Flood saves Ukrainian village from Russian occupation

The intentional flooding of a small village north of Kyiv that created a quagmire and submerged cellars and fields, but prevented a Russian attack on the capital, was worth all the sacrifice, residents said.
Ukrainian forces opened a dam early in the war in Demydiv, causing the Irpin River to flood the village and thousands of acres around. The move has since been credited with stopping Russian soldiers and tanks from breaking through Ukraine's lines.

"Of course, it was good," said Volodymyr Artemchuk, a 60-year-old resident of Demydiv.
"What would have happened if they (Russian forces) .... were able to cross the little river and then went onto Kyiv?"
More than a third of some fields have been flooded, said Oleksandr Rybalko, 39.
Some two months later, people in the village were still dealing with the aftermath of the flooding, using inflatable boats to move around and planting whatever dry swaths of lands were left with flowers and vegetables.

Children were left with wetlands to use as playgrounds.
The Russian invasion, now in its third month, has claimed thousands of civilian lives, sent millions of Ukrainians fleeing and reduced cities to rubble.
Moscow calls its actions a "special military operation" to disarm Ukraine and protect it from fascists. Ukraine and the West say the fascist allegation is baseless and that the war is an unprovoked act of aggression.

Over the weekend, Russia pummelled positions in the east of Ukraine on Sunday, seeking to encircle Ukrainian forces in the battle for Donbas.

Sweden to bid for NATO membership, seeks to overcome Turkey's objections

STOCKHOLM, May 16 (Reuters) - Sweden's government has formally decided to apply for NATO membership, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Monday, setting it on the road toward ending military non-alignment that lasted throughout the Cold War.

Sweden's governing Social Democrats dropped their 73-year opposition to joining NATO on Sunday and are hoping for a quick accession, following Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. read more

"We are leaving one era behind us and entering a new one," Andersson told a news conference. She said the application could be handed in on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and would be synchronised with Finland, which has also confirmed it would apply to join the military alliance.

"NATO will strengthen Sweden, Sweden will strengthen NATO," she said.

The decision to abandon the military non-alignment that has been a central tenet of Swedish national identity for two centuries marks a sea change in public perception in the Nordic region following Russia's attack on its neighbour.

However, she said Sweden did not want permanent NATO military bases or nuclear weapons on its territory if its membership was approved.

There is broad backing in parliament for an application, though the government does not need its approval to go ahead. Andersson said she hoped for a quick accession process but that it could take up to a year to get approval from the parliaments of the 30 NATO member states. Andersson warned that Sweden would be particularly vulnerable during that period.

General Micael Byden, Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, told a news conference the decision to apply was right from a military strategic perspective and that defending Sweden, unilaterally or in co-operation with other states, would become easier with Sweden a member.

"I know, based on my conversations and the relations that I have with my counterparts, that Sweden is welcome in NATO. But we are not only welcome - I also know that Sweden as a member makes NATO stronger," Byden said.

Sweden has received assurances of support from the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany among others but not any legally binding guarantees of military aid.

In a joint statement on Monday, Nordic neighbours Denmark, Norway and Iceland also pledged support.

One obstacle has already emerged even before the applications have landed at NATO's Brussels headquarters.

Turkey surprised its NATO allies by saying it would not view applications by Finland and Sweden positively, mainly citing their history of hosting members of Kurdish militant groups.

President Tayyip Erdogan called the Scandinavian countries "guesthouses for terrorist organisations". read more

Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said on Monday that Sweden would start diplomatic discussions with Turkey to try to overcome Ankara's objections to its plan to join NATO.

"We will send a group of diplomats to hold discussions and have a dialogue with Turkey so we can see how this can be resolved and what this is really about," Hultqvist told public service broadcaster SVT.

Turkey has said it wanted the Nordic countries to halt support for Kurdish militants on their territory, and to lift bans on sales of some weapons to Turkey.

Turkish state media said separately that Sweden and Finland had rejected requests for the repatriation of 33 people that Turkey alleges have links to groups it deems terrorists. read more

Sweden's Foreign Ministry did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

NATO and the United States said they were confident Turkey would not hold up membership of Finland and Sweden.

Diplomats said Erdogan would be under pressure to yield as Finland and Sweden would greatly strengthen NATO in the Baltic Sea.

Mechanics in Ukraine are repairing Russian tanks that were damaged and captured in battle so they can be used by Ukrainian forces

Mechanics in Ukraine are aiding the war effort by repairing Russian tanks so they can return to the battlefield — this time to support Ukrainian forces.

A group of six mechanics was working out of a warehouse in Kharkiv, a city in eastern Ukraine that has seen some of the worst bombardment since Russia invaded on February 24, The New York Times reported Friday.

Inside the warehouse was damaged Russian tanks, weapons, and some Ukrainian vehicles, all being fixed or refurbished for use by Ukrainian forces. The outlet reported work being done included searching through Russian equipment for information and salvaging parts from broken or burnt out tanks.

