The 9 secrets of a healthy, long life - Shine Holistic

https://www.shineholistic.co.uk/blog/the...long-life/

With the right lifestyle, the experts tell us, the chances are that you could live up to a decade longer. But what’s the best prescription for long health? Is there a stand-out combination of diet and supplements that enhances lifespan and quality of life?

In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic and hired the world’s best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably longer. In these so-called Blue Zones they discovered that people reach 100 years at rates ten times greater than the average. Teams of scientists were taken to each location to identify the lifestyle characteristics that might unlock the secrets of longevity.

They found that every Blue Zone resident shared nine specific characteristics.

1. Move naturally

Those who live longest don’t pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving as part of their daily routines. They will grow their own gardens and tend not to have mechanical conveniences for housework.

2. A sense of purpose

Call it ikigai like the Okinawans, or plan de vida like the Nicoyans, but it means the same thing: a very strong sense of exactly why one wakes up in the morning. Having a strong sense of purpose is apparently worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy.

3. Take it down a gear or two

Stress, of course, affects even people in the Blue Zones. It can lead to chronic inflammation which is associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that we lack are routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians harness the healing power of a happy hour.

4. The 80% rule

Hara hachi bu is the Okinawan’s 2,500-year old Confucian mantra. It is said before every meal to remind them to stop eating when their stomachs are 80% full. This 20% gap between not being hungry and feeling full helps them to maintain an optimum weight.

5. Plant power

Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat, usually pork, is eaten on average just five times each month. Serving sizes are typically 3-4oz, or roughly the size of a deck of cards.

6. Everything in moderation

People in all Blue Zones, with the exception of Adventists, drink alcohol moderately and regularly. Moderate drinkers have been found to live longer than non-drinkers. The trick is to drink just one or two glasses each day, preferably of Sardinian Cannonau wine. Enjoy them with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save your daily glasses up for the weekend and tip fourteen glasses down your neck on Saturday night.

7. A sense of belonging

All but five of the 263 centenarians interviewed belonged to a faith-based community. Denomination doesn’t seem to matter. Research shows that attending faith-based services four times each month will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.

8. Family first

Who’d have thought that secret to a long life was putting your family first? This means keeping ageing parents and grandparents nearby or in the home. This simple act of devotion also appears to lower disease and mortality rates for the children in your home too. Committing to a life partner can add up to three years of life expectancy, and investing your time and love in your children helps too (not least because they’ll be more likely to care for you when your time comes).

9. Tribe vibes

The world’s longest-lived people choose to live, or were born into, social circles that support healthy behaviours. Okinawans, for example, create moais which are groups of five friends that commit to each other for life. Indeed, research has shown that there is a social side to smoking, obesity, and even happiness and loneliness. The social networks of people enjoying a long life favourably shape their health behaviours.

It may be that to make it to 100 years, you actually have to be a genetic lottery winner. Even so, most of us have the capacity to make it well into our early 90s, and largely without suffering chronic disease. The average person’s life expectancy could increase by as much as 10-12 years simply by adopting a Blue Zone lifestyle.

Are you in the zone? Practical things you can do to live longer

Chuck out those conveniences

Lose the remote, buy a light garage door and lift it yourself.

Eat nuts

Have a can of nuts around your office or home and eat a handful daily.

Drink Sardinian wine

Sardinian Cannonau wine has the world’s highest levels of antioxidants. Feel free to drink a glass or two a day.

Play with your children

Strengthen your health with low-intensity exercise and strengthen your family bonds at the same time. Both things are associated with a longer life.

Grow a garden

Gardening reduces stress, offers regular exercise and provides a harvest of fresh, healthy vegetables.

Take an hour of power

Downshift daily with a nap, meditation, prayer or a quiet walk because de-stressing is a proven way to slow ageing.

Eat fermented soya

Arguably the world’s most perfect food, fermented soya is eaten by the women in the world who live the longest. It contains a plant oestrogen that makes their skin look younger too.

Get a tan

Almost anathema to say it in our age of sunscreen, but doctors are beginning to re-think the possible negative effects of always slopping on the protection. Up to half of Westerners are vitamin D deficient – a condition that can double your chance of dying in any given year. A tan, it seems, not only looks healthy, but is healthy.

