This is guidance to our Ukrainian friends in how to continue to communicate securely despite the Russian military knocking at your door. With all of these, make sure you don’t choose Russian suppliers. 

1.      Move onto secure communication text messaging. These are secure messaging platforms that encrypt your communications. So that’s Signal, Tezro, Wickr…. there are loads of others. Depending on the app you choose take these additional steps: a) set your messages to disappear after a short time frame (eg 1 hour), b) ensure you turn on two factor authentication, c) turn on censorship circumvention on, and d) hide Screen in App Switcher.  

2.      Use a VPN on your phone and your computer. Lots of good (and free/low cost) options available, Look for one that has a) dynamic VPN routing (so if the adversary shuts down one IP address, your VPN will automatically look to use another one), and b) a strict no-log policy.  

3.      Set up a fully encrypted email.  Again lots of free good options available. Protonmail, gmail, hushmail and others.

4.      Store all your data in the cloud.  Do not put any of it on your laptop. Wipe your computer and reset it to factory defaults to get rid of shadow documents. Only access your data through the web interface. 

5.      Store your contact list in the cloud.  It will always be there even if your devices are destroyed. 

6.      Use a secure private browser like Firefox, Bromite, DuckDuck Go, Chromium, Bromite, Brave, and others…. Also a) set your browser to delete your browsing history every 1 hour or whenever you close your laptop, b) block cookies, tracking content, cryptominers, fingerprinters etc.
