Vatican Consultant Urges U.S. Priests To Refrain From Telling People Voting for Joe Biden Is A 'Mortal Sin'

https://www.newsweek.com/vatican-consultant-urges-us-priests-refrain-telling-people-voting-joe-biden-mortal-sin-1529545

BY BENJAMIN FEARNOW ON 9/3/20 AT 3:39 PM EDT

American Jesuit priest and Vatican consultant, Father James J. Martin, urged fellow Catholics and clergy against claiming a vote for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is a "mortal sin" on Thursday.

Martin, who Pope Francis appointed as a Vatican communications consultant in 2017, warned other Catholic priests against intertwining secular politics and their faith in God. Posting to social media, Martin said he has overheard an increasing number of priests and U.S. Catholic leaders making the claim that a vote for Biden—who is Catholic—amounts to one of the most grave offenses against God. Father Martin told Newsweek Thursday that he and fellow Catholics feel compelled to help on "any issues where life is endangered," which he said should include caring for the poor, the homeless and LGBTQ community - not just abortion.

Martin offered followers and fellow Catholics guidance on how to separate one's faith from divisive political topics including abortion or euthanasia.

"Dear friends: I'm seeing more priests saying that voting for Joe Biden is a mortal sin. It is not. It is not a sin to vote for either Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump. Nor is it a sin to be Democrat or Republican. Listen instead to what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says in their helpful document Faithful Citizenship about the role of conscience," Martin wrote, before quoting the USCCB guidance on "forming consciences" in the modern, secular political world.

"[We] bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth. We recognize that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well beyond casting a vote in a particular election."

According to the Saint Aquinas website, Catholic theology states that mortal sins cannot be done "accidentally," and a person who commits a sin of this level knew it was wrong beforehand, thus making their rejection of God's law and love "premeditated."

As Newsweek reported in June, both white Catholics and white evangelicals overwhelmingly support President Donald Trump's re-election effort this November. A large percentage of U.S. conservatives in Christian churches from all denominations have historically tied their Republican Party votes to the topic of abortion. A 2018 survey found a slight majority of GOP voters support the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortions, compared to nearly 90 percent of Democrats.
Martin told Newsweek Thursday that trying to talk politics at church or at home is clearly a daunting task—but one made easier by truly listening.

"Sometimes it's best to avoid those conversations in families. If you know it's just going to rile people up and cause division then I would avoid it. But if you do talk about it, frame it as a conversation where you're really listening, not simply waiting to pounce on the other person, to correct them or convince them. Also, it's always important to give the other person the benefit of the doubt," Father Martin said via email.

Biden is a practicing Catholic and surveys show more Americans believe he is religious in comparison to his GOP rival, Donald Trump. But despite this, a South Carolina church denied Biden communion over his stance on abortion last year. "Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other and the Church. Our actions should reflect that," said Rev. Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church. "Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching."

Martin is also an author of several books on Jesus' life and the Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life. In videos he posted across social media last week, Martin urged those of the Christian faith to support ongoing protests over racial injustice across the country. He said that to be truly "pro-life" one must have "reverence for all human life."

The New York-based priest quoted former Pope Benedict XVI (when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger), in helping Catholic congregants to not conflate religious and political issues.
"When a Catholic does not share a candidate's stand in favor of abortion and/or euthanasia, but votes for that candidate for other reasons, it is considered remote material cooperation, which can be permitted in the presence of proportionate reasons," Ratzinger wrote.

Martin was invited to offer the prayer at this year's Democratic National Convention, where he led the Benediction on the last night of the political event. He described it as a "prayer for a nation where every life is sacred, all people are loved and all are welcome."

Update (9/3/2020, 4:30 p.m.): This article has been updated to include comment from Father Martin.

Kentucky Bishop Says Trump Isn't Pro-Life Because 'He Is Only Concerned About Himself'

https://www.newsweek.com/kentucky-bishop-donald-trump-abortion-not-really-pro-life-1523809

BY JAMES CROWLEY ON 8/8/20 AT 12:31 PM

A Catholic bishop from Kentucky recently criticized President Donald Trump's stances on abortion only a week before candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden was attacked by Trump for his stances on religion and the Second Amendment.