Give your best, large dinner plates to the charity shop

Invest instead in nine-inch plates similar to those the Okinawans use. Portion control on a plate, quite literally this can reduce your calorie consumption at dinner by 20-30%.

Write down your personal mission

Knowing and putting into practice your mission gives you a powerful sense of purpose that, in turn, can bless you with a decade extra of a healthy life.

(Quora) What are some jaw-dropping conversations people have overheard?

Answered by Sheree MacDonald:

Related: What is the best conversation you have overheard?

I was visiting my grandparents a few years ago. The mail arrived, which is pretty riveting stuff at their age. Seriously, my grandpa would wait for the mail every day and knew down to the minute when it should arrive.

Anyway.

My grandpa shuffled out to gather the loot and brought in the pile of envelopes and packages to my grandma. It was his job to fetch it and her job to go through it.

The conversation that followed still makes me chuckle.

Grandma: Bill, there’s a coupon in here for hearing aids. We might want to look into that for you.

Grandpa: What?

Grandma: A coupon. It’s a coupon for hearing aids.

Grandpa: What’d you say?

Grandma: HEARING AIDS! IT’S A COUPON FOR HEARING AIDS!

Grandpa: Hearing aids? What the hell do I need those for?

(Quora) What does it mean when your husband says that he will make all decisions?

Answered by Angela Birch:

Well in our marriage I would point out “no dear, I will decide what divorce lawyer I hire to dump you.”

I did know a woman whose husband said that and she said OK. she then did nothing. He wanted dinner he decides what it is and cooks it. She badgered him with questions constantly even calling him at work to ask. “What time should I take a shower” then calling back to ask “what soap should I use” then calling back to ask if she should shampoo her hair then it was what towel, the blue one or the green one.

The moment he hit the door she was asking “should I sweep the kitchen?” “what are you going to buy for dinner” “what soap for the dishwasher” “ when should I clean the toilet,” She spent most of the day compiling decisions for him to make. After a week of making all the decisions he crawled down from his idiocy and literally begged her to make most of the decisions he really didn’t want her calling him at work during a meeting to ask if their daughters hair should be braided or not or if their son should wear his sandals or closed shoes. I think the final straw was when she called his office during the lunch hour and left a message with the receptionist saying she started her period should she use a pad or a tampon. The receptionist put it up on the message board open and almost everyone in the office got a peek and teased him about it.

(Quora) What is that one picture that describes the lowest point in your life?

Answered by Kassidy Kennedy:

Sure, why not? Maybe it will help someone.. ♡

Myself, June 2018 - 10 years deep into snorting oxys like oxygen. House in foreclosure, car repoed, marriage on the rocks, job in danger, kids whose mom was always dope sick or sick sick from the drugs.. I can't imagine it could've gotten much worse at this point…

Me, now. 2 years and 4 months clean. Completely on my own, cold turkey. Kept my job and ended up getting a much better one. Saved my house and am now selling for something better. Got my car back (and turned it in as it was a lease) about 2 weeks ago. Homeschooling my kids and actively participating in their lives…

If I can do it, you can too. I promise! ♡

Commented by Mark Surface:
Bless you! I worked in a deli and had a customer come in all the time for 2 yrs she was just like your first picture situation .. complete with 2 dirty hungry sweet kids. Because I was a lowly deli clerk in a store who only saw kings and queens, it was horrible. She would curse and threaten me 2–3 times every week. Then my dept and store bosses would do the same thing threatening to write me up and fire me. Meanwhile I a hardworking person with a bedridden disabled husband. Was so glad she finally got her life together. An apology would have been nice but who knows if she knew how bad she was acting. I don't know I have never even been inebriated. Our bosses have no excuse for their responses other than ignorance and inflated egos. Life goes on. I left that job in Jan as it got worst. I commend you for your strength and desire to change. You are glowing. I on the other hand after years of being the recipient of other people's wackiness and being a caregiver I look worse than picture one. I never smoked, drank nor took drugs...I am now the joyless one . That woman and a few more just entitled people have know idea the damage they cause others by their actions. You can't say just ignore it because your bosses use that farce as an opportunity to torture us . You look great

Five people were fatally shot, including an 8-year-old, in a Cleveland, Texas, home after a Friday night rampage that started with a noise complaint about gunfire, according to the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office.

