Captive medic's bodycam shows firsthand horror of Mariupol

A celebrated Ukrainian medic strapped on a body camera to offer a firsthand look at Mariupol’s horror. Then Russian forces took her captive. Before her disappearance, Yuliia Paievska, better known as Taira, asked Associated Press journalists to safeguard the footage.
...
KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — A celebrated Ukrainian medic recorded her time in Mariupol on a data card no bigger than a thumbnail, smuggled out to the world in a tampon. Now she is in Russian hands, at a time when Mariupol itself is on the verge of falling.

Yuliia Paievska is known in Ukraine as Taira, a moniker from the nickname she chose in the World of Warcraft video game. Using a body camera, she recorded 256 gigabytes of her team’s frantic efforts over two weeks to bring people back from the brink of death. She got the harrowing clips to an Associated Press team, the last international journalists in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, one of whom fled with it in a tampon.

Russian soldiers captured Taira and her driver the next day, March 16, one of many forced disappearances in areas of Ukraine now held by Russia. Russia has portrayed Taira as working for the nationalist Azov Battalion, in line with Moscow’s narrative that it is attempting to “denazify” Ukraine. But the AP found no such evidence, and friends and colleagues said she had no links to Azov.

The military hospital where she led evacuations of the wounded is not affiliated with the battalion, whose members have spent weeks defending a sprawling steel plant in Mariupol. The footage Taira recorded itself testifies to the fact that she tried to save wounded Russian soldiers as well as Ukrainian civilians.

A clip recorded on March 10 shows two Russian soldiers taken roughly out of an ambulance by a Ukrainian soldier. One is in a wheelchair. The other is on his knees, hands bound behind his back, with an obvious leg injury. Their eyes are covered by winter hats, and they wear white armbands.

A Ukrainian soldier curses at one of them. “Calm down, calm down,” Taira tells him.

A woman asks her, “Are you going to treat the Russians?”

“They will not be as kind to us,” she replies. “But I couldn’t do otherwise. They are prisoners of war.”

Taira is now a prisoner of the Russians, one of hundreds of prominent Ukrainians who have been kidnapped or captured, including local officials, journalists, activists and human rights defenders.

The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has recorded 204 cases of enforced disappearances. It said some victims may have been tortured, and five were later found dead. The office of Ukraine’s ombudswoman said it had received reports of thousands of missing people by late April, 528 of whom had probably been captured.

The Russians also are targeting medics and hospitals even though the Geneva Conventions single out both military and civilian medics for protection “in all circumstance.” The World Health Organization has verified more than 100 attacks on health care since the war began, a number likely to rise.

More recently, Russian soldiers pulled a woman off a convoy from Mariupol on May 8, accused her of being a military medic and forced her to choose between letting her 4-year-old daughter accompany her to an unknown fate or continuing on to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The mother and child ended up separated, and the little girl made it to the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, U.N. officials said.

“This is not about saving one particular woman,” said Oleksandra Chudna, who volunteered as a medic with Taira in 2014. “Taira will represent those medics and women who went to the front.

Taira’s situation takes on a new significance as the last defenders in Mariupol are evacuated into Russian territories, in what Russia calls a mass surrender and Ukraine calls a mission accomplished. Russia says more than 1,700 Ukrainian fighters have surrendered this week in Mariupol, bringing new attention to the treatment of prisoners. Ukraine has expressed hope that the fighters can be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war, but a Russian official has said without evidence that they should be not exchanged but put on trial.

Ukraine’s government has said it tried to add Taira’s name to a prisoner exchange weeks ago. However, Russia denies holding her, despite her appearance on television networks in the separatist Donetsk region of Ukraine and on the Russian NTV network, handcuffed and with her face bruised. The Ukrainian government declined to speak about the case when asked by the AP.

Taira, 53, is known in Ukraine as a star athlete and the person who trained the country’s volunteer medic force. What comes across in her video and in descriptions from her friends is a big, exuberant personality with a telegenic presence, the kind of person to revel in swimming with dolphins.

The video is an intimate record from Feb. 6 to March 10 of a city under siege that has now become a worldwide symbol of the Russian invasion and Ukrainian resistance. In it, Taira is a whirlwind of energy and grief, recording the death of a child and the treatment of wounded soldiers from both sides.

On Feb. 24, the first day of the war, Taira chronicled efforts to bandage a Ukrainian soldier’s open head wound.

Two days later, she ordered colleagues to wrap an injured Russian soldier in a blanket. “Cover him because he is shaking,” she says in the video. She calls the young man “Sunshine” — a favorite nickname for the many soldiers who passed through her hands — and asks why he came to Ukraine.

“You’re taking care of me,” he tells her, almost in wonder. Her response: “We treat everyone equally.”

Later that night, two children — a brother and sister — arrive gravely wounded from a shootout at a checkpoint. Their parents are dead. By the end of the night, despite Taira’s entreaties to “stay with me, little one,” so is the little boy.