The bishop called out the president by saying that he's "only concerned about himself," and isn't really pro-life.

In a Facebook live panel from Pax Romana held on July 31, panelists discussed an array of topics, including American parishes' responses to COVID-19 and the Catholic response to Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd's death. Pax Romana's Facebook post billed the panel as a discussion about "Church after 2020."

 \

The Lexington Diocese Bishop, Rev. John Stowe spoke out against Trump's stance on abortion, calling it disingenuous. The bishop was responding to a question about Catholic relationships to the upcoming election, especially considering the debate surrounding abortion. "For this president to call himself pro-life, and for anybody to back him because of claims of being pro-life, is almost willful ignorance," he said. "He is so much anti-life because he is only concerned about himself, and he gives us every, every, every indication of that."

The bishop said that he had discussions with people that were mostly concerned about the abortion issue, but he spoke about interpretations of papal documents in regard to pro-life issues that have been widely misunderstood by Catholics. He said that the rejection of Pope Francis' paragraph by American bishops about "what the real pro-life issues are from" Gaudete et Exsultate was "a sad day for the leadership of the church in the United States."

Stowe began his response by referencing Pope Francis. "He basically tells us, we can't claim to be pro-life if we support the separation of children from their parents at the U.S. border, if we support exposing people at the border to COVID-19, because of the facilities that we're in, if we support denying people who have [the] need to adequate healthcare access to that health care, if we keep people from getting the house or the education that they need, we cannot call ourselves pro-life," he said.

Stowe's criticisms of Trump comes about a week before the president took aim the presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden. In a speech on Thursday, Trump railed against Biden on topics of religion and the Second Amendment. "No religion, no anything, hurt the Bible, hurt God. He's against God. He's against guns. He's against energy-our kind of energy. I don't think he's gonna do too well in Ohio," he said.

In a June 23 interview, the president criticized his opponent's stances on abortion. "I'm pro-life; he's not, and the Democrats-look who he's putting on the court," he said. "I'm pro-life. The Democrats aren't. Nobody can say that Biden is-look at his stance over the years."

Recent studies have indicated that vigorous aerobic exercise can improve memory and reasoning in people with mild cognitive impairment, which is often a precursor to dementia. A team of Australian researchers has been studying whether resistance training has a similar effect.

The team recruited 68 women and 32 men ages 55 through 86, all of whom had mild cognitive impairment, and randomly assigned them to two groups. One group did weight training twice a week for six months, lifting 80% of the maximum amount they could. The other did stretching exercises.

All participants were given cognitive tests at the beginning and end of the study and 12 months after they finished the study. The group that did the weight training scored significantly higher at the end of the study than at the beginning and retained that gain at 12 months. The gain in test scores was also greatest for those who had the greatest gains in strength. The scores of the group who performed stretching exercises declined somewhat.

The results were published online Oct. 24, 2016, by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Allan Lichtman: The man who has correctly predicted US election since 1984

Allan Lichtman: The man who has correctly predicted US election since 1984
WION Web Team Washington, United States Oct 10, 2020, 06.55 PM(IST)

Trump will have to pack up his stuff and leave the White House.

--ooOoo--

Many have been trying to predict the result of the upcoming US elections, but all eyes are now set on the predictions of one man: Allan Lichtman.
A history professor, Allan Lichtman, is one of those rare experts who has correctly predicted all the US elections since 1984.
This year, the race to the White House is between the current US President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival and former Vice President Joe Biden.

[Image: 164346-allan-lichtman.jpg?itok=mj8gIjJa]
The two are running against each other to become the 46th President of the United States of America — which will also set a record of being the oldest President of the US.

13 Keys

Lichtman has created a system called 'The Keys to the White House' — more popularly known as the '13 Keys' model.