The gunman, who remains at large, was apparently shooting a rifle in his yard when neighbors asked him to stop because a baby was trying to sleep, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said. The suspect then opened fire on the neighbors, Capers said.

Authorities found the victims Friday night after receiving a harassment report about 11:30 p.m. local time, the sheriff said.
"The victims, they came over to the fence said, 'Hey, could you mind not shooting out in the yard. We have a young baby that is trying to go sleep,'" Capers said.

The suspect, who had been drinking, responded, "I'll do what I want to in my front yard."

A doorbell camera at the home of the victims at some point captured the suspect approaching with his rifle, Capers said.

Multiple people were shot around the residence, Capers said. Two female victims in a bedroom used their bodies to shield two young children who survived, he added.
"They were trying to take care of them babies and keep them babies alive," Capers said of the victims.

The victims were shot above the neck at close range -- "almost execution style," according to Capers.

More than 170 mass shootings in the US this year

There have been at least 174 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Both CNN and the archive define a "mass shooting" as a shooting that injured or killed four or more people, not including the shooter.

"It's not just at banks, schools, supermarkets, or churches where Americans fear becoming victims of a mass shooting," Kris Brown, president of Brady, a gun violence prevention organization, said in a statement.

"People in this country are being gunned down with assault weapons in their own home, and that is the horrifying reality we will continue to live under until our norms and policies change."

There were 10 people inside the home at the time of the shooting, according to the sheriff.

The victims range in age from 8 to about 40, Capers told reporters early Saturday. The 8-year-old victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Three people were taken to hospital, and two were evaluated at the scene and released, according to authorities.

The victims' identities are unknown. The sheriff said the victims are from Honduras, and some had arrived at the home from Houston in recent days.

Capers identified the suspect as 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza. Authorities have a copy of the suspect's consulate card and are looking for him.

The FBI Houston Field Office is assisting in the manhunt, the agency said via Twitter.

Authorities had received previous reports about the suspect firing a rifle in his yard.

The suspect was known to shoot a .223 rifle, according to Capers. Shell casings were discovered outside the home. At least three weapons were found in the home of the suspect.

Authorities believe the gunman is no longer in the area. A local judge issued an arrest warrant for the suspect. Investigators have spoken with the gunman's wife.
CNN has reached out to authorities for more information.

Cleveland is about an hour northeast of Houston.

Allen shooting at shopping center leaves 8 dead, plus shooter - The Texas Tribune

Gunman kills 8 people at a North Texas outlet mall
The shooter was also killed by a police officer after he opened fire in Allen. Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy.”

A gunman killed eight people Saturday afternoon and wounded at least seven more after he opened fire at an outlet mall in Allen, creating a scene of panic and bloodshed in the latest mass shooting in Texas.

The massacre ended when a police officer who had responded to the mall for another reason quickly arrived and shot and killed the gunman, who authorities said acted alone.

Police did not release any information about the shooter or his victims in a pair of brief press conferences that offered few details of the shooting. But a spokesperson for a nearby hospital system told the New York Times that the ages of victims ranged from 5 to 61 years old.

Local police responded to the shooting just after 3:30 p.m. at Allen Premium Outlets north of Plano, an outdoor shopping center with restaurants and clothing stores. Allen Fire Chief Jon Boyd said that seven people were declared dead on the scene. Two more died at the hospital. Of the others hospitalized, three were in "critical surgery" as of 9 p.m. Saturday, Boyd said.

Videos from the scene posted on social media showed people sprinting away from the stores in the parking lot as shots rang out. One showed a gunman stepping out of a car just outside the mall and opening fire at people on the sidewalk.

Greg Abbott Slammed for Tweet After Mass Shooting: 'No Shame’

BY THOMAS KIKA ON 4/29/23 AT 6:33 PM EDT

TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT WAS GRILLED ON SOCIAL MEDIA FOR A LIGHTHEARTED POST IN THE WAKE OF A GRISLY MASS SHOOTING IN HIS STATE.

