Musella is endemic to South West Yunnan and the places it grows are high mountains up to 2500 m altitude where winters can be quite frosty. The banana, formerly one of the sacred flowers of local Buddhism, has become very rare as it served a food for people and livestock during harsh times.

We found specimen in the garden of a buddhist monastery near the border to Myanmar. We propagated it successfully and now the first harvest of seeds is available. We will make sure that this extraordinary beautiful species will retain a viable population in Yunnan. 

We have consequently cultivated the species to ensure its survival and have now produced quantities that can be exported in moderate numbers.

Golden Lotus is used as an ornament in Buddhist monasteries of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China


The newly starting inflorescence is occasionally copied in ornamental design.