This model is a very basic and simple, yet an important way of predicting the election results. Lichtman has devised 13 questions or topics which he answers on True/False basis and thus predicts the next President.

As per this model, if majority questions are answered as true, then the current President gets to keep his room in the White House, and if not then it is time for a new face to represent the superpower.

The 13 topics on which he mulls are: Midterm Gains, No contest during nominations, Incumbent President seeking re-elections, No third party contesting the elections, Strong short term economy,  Strong long term economy, Major policy change, Scandals, Foreign/military failure, Foreign/military success, No social unrest, Charisma of the President, Charisma of the challenger.

The winner of 2020

So many astrologers, numerologists, ecnomic experts, political leaders and many more have been studying, polling and trying to predict who will be winner of the US elections this year.

However, Lichtman has given his answer.

"Donald Trump will become the first sitting President since Bill Clinton defeated George H W Bush in 1992 to lose a re-election bid," Lichtman predicted.

As per the expert Historian, this year he observed seven false and six true for the questions in his '13 Keys' model. So, as per the rules of the model — which has never been wrong — Trump will have to pack up his stuff and leave the White House.

"The secret is keeping your eye on the big picture of incumbent strength and performance. And don't pay any attention to the polls, the pundits, the day-to-day ups and downs of the campaign. And that's what the keys gauge. The big picture," Lichtman defended his prediction in an interview with the American channel CNN.

He also added that one of the biggest reasons for Trump losing to "sleepy Joe" will be the President's poor handling of the novel coronavirus — which he also contracted last week but claims to have recovered.

"He was in pretty good shape going into 2020 and then, as you point out, America was hit with the pandemic, the cries for social and racial justice, and Donald Trump reverted to his 2016 playbook where he was the challenger. But you can't talk your way out of it when it's your record," he told LBC in an interview.

He also added that Trump and the current members of the Republican party have had one of the rare times when a massive fortune of economy and a probable win was reversed within months due to one issue. Lichtman also added that things cannot go back to looking greener within few weeks time for Trump and that will cause his downfall in the upcoming elections that are scheduled for November 03.

However, people are calling US elections 2020 to be one of the most unpredictable elections in the history of the US. So, not everyone is betting on Lichtman's predictions this year. But whether or not Lichtman will be able to continue his 35 years plus strike will be revealed soon.

Allan Lichtman: The 13 Keys to the White House

https://voxpopulisphere.com/2020/08/21/allan-lichtman-the-13-keys-to-the-white-house/

The Keys are statements that favor victory (in the popular vote count) for the incumbent party. When five or fewer statements are false, the incumbent party is predicted to win the popular vote; when six or more are false, the challenging party is predicted to win the popular vote.

  1. Party Mandate: After the midterm elections, the incumbent party holds more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives than after the previous midterm elections.
  2. Contest: There is no serious contest for the incumbent party nomination.
  3. Incumbency: The incumbent party candidate is the sitting president.
  4. Third party: There is no significant third party or independent campaign.
  5. Short-term economy: The economy is not in recession during the election campaign.
  6. Long-term economy: Real per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth during the previous two terms.
  7. Policy change: The incumbent administration affects major changes in national policy.
  8. Social unrest: There is no sustained social unrest during the term.
  9. Scandal: The incumbent administration is untainted by major scandal.
  10. Foreign/military failure: The incumbent administration suffers no major failure in foreign or military affairs.
  11. Foreign/military success: The incumbent administration achieves a major success in foreign or military affairs.
  12. Incumbent (party) charisma: The incumbent party candidate is charismatic or a national hero.
  13. Challenger (party) charisma: The challenging party candidate is not charismatic or a national hero.

2020 United States presidential election

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Keys_to_the_White_House

On August 5 2020, Allan Lichtman predicted that Donald Trump will lose the 2020 United States presidential election to challenger Joe Biden based on seven of the thirteen keys of his prediction model turning false against the incumbency. In other words, keys.