"This is where we bring the Russian tanks we pulled from the bogs, fix them up, and use them against the Russians," a mechanic who did not want to be named told The Times.

Ukraine on Saturday said Russian troops were withdrawing from Kharkiv, the country's second-largest city, after weeks of shelling. Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said the country was preparing for a new, long-term phase of the war.

Reports of civilians aiding in the war effort began before the full-scale invasion was officially launched. In January, volunteer civilians were already training to fight, with active duty military and reservists teaching them skills such as how to hold a weapon and execute combat tactics.

Christopher Steele, the spy behind the discredited 'pee tape' Trump dossier, says sources tell him Putin is seriously ill

Mia Jankowicz
Mon, May 16, 2022, 4:50 AM

  • The former British spy Christopher Steele told Sky News that his sources say Putin is very ill.
  • "It's part of the equation" in Putin's decision-making in Ukraine, Steele said.
  • Steele compiled the infamous Trump-Russia dossier, much of which has been discredited.

The former British spy who wrote an infamous dossier about Donald Trump's dealings in Russia told Sky News on Sunday that sources had told him that Russian President Vladimir Putin is seriously ill.
Christopher Steele, who led MI6's Russia desk and worked as a spy in Moscow for years, told Sky News: "Certainly, from what we're hearing from sources in Russia and elsewhere, is that Putin is, in fact, quite seriously ill."
Claims about the 69-year-old leader's health have circulated for months. On Saturday, Ukraine's head of military intelligence, Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, told Sky that Putin is in a "very bad psychological and physical condition and he is very sick."
Budanov went on to suggest that the purported illness had incited plans within Russia for a coup.
In his interview with Sky, Steele suggested that Putin's health is "an element" of his decision-making in Ukraine.
"It's not clear exactly what this illness is — whether it's incurable or terminal, or whatever," he said. "But certainly, I think it's part of the equation."
On Thursday, New Lines Magazine said it had obtained a recording of a Russian oligarch saying Putin is "very ill with blood cancer." New Lines said it verified the oligarch's identity but was unable to authenticate the claims in the recording.
It is all but impossible to confirm rumors about Putin's health, which describe a panoply of ailments. The Russian investigative news outlet Proekt said in early April that the leader had received dozens of visits from a thyroid-cancer specialist.
In early May, a former KGB agent, Boris Karpichkov, told The Sun, without citing sources, that "there is a serious concern that Putin is suffering from" ailments including dementia and Parkinson's disease.
The Sun's report followed weeks of tabloid speculation over the leader's appearance, including images of him appearing to steady himself while seated in a meeting with his defense minister.

Steele is the author of an intelligence dossier that made multiple claims about Trump, including that there exists a so-called pee tape of obscene material involving Trump in Russia before his political career.
No evidence of the tape has been found, and other aspects of the dossier's credibility have been questioned, CNN reported.
Steele worked under diplomatic cover as a spy in Moscow for three years in the '90s, and he was the chief of MI6's Russia desk from 2006 to 2009.

Inside Putin’s cancer checkups and deer antler blood baths: report

Inside Putin’s cancer checkups and deer antler blood baths: report
Oh, deer.

Russian despot Vladimir Putin has had 35 secret meetings with a cancer doctor — and been bathing in the blood of deer antlers, a report said Friday.

The investigative report by the Russian outlet The Project tracked the medical care that the 69-year-old Putin has received since becoming president of Russia a decade ago — and raises serious questions about his health.

“As he aged, concerns about health and longevity have so consumed the president that he has even shown an interest in unconventional medicine, despite many members of his family, including previously unknown ones, being physicians,” the report says.

For example, Putin has reportedly taken to bathing in the blood of deer antlers hacksawed off from the animals in the spring when the horns are “soft and full of blood,” the report said. These so-called “antler baths” are a natural medicine practice in the Altai region of Russia, which borders Khazakstan and Mongolia. Putin has reportedly traveled there multiple times for an antler bath.

He even seems to have started a trend.
“The … elites quickly spotted Putin’s new hobby,” The Project said. “Antlers and other ways to extend one’s youth quickly became popular among officials.”

The report documents alleged evidence of serious issues involving Putin, too.

Cross-referencing public records with Putin’s known disappearances from public life and his trips to his dacha, or getaway home, in Sochi, the report paints a picture of a leader being treated for chronic ailments.
“The Project can say with certainty that on at least two occasions, Putin has had either surgery or a very serious procedure, most likely in the area of his back,” the report said.

One of Putin’s most frequent visitors is an oncologist named Evgeny Selivanov. Selivanov has visited the Russian leader 35 times over four years, The Project said.

The report suggests the Russian president secretly underwent an additional surgery last autumn and adds that he “did not appear in public for the entire month of September.

“In medical circles, it is believed that the president was undergoing a complicated procedure related to some kind of thyroid disease during this period,” the report states.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s official spokesman, has reportedly denied any suggestions that Putin has cancer.
