Germany registers over 64,000 refugees from Ukraine
More than 64,000 refugees have arrived in Germany from Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, according to Germany's interior ministry.
On Tuesday, the ministry said it had registered 64,604 refugees from Ukraine, more than 14,310 refugees from the day before.
The actual number of incoming refugees, however, could be significantly higher, an interior spokesperson told CNN Tuesday.
More than two million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Nearly 5,000 Ukrainians have arrived in France, and more are on the way, French official says
From CNN’s Joseph Ataman and Camille Knight
French Minister Delegate for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa said an estimated 5,000 Ukrainians have so far arrived in France, with more arriving every day.
“We have close to 5,000 people from Ukraine who have arrived in France. It’s a current estimate; every day, we have new arrivals,” she said in an interview with French broadcaster Franceinfo Tuesday.
Schiappa said that every Ukrainian in need of accommodation would receive it in France, but she added that Ukrainians were not collectively being granted refugee status, as many hope to return to their country.
Instead, they are being offered a “temporary, immediate status” with the same guarantees of protection as refugee status, she said, adding that this will also offer recipients access to schooling and financial and medical support.
She also announced a “refugee sponsorship system” via a new platform. The site parrainage.refugies.info will allow French households to host a Ukrainian family with the support of nongovernmental organizations.

Germany’s interior ministry has registered a total of 80,035 people from Ukraine since Russia invaded the country, more than 15,000 refugees from the previous day.
The actual figures could be higher, the ministry added.
Around 2.1 million people have fled Ukraine since Feb. 24, according to United Nations data.

At least 1.33 million people have arrived in Poland from Ukraine since Russia launched its military invasion, Poland’s embassy to the European Union tweeted Wednesday, citing figures from the country’s border guard agency.
“Among them 93% are Ukrainian, 1% are Polish and 6% are from 100 other different countries,” the post read.
On Tuesday alone, some 125,800 people crossed into Poland according to the agency.

US, UK vow to defeat Russia in Ukraine, Blinken 'absolutely convinced that Putin will fail'
The UK said it would send ground-based air defense systems to Ukraine
The U.S. and the U.K. on Wednesday vowed to defeat Russian President Vladimir Putin as his forces continue to pummel Ukraine two weeks into the war.
"I'm absolutely convinced that Putin will fail, and Russia will suffer a strategic defeat no matter what short-term tactical gains they may make in Ukraine," Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters from a joint press conference with U.K. Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss.
"You can win a battle, but that doesn't mean you win the war," he continued. "You can take a city, but you can't take the hearts and minds of its people."
Russian forces continue to make advances on Ukrainian cities and security officials believe they will attempt to encircle the capital of Kyiv to overthrow the democratically elected government and replace it with a "puppet regime."
The U.S. and NATO have said their forces will not engage with Russia militarily in Ukraine and have instead targeted the Kremlin through severe sanctions and provided Kyiv with defensive aid.
Together the U.S. and the U.K. have provided more than $1.4 billion in security assistance, including through surface-to-air missile defense systems like Javellin, Stinger and MANPAD missiles – which are shoulder-fired anti-aircraft weapons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the U.S. and NATO to implement no-fly zones to bar Russian planes from hitting targets in the air.
Poland on Tuesday issued a surprise announcement that it would send all MiG-29 warplanes to the U.S. Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Ukraine has called for the speedy delivery of these planes.
But U.S. defense officials have warned that deploying warplanes from a U.S. base in a NATO-allied nation could further escalate Russia’s aggression – a concern that was echoed by the British foreign secretary.
"The best way to help protect the skies is through anti-air weaponry," Truss told reporters. "The reality is that setting up a no-fly zone would lead to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia."
The U.K. announced Wednesday that it would send air defense systems to Ukraine to help counter the slurry of missiles Russia has levied at Ukraine.
But both the U.S. and U.K. said their ultimate goal is to continue making Russia’s economic reality increasingly difficult and called on nations like India and those in the Gulf states to follow suit by dropping their Moscow-oil ties.
"Now is not the time to let up – Putin must fail," Truss said. "We know from history, that aggressors only understand one thing, and that is strength.
"We know that if we don't do enough now, other aggressors around the world will be emboldened and we know that if Putin is not stopped in Ukraine, there will be terrible implications for European and global security," she added.