(The Keys are statements that favor victory (in the popular vote count) for the incumbent party. When five or fewer statements are false, the incumbent party is predicted to win the popular vote; when six or more are false, the challenging party is predicted to win the popular vote. Each Key will be followed by True or False statements (referring to the 2020 Election, as predicted in August 2020, by Lichtman))

  1. Party Mandate: After the midterm elections, the incumbent party holds more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives than after the previous midterm elections. False.
  2. Contest: There is no serious contest for the incumbent party nomination. True.
  3. Incumbency: The incumbent party candidate is the sitting president. True.
  4. Third party: There is no significant third party or independent campaign. True.
  5. Short-term economy: The economy is not in recession during the election campaign. False.
  6. Long-term economy: Real per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth during the previous two terms. False.
  7. Policy change: The incumbent administration affects major changes in national policy. True.
  8. Social unrest: There is no sustained social unrest during the term. False.
  9. Scandal: The incumbent administration is untainted by major scandal. False.
  10. Foreign/military failure: The incumbent administration suffers no major failure in foreign or military affairs. True.
  11. Foreign/military success: The incumbent administration achieves a major success in foreign or military affairs. False.
  12. Incumbent (party) charisma: The incumbent party candidate is charismatic or a national hero. False.
  13. Challenger (party) charisma: The challenging party candidate is not charismatic or a national hero. True.

The 9 Things We Know About Kamala Harris’s Husband

Now that Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as his running mate, thus setting her up to potentially make history as the first woman to be elected the country’s vice president, it may be time to turn our attention to another potentially barrier-breaking event. What do we know about the person who could make his own history as the country’s first second gentleman?

Only two men have held that potential in the past: John Zaccaro (the husband of Geraldine Ferraro) in 1984 and Todd Palin (the husband of Sarah) in 2008. But neither, of course, ultimately got to embrace that title. Will the third time be the charm for Douglas Emhoff?

Here is all we know so far about Kamala Harris’s spouse.

1. He is a lawyer. Emhoff is a partner at the firm DLA Piper, where he works based out of Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. According to his official bio, Emhoff “is a highly experienced litigator and strategic advisor” who “represents large domestic and international corporations and some of today’s highest profile individuals and influencers in complex business, real estate, and intellectual property litigation disputes.”

2. His most famous client might have been the Taco Bell Chihuahua. As the Hollywood Reporter wrote in a 2019 profile of Emhoff, at the beginning of the 2000s, “‘Yo quiero Taco Bell’ was a familiar refrain thanks to a series of ads featuring the live-action pooch that was developed by [Emhoff’s] client TBWA.” But a Michigan company said that it had actually created the “Psycho Chihuahua” character for Taco Bell and sued for breach of contract. When it was forced to pay $42 million, Taco Bell  tried to pass on the bill to the ad agency, but Emhoff’s legal work successfully deflected that claim.

3. The couple met on a blind date. Both in their 40s, Emhoff, divorced, and Harris, single, met on a date arranged in 2013 by Harris’s best friend, Chrisette Hudlin, a public relations consultant. The date was set up by text, and then the two met for dinner the next night. In her memoir, The Truths We Hold, Harris has written how difficult it was as a public figure to have a normal dating life. (When she met Emhoff, she was the attorney general of California.) “I knew that if I brought a man with me to an event, people would immediately start to speculate about our relationship,” Harris wrote. “I also knew that single women in politics are viewed differently than single men. We don’t get the same latitude when it comes to our social lives.”

4. It was a whirlwind romance. The morning after their first date, Emhoff reportedly wrote Harris an email. “I’m too old to play games or hide the ball,” it said. “I really like you, and I want to see if we can make this work.” The two were married less than a year later in a civil ceremony held at the Santa Barbara courthouse on a Friday afternoon. Harris’s younger sister, Maya, officiated.