At least five people were killed in a Friday shooting at a property in Cleveland, Texas, a city located roughly 55 miles northeast of Houston. Three of the victims were female, with the other two being male, including an eight-year-old boy. At least three other minors were found uninjured by responding officers, including two children located underneath two of the female victims.

The suspect, 39-year-old Francisco Oropeza, remains at large after the incident, with a local FBI field office assisting in the search and a judge issuing an arrest warrant with a $5 million bond. Police reported that Oropeza allegedly carried out the shooting using an AR-15-style rifle after the victims, who were his neighbors, asked him to stop firing a gun in his front yard because it was keeping a baby awake.

As of Saturday evening, several hours after the news about the grisly shooting emerged, Governor Abbott, a Republican, had yet to issue a public statement about the situation. At approximately 12:30 p.m. local time, Abbott's official Twitter account instead shared a lighthearted post featuring a photo of his dog, declaring, "All smiles for the weekend."

Abbott's lack of a response to the tragedy unfolding in Cleveland was swiftly denounced by many on Twitter, including Brett Cross, a parent who lost his child at the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde last May.

"All smiles this weekend? No mention of the 5 that were murdered for asking a man to quit shooting so they could sleep?" Cross wrote. "The same damn smiles after Uvalde. The same damn smiles after Santa Fe. The same damn smiles after El Paso X2. F*** you and your smile."

The Texas Signal, which touts itself as the "largest progressive media company" in the Lone Star State, gave a succinct response to Abbott's post, alongside a link to another of their tweets about the situation: "No shame."

"Most Texans woke up to the news of the horrific killing of an innocent family by a lethal AR-15," the Signal's official account wrote. "Greg Abbott is tweeting about having a great weekend. He signed permitless carry into law last session. We deserve better than Texas Republicans."
"Five more innocent people dead because of gun violence," another user, Marlene Robertson, wrote. "I guess this is Greg Abbott's way of thanking them for their sacrifice."

"And Greg Abbott responds— with a photo of his dog," political scientist Norman Ornstein wrote. "Pro-death governor of Texas."

On Sunday, the day after the comments calling out his lack of a response, a spokesperson for Abbott provided Newsweek with an official statement on the shooting.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims taken in this horrible tragedy. The criminal who killed these 5 victims was in the country illegally and had been previously deported 4 times," the statement read. "President Biden's open border policies are deadly — whether it is crimes like this or the thousands killed by fentanyl being smuggled across the border. The Governor is working with the Texas Department of Public Safety and other state and local officials to ensure that all available resources are used to respond to this crime. It's time for President Biden to end his dangerous open border policies and enforce the immigration laws."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott dismissed gun control legislation as a "quick solution" that won't solve the problem, telling "Fox News Sunday" that addressing mental health issues is the long-term solution.

"I was on the phone with 911 and I was telling them we have a mass casualty incident," he said. "The first girl I walked up to was crouched down covering her head in the bushes, so I felt for a pulse, pulled her head to the side and she had no face."

A tale from the wild, wild West ...

An old woman walked up and tied her old mule to the hitching post. As she stood there, brushing some of the dust from her face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. He looked at the woman and laughed, "Hey old woman, have you ever danced?" The woman looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No ... I never did dance ... Never really wanted to."

A crowd has gathered as the young gunslinger grinned and said, "Well you old bag, you're gonna dance now!", and started shooting at the old woman's feet.

The old woman prospector - not wanting to have her toes blown off- started hopping around. Many were laughing. When his last bullet was fired, the gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.

The old woman turned to her pack mule, pulled out a double barreled shotgun and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air, and the crowd immediately stopped laughing.

The gunslinger heard the sounds too, and turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening. The crowd watched tensely as he stared at the woman and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels.

The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in her hands as she quietly said, "Son, have you ever kissed a mule's ass?"

The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "No m'am, but I've always wanted too."

THERE ARE LESSONS HERE FOR ALL OF US:

1 - Never be arrogant.
2 - Don't waste ammunition.
3 - Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are.
4 - Always make sure you know who has the power.