Taira turns away from his lifeless body and cries. “I hate (this),” she says. She closes his eyes.

Talking to someone in the dark outside as she smokes, she says, “The boy is gone. The boy has died. They are still giving CPR to the girl. Maybe she will survive.”

At one point, she stares into a bathroom mirror, a shock of blond hair falling over her forehead in stark contrast to the shaved sides of her head. She cuts the camera.

Throughout the video, she complains about chronic pain from back and hip injuries that left her partially disabled. She embraces doctors. She cracks jokes to cheer up discouraged ambulance drivers and patients alike. And always, she wears a stuffed animal attached to her vest to hand to any children she might treat.

With a husband and teenage daughter, she knew what war can do to a family. At one point, an injured Ukrainian soldier asks her to call his mother. She tells him he’ll be able to call her himself, “so don’t make her nervous.”

On March 15, a police officer handed over the small data card to a team of Associated Press journalists who had been documenting atrocities in Mariupol, including a Russian airstrike on a maternity hospital. The office contacted Taira on a walkie-talkie, and she asked the journalists to take the card safely out of the city. The card was hidden inside a tampon, and the team passed through 15 Russian checkpoints before reaching Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The next day, Taira disappeared with her driver Serhiy. On the same day, a Russian airstrike shattered the Mariupol theater and killed close to 600 people.

A video aired during a March 21 Russian news broadcast announced her capture, accusing her of trying to flee the city in disguise. Taira looks groggy and haggard as she reads a statement positioned below the camera, calling for an end to the fighting. As she talks, a voiceover derides her colleagues as Nazis, using language echoed this week by Russia as it described the fighters from Mariupol.

The broadcast was the last time she was seen.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian governments have publicized interviews with prisoners of war, despite international humanitarian law that describes the practice as inhumane and degrading treatment.

Taira’s husband, Vadim Puzanov, said he has received little news about his wife since her disappearance. Choosing his words carefully, he described a constant worry as well as outrage at how she has been portrayed by Russia.

“Accusing a volunteer medic of all mortal sins, including organ trafficking, is already outrageous propaganda — I don’t even know who it’s for,” he said.

Raed Saleh, the head of Syria’s White Helmets, compared Taira’s situation to what volunteers with his group faced and continue to face in Syria. He said his group also has been accused of organ trafficking and dealing with terrorist groups.

“Tomorrow, they may ask her to make statements and pressure her to say things,” Saleh said.

Taira has outsize importance in Ukraine because of her reputation. She taught aikido martial arts and worked as a medic as a sideline.

She took on her name in 2013, when she joined first aid volunteers at the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine that drove out a Russia-backed government. In 2014, Russia seized the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

Taira went to the eastern Donbas region, where Moscow-backed separatists fought Ukrainian forces. There, she taught tactical medicine and started a group of medics called Taira’s Angels. She also worked as a liaison between the military and civilians in front-line towns where few doctors and hospitals dared operate. In 2019, she left for the Mariupol region, and her medical unit was based there.

Taira was a member of the Ukraine Invictus Games for military veterans, where she was set to compete in archery and swimming. Invictus said she was a military medic from 2018 to 2020 but had since been demobilized.

She received the body camera in 2021 to film for a Netflix documentary series on inspirational figures being produced by Britain’s Prince Harry, who founded the Invictus Games. But when Russian forces invaded, she used it to shoot scenes of injured civilians and soldiers instead.

That footage is now especially poignant, with Mariupol on the brink. In one of the last videos Taira shot, she is seated next to the driver who would disappear with her. It is March 9.

“Two weeks of war. Besieged Mariupol,” she says quietly. Then she curses at no one in particular, and the screen goes dark.

Russia refuses to allow grain shipments from Ukraine, ignores pleas to end Black Sea blockade.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya told the UN Security Council Western sanctions against Russia and other factors are to blame for the rise in food prices, not Russia’s war.
...

Clearly, freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and Azov Sea are critical elements of any post-war peace settlement. It is equally clear that the world must not wait until the war is over before addressing the issue of unblocking Ukraine’s ports.

Ukraine cannot end the blockade simply by targeting Russia’s remaining warships and hoping for more successes similar to the sinking of The Moskva. Even without the power of the Black Sea Fleet, Russia could still enforce a blockade of Ukraine’s southern ports by threatening to target merchant shipping with aviation and missiles. Without a firm solution, international insurers will simply refuse to cover the risk of sailing to or from Ukrainian ports.

The only viable solution at this time is the creation of a protected maritime zone enforced by the international community. There are a variety of expert opinions on how this might best be achieved, with many relying on NATO capabilities. One of the most frequently cited options would involve the establishment of a humanitarian navigation corridor patrolled by NATO ships and aircraft to ensure the safety of commercial shipping.