Tesla will pay Ukrainian employees for up to 3 months if they are conscripted to fight
Ukrainian Tesla employees who are asked to return to defend their country will receive pay for at least three months, according to an email the company sent on Monday to employees in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. It wasn’t clear from the email whether this benefit would be extended to employees in North America and elsewhere.
After three months, Tesla plans to reassess the Russia-Ukraine war and their employees’ situations to decide what more will be needed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called up reservists to fight back in February, ahead of the anticipated invasion.
In the Monday email — sent on the 12th day after Russia invaded Ukraine — Tesla employees were also praised for helping SpaceX, the aerospace venture also led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, to bring its Starlink satellite internet service to Ukraine.
Among other things, Tesla’s Energy team assembled and provided lithium ion battery energy storage systems known as Tesla Powerwalls to run Starlink equipment in Ukraine.
Tesla employees used inverters and charging cables that were donated by Tesla’s certified installers in the area to assemble the Starlink-and-Powerwall systems. They also fashioned AC cables from scrap at Tesla’s new factory being built outside of Berlin to help power Starlink equipment.
Although Tesla does not operate in Ukraine, the company said in the email that about 5,000 Tesla owners in the country and other EV drivers could obtain free vehicle charging at some of its Supercharger stations in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
Tesla is not alone in navigating impacts to employees and its own business in the wake of the Russian war on Ukraine.
Automakers such as General Motors and Ford in the U.S. moved quickly to suspend their business in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Stellantis announced on March 2 that it had established a support team that would operate around the clock to support and monitor the health and safety of the company’s 71 Ukraine-based employees.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Here is the full text of the email, which was sent by Axel Tangen, Tesla’s director of Northern Europe, on behalf of the company’s HR director for the EMEA region, Mariam Khalifa, and senior director for Tesla EMEA, Joe Ward. The email was transcribed by CNBC with photos of Tesla employees and facilities removed for privacy.

Hi Team,
Sharing this message from Joe Ward and Mariam Khalifa:
As you know, Tesla is committed to do the right thing. Whilst the situation in Ukraine is evolving, we wanted to share with you what actions are being taken to support those impacted by the conflict.
Many folks have reached to understand how they can contribute, which is awesome. It’s important we show them how we as a company are helping, what resources we have in place, and how they can also proactively support themselves. Big thanks to all of the teams that have contributed to these efforts so far – true Tesla spirit on display.
*As a priority HR EMEA team members have been connecting with employees impacted as well as their managers to ensure we check in. We will continue to ensure we provide meaningful and targeted support for our employees.
For any Tesla employees who is a Ukrainian national and has been asked to return to Ukraine for active duty as a reservist, we will maintain their employment and salary for 3 months, with a view to assessing after this period as needed.
*Tesla has opened free Supercharging at stations bordering Ukraine to support those impacted by the recent invasion. Within hours of implementation, Tesla emailed local owners announcing that several Supercharger stations near Ukraine could be used by Tesla and non-Tesla electric vehicles, free of charge. Although Tesla does not officially operates within Ukraine, any of the country’s estimated 5,000 Tesla owners can access free Supercharging at select stations in Poland, Hungary Slovakia.
*Tesla teamed up with SpaceX to provide coverage expansion for its Starlink services to help provide an alternative internet infrastructure.
*Volunteers across the Giga Berlin and Germany Service team responded quickly on Sunday to test, configure, pack and ship several hundred Starlink units which have already been gratefully received by Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister. In true Tesla fashion, the solution has been put together in less than 3 days.
*On top of this the Energy team supplemented the Starlink roll out with a fleet Powerwalls. The system included PV inverters given by our Certified installer network, pre-made DC cables given by one of our Supercharger Installation Partners and AC cables made out out of scrap from Giga Berlin. All of it assembled by a team of (40+) volunteers from across the EMEA organization, committed to doing what they can to support.
*In addition, we have reinforced Tesla EMEA Employee Assistance Programme. The Programme offers counseling and numerous resources and support for employees.
Lastly, employees can of course support by making cash donations to reputable relief organizations responding in Ukraine, this is not an exhaustive list and you can of course make donation to an organisation of your choice.

Papa John's, Heineken suspend operations in Russia
Papa John's and Heineken are the latest brands to cease business in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
The American pizza chain and the Dutch beer company join internationally known brands such as McDonald's, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and Starbucks in suspending operations in Russia.
While Heineken has stopped the production and sale of beer in Russia, Papa John’s has suspended all corporate operations there as well.
"It has ceased all operational, marketing and business support to, and engagement with, the Russian market, where all restaurants are owned by independent franchisees, and a master franchisee who controls operations and provides all supplies and ingredients for the restaurants through a supply chain that it owns and operates," a statement released Wednesday by Papa John’s read.

7,000 Russian scientists ‘strongly protest’ Ukraine war in open letter to Putin
Signatories who call Russia ‘a rogue state’ risk a fine or jail time as Kremlin cracks down on any opposition
MOSCOW — Nearly 7,000 Russian scientists, mathematicians, and academics had as of Thursday signed an open letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin “strongly” protesting against his war in Ukraine.
The massive global backlash to Moscow’s invasion a week ago has already affected a range of scientific initiatives, including the International Space Station and a planned Russian-European mission to land a rover on Mars.
“We, Russian scientists and science journalists, strongly protest against the military invasion of Ukraine launched by Russian armed forces,” the open letter published Tuesday on the trv-science.ru news website said.
The more than 6,900 signatories could be risking a fine or jail time after Russian authorities adopted legislation in recent years allowing them to target citizens criticizing the government.
And the Russian parliament took up another bill this week that would toughen punishment for criticizing the war in Ukraine.
“Humanist values are the foundation on which science is built. The many years spent strengthening Russia’s reputation as a leading centre of mathematics have been completely scuppered,” the letter said.
The letter pointed out that the International Congress of Mathematicians, which Russia had been scheduled to host in July, has been canceled due to the invasion.
It also called Russia “the military aggressor and, accordingly, a rogue state.”
Becoming a great scientific nation “cannot be achieved in the present conditions, when the lives of our closest colleagues — mathematicians in Ukraine… are in danger because of the Russian army.”
“Russia finds itself in a situation of international isolation, without the possibility to conduct in-depth scientific exchanges or work with scientists in other countries,” the letter said.
“We are convinced that no geopolitical interest can justify this death and bloodshed. War will only lead to the total loss of our country.”
Western sanctions have cut Russia off from many global initiatives over the last week. NASA is exploring ways to keep the International Space Station, long home to both astronauts and cosmonauts, in orbit without Russian help.
The European Space Agency meanwhile said a joint mission using a Russian launcher to land a European rover on Mars was “very unlikely” to take off this year as planned.