A new bartender is working the saloon in Dodge City

When a cowboy burst through the doors from the street shouting, "Look out everybody, Big Bill Johnson is coming to town!"

The saloon burst into a panicked commotion as everyone scrambled for the door. In the rush, the bartender is knocked down and passes out.

When he came to, he heard the sound of heavy boots pacing across the floor, and the jingle of spurs with each step. From where he lay, he could see out the door to where a grizzly bear with a saddle was tied to the hitching post outside. Trembling with fear, he closed his eyes and silently prayed for mercy when suddenly, a large hand grabbed him by the collar and set him up straight back behind the bar.

When he had the courage to open his eyes again, he was staring into the meanest, foulest looking face he had ever seen. It was covered with scars. Tobacco stains spotted his whiskers, and a dirty patch covered his left eye. He had to have been nearly seven feet tall. He aimed a fine stream of spit toward the brass spittoon and look straight in the bartender's gaze. "Give me a whiskey", he demanded.

The bartender could hardly control his trembling hands or remember where the finest bottle of whiskey was kept. He set down a glass and tried not to spill a drop as he filled it to the brim. The man grabbed the glass, which looked like a thimble in his giant hands. He downed it in one shot, and then stood up to leave.

"S-sir, would you like another glass on the house?" asked the bartender, trying to earn favor with the stranger.

The giant turned around and said, "I ain't got time for another glass- didn't you hear? Big Bill Johnson is coming to town!"

Two Mexicans riding a bicycle

Two Mexicans are riding a bicycle on a road about 15 miles outside of Lafayette , LA. One of the bike's tires goes flat and they start hitching a lift back into town. A friendly trucker stops to see if he can help and the Mexicans ask him for a ride. He tells them they can ride in the trailer if they could fit in with 20,000 bowling balls he is hauling.

They manage to squeeze themselves and their bike into the back and the driver shuts the doors and gets on his way. Wanting to make up time the trucker speeds up. Sure enough a blonde cop pulls him over for speeding. The officer asks the driver what he is carrying, to which the driver jokingly replies "Mexican eggs."

The Blond Lady Cop obviously doesn't believe this so she takes a look in the trailer. She opens the back door and shocked, quickly shuts it and locks it. She calls for immediate backup from headquarters, the Border Patrol and the Swat Team. The dispatcher asks what emergency she has that requires so many officers.

"I stopped a Tractor-Trailer with 20,000 Mexican eggs in it... two have hatched and they've already stolen a bicycle."

John Wayne replies "Well, the wind and rain causes my mouth to get all dry and chapped"

Eat more beans. Please.

Beans are protein-rich, sustainable, and delicious. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?

By Julieta Cardenas  May 12, 2023, 1:45pm EDT

What kind of protein we eat has huge implications for our health — and well beyond.

Besides the health, ethical, or religious reasons why people choose to stop eating meat, the way animals are raised to be food has enormous impacts on land use, deforestation, and carbon emissions. And as the global population continues to grow, per-capita meat production to meet that demand is growing even faster.

In the last decade, alternative meat options, like Impossible and Beyond, rose as a potential solution, a product that can substitute for animal meat without the ethical and planetary penalties. But plant-based proteins have been hitting a wall: inflation, politicization of food, and supply-chain hurdles punctured the hype — at least for now.

However, there’s a simple way to provide plenty of protein that doesn’t require animals or plant-based startups: beans. Beans are high in protein, efficient to grow, and can even improve soil health. They cost less than conventional or new plant-based meats, and they’re increasingly getting attention among foodies.

As one global campaign to double bean consumption by 2028 frames it, the answer to the question of how we can get inexpensive protein without sacrificing animals or the planet is simple: “Beans is how.”

There’s just one problem: Beans and legumes suffer from a public relations problem in the US, where the average person eats only around 7.5 pounds of beans per year, compared to 12 pounds in the UK and as much as 130 pounds in countries like Rwanda and Burundi. Beans can make you gassy, there’s a cooking learning curve, and a socioeconomic stigma around them still lingers.

But if we’re serious about changing how we think about our agricultural resources, beans can be a champion for delicious, sustainable, and affordable protein.