If it proved too difficult to reach a consensus within NATO for such an initiative, a coalition of participating countries could be created for the purpose. With global food security at stake and millions of lives at risk, it would theoretically be possible to justify such a move while deflecting accusations of direct intervention in the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Of course, the first question regarding any protected maritime zones would be the rules of engagement for both ships and aircraft. If they came under Russian attack, would they engage in direct combat?

This would essentially be a replay of the earlier debate regarding a No-Fly Zone over Ukraine which ended in wholesale rejection of the idea. Notably, much has changed since a No-Fly Zone was ruled out in March. After almost three months of heavy losses and military humiliations in Ukraine, the Kremlin currently has little interest in provoking a direct confrontation with NATO.

Russia’s reputation as a military superpower has already been greatly diminished by events in Ukraine. It is time for NATO leaders to recognize that Putin is a bully who feeds off their caution. In reality, he has no stomach for a direct confrontation which Russia can ill afford.

Belarus banned Orwell's dystopia “1984”

[Image: snjali-s-prodazhi-v-belarusi-zapretili-a...60x404.jpg]

Bookstores in Belarus have received an order to withdraw from sale the dystopian novel “1984” by British writer George Orwell. The Belarusian edition “Nasha Niva” writes about this with reference to a copy of the order
“Remove from sale all versions of Orwell D. 1984″. The implementation will be announced no later than May 19,” the order says.
In the state network “Belkniga” Orwell's novel was on the 4th place in the list of bestsellers.
“A rare case for a book that was first published many decades ago. And a reflection of how people perceive the processes taking place in the country,” the publication reacted to the ban.

[Image: snjali-s-prodazhi-v-belarusi-zapretili-a...b8f868.jpg]

The media did not specify who exactly issued this order. “Nasha Niva” added that on May 16, the main department for combating organized crime and corruption detained the publisher Andrei Yanushkevich after a search in the “Knigauka” bookstore.

200 books were confiscated from Yanushkevich. The special services focused on the shelves with the book “1984”.

The ban on the novel “1984” – do stores sell the book

Journalists from Zerkalo.io called bookstore chains Belkniga, Oz.by and Akademkniga. Belkniga said that they hadn't sold Orwell's books for a long time, and there are no plans to receive them. The novel is sold in the Oz.by bookstore chain, where they have not heard anything about the order to withdraw books from sale.
Some editions of “1984” have disappeared from the online store OZ.by after the publication of the ban.

The book “1984” is on sale in “Akademkniga” and will be there until the end of the week. Orwell is also sold in the Svetoch store of the Belkniga chain, and 1984 is presented in various editions. They also do not know about the requirements to remove the book from the shelves.

“We have not received such instructions. But if there is an order to shoot, it happens suddenly and quite quickly,” the store employee shared.

The Ministry of Information of Belarus did not comment on the ban on the sale of the novel “1984”.

Orwell's dystopia “1984” – what is the book about

George Orwell in his novel “1984” describes a totalitarian society whose inhabitants are deprived of civil rights and individuality. The book describes the personality cult of Big Brother. The quotes “War is peace”, “Freedom is slavery” and “Big Brother is watching you” became aphorisms.

In the Soviet Union and other totalitarian states of Eastern Europe, the book was forbidden to be sold until 1987. The first time the novel was translated into Belarusian by Sergei Shupa in 1992, when the first edition was published. In 2020, the novel was republished by Yanushkevich's publishing house, and an additional edition of the work was released in 2021.
In order to censor and fight fakes, Lukashenka suggested that the leaders of the countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization take China as an example and restrict access to the Internet.

https://twitter.com/GicAriana/status/152...7583651840

https://twitter.com/i/status/1527189800700215297

https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi%E1%BB%8...%E1%BB%A9c

- có hiệp ước „không tấn công” nhưng lại bất ngờ đánh lén Ba Lan ngày 17-09-1939, bắt 20.000 sỹ quan đem giết ở Katyn.
https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%E1%BA%A...%A1t_Katyn

Shy

Chinese Hackers Tried to Steal Russian Defense Data, Report Says

The campaign detailed by a cybersecurity firm highlights Beijing’s increasingly sophisticated tactics to spy on an array of targets, including countries it considers friends.

TEL AVIV — The emails landed on March 23 in the inboxes of scientists and engineers at several of Russia’s military research and development institutes, purportedly sent by Russia’s Ministry of Health. They carried a subject line that offered seemingly tantalizing information about a “list of persons under U.S. sanctions for invading Ukraine.”

But the emails were actually sent by state-sponsored hackers in China seeking to entice their Russian targets to download and open a document with malware, according to a new report to be released Thursday by the Israeli-American cybersecurity firm Check Point.

