Happy Mother's Day! Thầy hỏi vì sao, anh ta nói, dạ thưa thầy khi đúc chuông đánh cho ra chữ Buông, con quên chữ G, nên con thành thương gia. https://www.facebook.com/notes/767016687411914/ RE: Linh Tinh - LTP - LeThanhPhong - 2022-05-09 Cat with Short Legs Looks Like a Tiny Potato - GISELLE | The Dodo Little But Fierce RE: Linh Tinh - LTP - LeThanhPhong - 2022-05-09 Baby Seal Choking from String Big Seal RESCUED from 45 strands of fishing line Choking Seal Can Finally Breathe Again Choking Seal Rescued Seal Rescued from Choking Seal "Julius" FINALLY rescued! In lên vết son đỏ chói. Năm nay tôi hai mươi lăm tuổi Đứa bé mồ côi thành nhà văn Nhưng lời mẹ dặn thuở lên năm Vẫn nguyên vẹn màu son chói đỏ. Người làm xiếc đi dây rất khó Nhưng chưa khó bằng làm nhà văn Đi trọn đời trên con đường chân thật. Yêu ai cứ bảo là yêu Ghét ai cứ bảo là ghét Dù ai ngon ngọt nuông chiều Cũng không nói yêu thành ghét Dù ai cầm dao doạ giết Cũng không nói ghét thành yêu. Tôi muốn làm nhà văn chân thật chân thật trọn đời Đường mật công danh không làm ngọt được lưỡi tôi Sét nổ trên đầu không xô tôi ngã Bút giấy tôi ai cướp giật đi Tôi sẽ dùng dao viết văn lên đá. (1957) RE: Linh Tinh - LTP - LeThanhPhong - 2022-05-10 (Quora) There are many Quorans who list their educational credentials as "School of Hard Knocks" and make many thousands of comments about current political issues. In general, do you find their answers as useful as people who list actual degrees? Answered by Alex Johnston: No, I don’t. I was first attracted to Quora in 2016 not so much because of the shiny user interface, or the prospect of answering questions about stuff I liked, but because of the people on it who clearly knew more than I did, about stuff I wanted to know about. People like Robert Frost, and Michael Masiello, and Rachel Anderson, and Claire Jordan, and Feifei Wang. Very different people with very different styles of writing and very different areas of expertise, but they all knew far more about spaceflight or literature or autism or evolution or China than I did. But over time, the site has seemed to acquire more and more people who didn’t seem to get that this site was meant for people who really knew stuff, to share what they know. Instead, there are more and more people who think that this site is for people who don’t really know stuff, to share whatever they think they know. An awful lot of these people give their credentials as ‘Ph.D from School of Hard Knocks’. This prompted Feifei’s immortal line, You are not a PhD. of anything just because you lived your life. Now, at the bottom of this, I think that there’s a sincere and robust sense of democracy at work, like: I’m as good as anyone else, I’m as worthy of a fair hearing as anyone else, just cause you could afford letters after your name doesn’t make you intrinsically better than me. And, yes, everyone deserves the same dignity before the law, everyone deserves to have their vote counted, everyone deserves to be treated with fairness. I am not in every way better than you because I have letters after my name and you don’t. But this isn’t about that. The fact is, everyone’s opinion isn’t equally valuable. Personal digression: I recently read a biography of Vo Nguyen Giap, the Vietnamese general who beat the French at Dien Bien Phu and helped lead his country to the point when, well, the Americans left, which was his aim all along. And I’d love to write an answer about him. But I’m not going to. Why? Because I am familiar with the difference between having one or two confident feelings and a smidgeon of information about a topic, and really knowing what I’m talking about. I would become another one of Quora’s armchair generals, bloviating about something of which I really know very little. The great mathematician John von Neumann really knew about stuff. He made major contributions to so many different fields that it’s just ridiculous: he helped design the atomic bomb, played a large part in the creation of game theory and played an important role in the development of computing. He once wrote something which I think is very wise, and also relevant to this matter. It’s about the difference between knowing how to do something, and understanding how it works. A discussion of the nature of any intellectual effort is difficult per se—at any rate, more difficult than the mere exercise of that particular intellectual effort. It is harder to understand the mechanism of an airplane, and the theories of the forces which lift and which propel it, than merely to ride in it, to be elevated and transported by it—or even to steer it. Similarly, just because we’ve learned how to function at some level within society, doesn’t mean that we automatically understand how society in general works. Having a poorly-paid job doesn’t necessarily mean you understand the economy. And it has to be added that neither does being very rich. Owning and using a gun doesn’t necessarily mean you know more about the pros and cons of gun control than people who don’t own one. Fervently believing that God created the world in 4004 BC doesn’t mean that you get to insist that it actually happened. The problem with the School of Hard Knocks is that repeated hard knocks leave a person with trauma. And trauma doesn’t magically confer wisdom upon people. It just damages them. But I think a lot of people who’ve experienced trauma tell themselves that it does make them wise, so as to make the trauma itself seem less pointless and less damaging. And their unwisdom prevents them from understanding that the way that they think, might not be the only legitimate way to think: Here, education itself is compared to ‘brainwashing’ and illness. Health and sanity are held to be the province of the uneducated. This is bullshit. Noam Chomsky said once that an understanding of how the politics of a society work, and of what the genuinely crucial issues are that affect us all, is well within the grasp of the average person. And I agree. (Being the good left-wing anarchist he is, he was saying it in the context of brushing aside mandarin contempt for the political savvy of the average person, that sort of Well, you can’t expect the average Joe to understand the complexities of the situation, leave decision-making to the experts type of thing.) But that doesn’t mean that everyone in society actually has such a grasp. The internet has made it easier than ever for people to not merely not know how society works, but to be actively and grossly misinformed about how it works. Far too many people think that they’re experts on subjects that they are positively delusional about. (And, yes, some of these people have college degrees.) On this site, I’ve seen posts from normally-functioning members of society who manage to hold down responsible jobs while still believing that the Earth is flat. So, while I don’t automatically believe the word of anyone who’s got letters after their name—a BSc in computer science does not automatically mean that a person is likely to be well-informed about any other subject—I certainly don’t think that not having had higher education automatically makes a person more wise, or that having had it makes them less so. To me, the ‘School of Hard Knocks’ is not a credential in anything.