5. He was a single dad. When Harris met Emhoff, he was divorced with two young kids, sharing custody with his first wife, Kerstin. Harris has spoken frequently of being embraced by both her new stepchildren and Emhoff's former wife and the easy relationship of their blended family. According to a 2018 Vogue profile, son Cole graduated from Colorado College in May 2017 and then went to work as an assistant at William Morris Endeavor. Daughter Ella is a student at Parsons School of Design. At Wednesday’s campaign appearance with Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris spoke warmly of her stepchildren and the nickname they gave her. She said: “I’ve had a lot of titles over my career and certainly vice president will be great. But Momala will always be the one that means the most.”

6. His social media accounts are largely a tribute to his wife: Based on the frequency and content of his posts over the past year, Refinery29 wrote, Emhoff “frankly puts most other ‘Instagram husbands’ to shame. (His Instagram bio reads: ”Dad. @kamalaharris Hubby. Lawyer.”) Before Harris’s first presidential debate, Emhoff posted a picture of the two of them, with the caption:” Dear ⁦@KamalaHarris⁩: I love you, I believe in you, and I’m so proud of you. The whole country is going to see what I get to see everyday. You are amazing.” When he posts a selfie, it almost always includes Harris, even remotely, as when his Instagram account showed a picture of Emhoff with a TV in the background. On it was Harris being interviewed on CNN: “That moment when you walk by the tv in your office lobby and see your wife speaking to Jake Tapper on that tv...” (On Tuesday, he tweeted a photo of Harris watching the roll call, wearing a sweatshirt from Howard University, her alma mater.)

On Wednesday, Dr. Jill Biden tweeted out a selfie of her and Douglas Emhoff/Twitter

7. He’s quick on his feet. In June of last year, as Harris was on stage speaking at the MoveOn Big Ideas Forum, an animal-rights activist rushed the stage, snatching away the senator’s microphone and beginning to speak to the crowd. Harris was quickly ushered off, but, along with a handful of others, Emhoff sprang into action, jumping up onto the stage to help drag the protester away. (You can watch the video here.) Afterward, Emhoff tweeted a picture of him and Harris, both smiling (and him wearing a “Kamala Harris for the People” sweatshirt), writing, “Thx for all the kind notes. We are good. I love ⁦@KamalaHarris and would do anything for her.”

8. He found a soulmate on the 2020 campaign trail. Early in the presidential primary race, Emhoff bonded with Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg, and the two quickly became social media buddies. After a 2019 profile of Emhoff came out that may not have been entirely complimentary, Chasten posted a shout-out to his friend: “The irony of an article telling you to be yourself and in the same breath telling you to be someone else is *chefs kiss. deep sigh. eye roll.* political life for campaign spouses. Keep being you, @douglasemhoff.” (Emhoff responded by tweeting: “Dear @Chas10Buttigieg: I’m not crying, just have something in my eyes. Thx for the support. #spousessticktogether.”) In another post, which included a picture of the two on the campaign trail, Emhoff wrote, “Just spent some time chatting with my friend ⁦@Chas10Buttigieg⁩. Sometimes the only person you can talk to about going through this as a spouse, is someone going through this as a spouse!”

9. He’s Jewish! That Emhoff is Jewish seemed to both surprise and delight many of Harris’s supporters this week, some of whom took to social media to celebrate their own mixed marriages. Jewish husband was, for a time, a trending topic on Twitter, and there were dozens of congratulatory posts from fellow spouses. “Jewish husbands of more impressive women - this is our moment,” tweeted the journalist Ben Hartman,   “Big day for America’s hot Jewish male community,” wrote the New York contributor Eric Levitz. “Today, Handsome Hebrew boys all across this country know that no matter how strong our jawlines -- or cute our kippahs -- we too can grow up to become a major party’s nominee for Second Gentleman.” But this was not the first time that Emhoff’s religion had become a subject of some interest. “There’s a (six-pointed) star in the making who must be discussed,” The Forward wrote last July. “His name? Douglas C. Emhoff, esquire. His game? Loving and supporting California senator and 2020 hopeful Kamala Harris.” The article was headlined: “Kamala Harris’ Husband Doug Emhoff Is Our Hot Jewish Dad Crush.”
