Remorseful Shell abandons Russian oil

March 8 (Reuters) - Shell (SHEL.L) stopped buying Russian crude on Tuesday and said it would phase out its involvement in all Russian hydrocarbons from oil to natural gas over Ukraine, becoming one of the first major Western oil companies to abandon Russia entirely.

While Russian crude and gas has been exempt so far from Western sanctions, oil soared above $139 a barrel on Monday to its highest since July 2008 as the United States and European allies began to consider banning Russian oil imports.

U.S. lawmakers have called for bans but President Joe Biden's administration has only sanctioned Russian oil tankers. Britain and Canada have also barred Russian vessels from landing at their ports in protest at Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Shell apologised on Tuesday for buying Russian oil last week after it had said it would pull out of its Russian operations, including the Sakhalin 2 LNG plant in which it holds a 27.5% stake and which is operated by Gazprom.

"We are acutely aware that our decision last week to purchase a cargo of Russian crude oil ... was not the right one and we are sorry," Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden said.

Shell bought a cargo of Russian crude oil from Swiss trader Trafigura at a record low of dated Brent minus $28.50 a barrel, traders said on Friday.

British rival BP said last month it was abandoning its 19.75% stake in Russian oil giant Rosneft (ROSN.MM) in an abrupt move that could cost it up to $25 billion.

TotalEnergies (TTEF.PA) Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne said on Monday that the French company had stopped buying oil from Russia, although one its landlocked refineries in Germany continued to receive Russian crude by pipeline. read more

Shell said it would change its crude oil supply chain to remove volumes from Russia "as fast as possible" and shut its service stations in Russia, as well as its aviation fuels and lubricants operations in the country.

The company said the supply chain change could take weeks to complete and would lead to reduced output from some of its refineries while its withdrawal from Russian petroleum products, pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) would be phased.

The company also plans to end its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 Baltic gas pipeline linking Russia to Germany, which it helped finance as a part of a consortium.

👉Canada prepared to welcome an 'unlimited number' of Ukrainians fleeing war, minister says

"Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced Thursday the federal government has created two new pathways for Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn country to come to Canada — part of a plan to accept an "unlimited number" of people who want to leave.

To start, Fraser said his department has created a new visa category that will allow a limitless number of Ukrainians to come to Canada to live, work or study here for up to two years.
"

Germany registers over 64,000 refugees from Ukraine

More than 64,000 refugees have arrived in Germany from Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, according to Germany's interior ministry.
On Tuesday, the ministry said it had registered 64,604 refugees from Ukraine, more than 14,310 refugees from the day before.
The actual number of incoming refugees, however, could be significantly higher, an interior spokesperson told CNN Tuesday.
More than two million people have fled Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Nearly 5,000 Ukrainians have arrived in France, and more are on the way, French official says
From CNN’s Joseph Ataman and Camille Knight
French Minister Delegate for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa said an estimated 5,000 Ukrainians have so far arrived in France, with more arriving every day.
“We have close to 5,000 people from Ukraine who have arrived in France. It’s a current estimate; every day, we have new arrivals,” she said in an interview with French broadcaster Franceinfo Tuesday.
Schiappa said that every Ukrainian in need of accommodation would receive it in France, but she added that Ukrainians were not collectively being granted refugee status, as many hope to return to their country.
Instead, they are being offered a “temporary, immediate status” with the same guarantees of protection as refugee status, she said, adding that this will also offer recipients access to schooling and financial and medical support.
She also announced a “refugee sponsorship system” via a new platform. The site parrainage.refugies.info will allow French households to host a Ukrainian family with the support of nongovernmental organizations.

Ferrari Donates €1M To Ukraine, Lamborghini Halts Business In Russia  Innocent

Ferrari is also suspending vehicle production for the Russian market.

Automakers this week continued to react to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces last month. Both Lamborghini and Ferrari have made announcements regarding the ongoing conflict, with the two altering business operations and donating to charities that help Ukrainians.

Lamborghini made its announcement on Twitter, saying that it’s preparing an unspecified donation to UN Refugee Aid, which has been active in Ukraine since 2014. The supercar maker also said it would put its business operations with Russian on hold. Lamborghini is part of VW Group that owns Porsche, both of which have donated €1 million ($1.1 million at today’s exchange rate) to UN Refugee Aid.

Ferrari made a similar move. It said it would donate €1 million to support Ukrainians in need, directing money toward international humanitarian projects. The automaker will also invest in local initiatives to receive refugees in the Italian region while going a step further to send aid to Association Chernobyl of Maranello, Fiorano, Formigine to help refugees settled near the company.

Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said that the company “stands alongside” affected Ukrainians, adding, “While we hope for a rapid return to dialogue and a peaceful solution, we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of everyone affected. Our thoughts and support go out to them.” Ferrari also announced it would suspend vehicle production for the Russian market.

The donations from Ferrari and Lamborghini are just two of several automakers trying to aid those affected by the war. Nissan and Stellantis have also donated €1 million to help Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. However, automakers have gone even further by suspending operations and sales in Russia as the international community condemns the violence.

Toyota said it was closing its St. Petersburg factory that builds the Camry and RAV4 for the Russian market. Honda, General Motors, and Mazda have halted exports to Russia while Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover have joined others, like Ford, in suspending operations there. The conflict is also compounding ongoing supply chain issues in the industry.

Soldiers defending Ukraine's Odessa give flowers for Women's Day  Heavy-black-heart4

ODESSA, March 8 (Reuters) - They fear a Russian attack is imminent, but soldiers in Ukraine's Odessa took time to buy friends and family flowers for Women's Day on Tuesday even though life in the Black Sea port has been turned upside down.

"I bought flowers, oddly enough, for my mother-in-law and my wife to congratulate them on March 8," said Yuriy, a reservist in Ukraine's Territorial Defence forces, speaking by a street stall selling pots of brightly coloured hyacinths and cyclamen, and bunches of tulips.

"War or no war, our women need to be protected, loved and respected."

Odessa is home to one million people and its port is crucial to Ukraine's economy. Locals have been filling bags with sand on the beach to build barriers in the historic city and taking part in weapons training, amid mounting dread of an attack as Russian forces move through Ukraine.

Pentagon officials said on Monday that the city of Kherson, some 145 km (90 miles) east of Odessa, has been taken by Russian troops and Ukraine Maritime Administration officials said heavy fighting has reached the town of Mykolaiv, between Odessa and Kherson.

Soldier Dmitriy clutched pink and yellow tulips which he had bought his fellow female soldiers.

"They [women] also serve (in the army), they also protect our country, they also help us, they bring positivity... we must always remember them."

International Women's Day aims to recognize the achievements of women and highlight the campaign for gender equality. It has a long tradition in eastern European countries and across the former Soviet Union, where men often mark the day by buying flowers or gifts for women.

Flower vendor Alena tied a bouquet of blue and yellow tulips, the national colours of Ukraine.

"I made it for peace, for peace everywhere," she said.
