơm rồi mới vê thành kén nhỏ, mồi lửa nơi bát than bên cạnh rồi nhẩn nha ngồi rít từng hơi. Mấy chục năm trở lại đây, ở những nơi xa vốn ưa chuộng thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ, họ có thể mua nguyên lá thuốc về và sau đó chế biến theo cách riêng của họ, vì lượng ít mà quý nên có khi họ pha thêm lá thuốc tạp và cho thêm những loại tinh dầu thơm khác nhau để cố lấy hương vị và danh xưng thuốc Cẩm Lệ.

Càng ngày nhu cầu tiêu dùng theo thị hiếu của dân chúng ngoài địa phận Cẩm Lệ có phần đa dạng hơn, thêm vào đó là cả một thời gian khá dài trước năm 1975, sự xuất hiện tràn ngập các loại thuốc lá ngoại đã tác động phần nào đến những gia đình chuyên nghề trồng thuốc và những người trung gian chuyên thầu lá thuốc, cho nên việc chế biến thuốc lá ngay tại địa phương cũng dần dần hình thành. Ở phần chế biến này, giữa các gia đình có sự khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, trước hết họ đều phải tước cọng lá nấu lấy nước tưới vào phần lá còn lại để tăng thêm hương vị nồng cay cho thuốc, tiếp đó tùy theo sở thích của khách hàng quen thuộc và tiện cho việc buôn bán, thì mỗi nhà có thể sử dụng những chất thơm khác nhau như tinh dầu hồi - quế, hoặc rượu cất để ủ lá thuốc vài ngày rồi mới đem ra cuốn chặt lá thuốc và xắt thành từng lát tròn mỏng.

Trên đất nước ta hiện nay đang trồng rất nhiều loại thuốc và mỗi loại thuốc ở mỗi nơi đều có hương vị độc đáo khác nhau, đều đòi hỏi cách thức trồng trọt theo lối dân gian khác nhau. Giữ được và phát huy những nét đặc trưng của nghề thuốc mỗi nơi không những củng cố chất lượng nguyên sinh của loại thuốc nơi đó nhằm nâng cao năng xuất kinh tế của nó mà còn giữ gìn một trong hàng trăm nét sinh hoạt địa phương có tính chất cổ truyền đầy hấp dẫn của từng vùng như vùng Cẩm Lệ - Hòa Vang cho tới nay vẫn tự hào về loại thuốc thơm ngon của mình. Việc trồng thuốc theo phương cách gia truyền hiện vẫn còn áp dụng khá phổ biến ở các nông gia, phạm vi trồng trọt còn thu hẹp lại theo đơn vị gia đình, điều này tuy có tính cách đảm bảo cho cây thuốc được hưởng công chăm sóc thường xuyên và kỹ càng hơn, song lại có phần yếu kém về mặt thu hoạch kinh tế của từng địa phương. Chúng tôi thiết nghĩ Hòa Vang hiện nay đang phát triển ngành trồng thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ. Và hy vọng rằng thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ sẽ ngày càng đáp ứng được nhu cầu thưởng thức của số đông người ưa chuộng xa gần, đóng góp một phần quan trọng vào việc thu nhập của kinh tế địa phương.

Thuốc Lá Cẩm Lệ - Bà Cửu Ới

Thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ gốc ở Quảng Nam, du nhập ra Huế vào thời kỳ 1940 -1960, được hầu hết người dân – đặc biệt là phụ nữ ưa chuộng nên rất đắt khách và nổi tiếng. Dạo ấy, ngay trước mặt chợ Đông Ba – nơi phồn hoa đô hội của thành phố Huế có tiệm bán thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ, chủ nhân là bà Cửu Ới, vì thế người ta thường gọi một cách thân thiết và đơn giản là thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ Bà Cửu Ới.

Trong đặc san Quốc Học - Đồng Khánh xuất bản ở Nam California (Mỹ) năm 1998 có một bài thơ rất thú vị, tác giả có bút danh là Ông Cai trường:

Loại thuốc này có màu đen đen, mùi thơm thơm, rờ vào sẽ thấy rít rít, thường được cuộn chặt thành những khoanh tròn như con rắn vậy, dùng một con dao thật bén xắt ra thành từng lát thật mỏng, càng mỏng càng đẹp và có giá trị về mặt chất lượng, nghĩa là khi vấn để hút, từng sợi thuốc mỏng manh ấy quyện dính vào nhau sẽ góp phần tăng thêm hương thơm đậm đà đặc sắc của vị thuốc Cẩm Lệ.

Thuốc lá Cẩm Lệ bán - mua theo cân lạng, khi mua ta sẽ được bà Cửu Ới gói thuốc trong lá chuối tươi cốt để giữ cho thuốc có độ ẩm khỏi bị khô, bởi thuốc khô lúc hút sẽ có mùi khét rất dở, cộng thêm một xấp giấy quyến mỏng dùng để vấn thuốc, số lượng giấy quyến kèm theo này thường tương đương với cân lạng thuốc mình mua, chẳng hạn 1 lạng thuốc thì 10 xấp giấy quyến, hai lạng thuốc thì 20 xấp giấy quyến… Tất cả thuốc và giấy quyến gói trong lá chuối lá chuối, để thêm phần lịch sự và sạch sẽ bên ngoài lá chuối được bao bọc bằng giấy báo. Do vậy, cứ hễ nhìn thấy ai đó cầm một gói giấy hình vuông dẹp mong mỏng, nhẹ tênh, đó chính là gói thuốc Cẩm Lệ của bà Cửu Ới.



Thuốc được vấn thành điếu bởi giấy quyến, giấy quyến là loại giấy mỏng, mỏng hơn giấy pơluya, mềm dịu, màu trắng, khi mua giấy quyến đã được rọc sẵn, chiều dài tuỳ thuộc vào khổ giấy đã quy định của nhà sản xuất, thông thường có thể vấn được khoảng 5- 6 điếu một dung giấy, chiều ngang bằng lóng tay áp út, người hút tự tay vấn lấy thuốc mới có giá trị, một điếu thuốc hoàn chỉnh sẽ có một đầu to, đầu nhỏ, khi hút ta ngậm đầu nhỏ ở miệng, châm lửa ở đầu to.

Vấn thuốc cũng là một nghệ thuật tinh tế, một điếu thuốc đẹp là phải láng lẩy, gọn gàng, đầu to đầu nhỏ cân xứng hài hoà, như thế mới là sành điệu.