The report provides new evidence of Chinese efforts to spy on Russia, pointing to the complexity of the relations between two countries that have drawn closer in solidarity against the United States. It also underscores the sprawling, and increasingly sophisticated, tactics China’s cyberspies have used to collect information on an ever-expanding array of targets, including countries it considers friends, like Russia.

Despite the growing global outrage over Russia’s war in Ukraine, China has refused to criticize Moscow and has echoed Russian propaganda to depict the United States and NATO as aggressors in the conflict. But Check Point’s research showed that despite the countries’ deepening ties, China appeared to view Russia as a legitimate target for the theft of sensitive military technological information.

The Chinese campaign targeted Russian institutes that research airborne satellite communications, radar and electronic warfare, Check Point said in its report. The institutes belong to Rostec Corporation, the Russian military conglomerate that is one of the largest and most powerful entities in Russia’s defense establishment.

The Chinese espionage operation began as early as July 2021, before Russia invaded Ukraine, the Check Point report said. The March emails revealed that China’s hackers had quickly exploited narratives about the war in Ukraine for their purposes.

“This is a very sophisticated attack,” said Itay Cohen, the head of cyber research at Check Point, adding that it demonstrated capabilities “usually reserved for state-backed intelligence services.” The hackers used methods and codes similar to those used in previous attacks attributed to hacking groups affiliated with the Chinese state, he said.

For example, by referring to the American sanctions on Russian officials over the war in Ukraine, the attacks used “smart social engineering” that exploited a sensitive topic to try to induce their targets, including skilled defense officials, to open the email, Mr. Cohen said. The hackers also used advanced tactics that better concealed their intrusions in the computers that were attacked, Mr. Cohen said.

Under China’s authoritarian leader, Xi Jinping, Beijing has refined its approach to cyberspying, transforming over the past decade into a far more sophisticated actor. China’s premier spy agency, borrowing a page from Russia, has recruited beyond its ranks, pulling from the country’s growing pool of tech workers. The strategy has made its attacks more scattershot and unpredictable, but analysts say it has also helped strengthen the country’s efforts, enabling spies to run stealthy attacks that target intellectual property as well as political and military intelligence around the world.

Mr. Xi has made improving China’s scientific and technical capabilities a priority in the coming years, with ambitions of becoming a global leader in high-tech fields such as robotics, medical equipment and aviation. The campaign targeting Russian defense research institutes “might serve as more evidence of the use of espionage in a systematic and long-term effort to achieve Chinese strategic objectives in technological superiority and military power,” Check Point’s report said.

More recently, hackers based in China, like their counterparts elsewhere, have taken advantage of the war in Ukraine to break into the computer systems of organizations across Europe. Hackers have preyed upon heightened anxiety about the invasion, tricking their victims into downloading documents that falsely claim to contain information about the war or pose as aid organizations raising money for charity.

Many of the attacks originating from China appear to be focused on gathering information and intellectual property, rather than on causing chaos or disruption that could sway the conflict in favor of Ukraine or Russia, security researchers said.

In late March, Chinese hackers began going after Ukrainian organizations, according to security researchers and an announcement from Ukraine’s cybersecurity agency. A hacking team known as Scarab sent a document to Ukrainian organizations that offered instructions on how to film evidence of Russian war crimes but also contained malware that could extract information from infected computer systems, researchers at the security firm SentinelOne said.

Also in March, another hacking team affiliated with China, which security researchers have called Mustang Panda, created documents that purported to be European Union reports on conditions at the borders of Ukraine and Belarus, and emailed them to potential targets in Europe. But the documents contained malware, and victims who were tricked into opening them inadvertently allowed the hackers to infiltrate their networks, researchers at Google and the security firm Cisco Talos said.

The Mustang Panda hacking group had previously attacked organizations in India, Taiwan and Myanmar, but when the war started, it turned its focus to the European Union and Russia. In March, the hackers also pursued agencies in Russia, emailing them a document that appeared to contain information about the placement of border guards in Russia, Cisco Talos researchers said.

“One thing remains consistent across all these campaigns — Mustang Panda is clearly looking to conduct espionage campaigns,” Cisco Talos researchers said in a report this month about that group’s activity.

In this latest report on Chinese hacking efforts, the firm Check Point said it was calling the group behind the recently identified campaign Twisted Panda “to reflect the sophistication of the tools observed and the attribution to China.”

The Rostec institutes that have been attacked are mainly engaged in the development of airborne radar, and in the development of devices that can, among other things, disrupt the radar and identification systems used by an enemy.

Rostec Corporation was founded by President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in 2007 and has become one of the nation’s largest military corporations, controlling hundreds of research and manufacturing facilities for high-end defense technology, electronic warfare tools and aircraft engines.

Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, Rostec was blacklisted by the United States and its chief executive, Sergey Chemezov, was sanctioned by the European Union. Immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukraine this year, the United States imposed additional sanctions on companies and entities associated with Rostec.