Nearly 1,000 foreign fighters from Germany traveled to Ukraine
Number of volunteers who joined Ukraine’s international legion almost doubled in a week, according to Bild daily
09.03.2022
Nearly 1,000 foreign fighters from Germany have traveled to Ukraine to join the international legion to fight against Russia, Bild daily reported on Wednesday.
More than 22,000 volunteers from around the world have so far joined Ukraine’s International Territorial Defense Legion, Ukrainian officials told the newspaper.
In the first week of the war, nearly 500 people from Germany traveled to Ukraine to fight against the Russian troops, and this number has now reached to 1,000, according to the report.
There was no reliable information about the nationalities or the political affiliations of the volunteers.
German authorities said last week that there could be Ukrainian residents among those volunteers, but also German extremists, as well as neo-Nazis.
Authorities so far identified less than 10 individuals, with ties to far-right groups, Interior Ministry spokesman Maximilian Kall told a news conference on Friday.
The Ukrainian government created an international legion last month, soon after Russian troops began their military offensive on Feb. 24 , and invited foreigners who are willing to defend the country to join the fight.
At least 474 civilians have been killed and 861 injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, according to the UN, which noted that conditions on the ground make it difficult to verify the true number.

Pentagon, Ngũ giác đài từ chối kế hoạch hỗ trợ chiến đấu cơ của Ba Lan cho Ukraine bằng cách thành lập vựa ve chai ở căn cứ quân sự Mỹ trên nước Đức.
' High risk': US to oppose any plans to provide MiG fighter jets to Ukraine
The Pentagon on Wednesday (local time) said it would oppose any plans to provide MiG fighter jets to Ukraine, calling it "high-risk".
The Pentagon on Wednesday (local time) said it would oppose any plans to provide MiG fighter jets to Ukraine, calling it "high-risk".
"We do not support the transfer of additional fighter aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force at this time and therefore have no desire to see them in our custody either," Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said.
He also said: "We believe the best way to support the Ukrainian defence is by providing them with the weapons and assistance that they need most to defeat Russian aggression, in particular, anti-armour and air defence."
"We assess that adding aircraft to the Ukrainian inventory is not likely to significantly change the effectiveness of the Ukrainian Air Force. Therefore, we believe that the gain from transferring those MiG-29s is low," he added.
Addressing media, Kirby said that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Polish counterpart and said that the US is pursuing other options that would provide more critical military needs to Ukraine such as air defense and anti-armor weapons systems.
"As for the Patriot missiles, yes, this is a temporary deployment to Poland, given the circumstances that we're in. These Patriot batteries had already been deployed in Germany, and I suspect that at the appropriate time they'll go back there," Kirby said during a press briefing.
The US is currently having discussions with several countries about surface-to-air missiles, which he said the Ukrainians are more trained and more equipped to operate.
At least 516 civilians have been killed and 908 others injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war against its neighbour on February 24, according to UN figures, with the real toll, feared to be higher.
More than 2.1 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries, according to the UN Refugee Agency.

One of world's deadliest snipers leaves home in Canada to fight in Ukraine: 'I have to help'
'They were so happy to have us,' the former Canadian soldier said of Ukrainians welcoming him
A former Canadian soldier known as one of the world’s deadliest snipers arrived to Ukraine to help the nation defend itself from Russia.
"I want to help them. It's as simple as that," the Canadian man, only identified as Wali to protect his family’s safety, told CBC. "I have to help because there are people here being bombarded just because they want to be European and not Russian."
Wali is a former sniper with the Royal Canadian 22nd Regiment who previously fought in the Afghanistan War. He has a kill distance of over two miles, according to the Mirror, and is known as one of the world’s most deadly snipers.
He crossed into Ukraine on March 1 along with three other former Canadian soldiers after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on foreigners to join the war against Russia’s invasion.
"They were so happy to have us," Wali told the CBC of the people who greeted the former soldiers with hugs as they entered Ukraine. "It's like we were friends right away."
Wali, 40, has a young family and works as a civilian computer programmer. He said the "hardest part" of making the decision to join the war was missing his son’s first birthday.
"A week ago, I was still programming stuff," he said. "Now I’m grabbing anti-tank missiles in a warehouse to kill real people. … That’s my reality right now."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said earlier this week that more than 20,000 people across dozens of countries have traveled to Ukraine to fight.
