Ukraine in fierce battle to retake Snake Island

Ukrainian forces are engaged in a fierce battle to retake Snake Island amid fears that Russia could “dominate” part of the Black Sea if it is able to move in its missile systems, according to British intelligence.

Hours after Russia claimed to have repelled Ukrainian efforts to retake the island, the British Ministry of Defence said that fighting continued, with Ukrainian forces managing to disrupt Moscow’s attempts to expand its influence.

The sinking last month of Russia’s flagship Moskva missile cruiser left Russia’s resupply vessels with “minimum protection” against Ukraine’s drones, the MoD said in an update on Twitter.

“Ukraine has successfully struck Russian air defences and resupply vessels with Bayraktar drones,” it added.

Ukraine claimed this week to have struck a Serna-class landing craft and two Raptor-class patrol boats with Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones. They also hit two Tor surface-to-air missile systems, according to the Ukrainian news outlet Pravda.

The MoD said that Russia was “repeatedly trying to reinforce its exposed garrison located there”.

However, it added that Russia’s efforts to increase its forces on Zmiinyi Island, also known as Snake Island, offered Ukraine “more opportunities” to engage Russian troops and destroy supplies and weapons.

Radar satellite imagery pointed to two boats next to the island this morning. HI Sutton, a defence analyst, said they were “likely” to be Russian navy and, based on their size, were possibly landing craft.

He said Russia appeared “determined to hold the tiny piece of strategic real-estate”, noting that on Monday another landing craft was observed next to the island and was “likely” to be attempting to deliver another SA-15 Tor air defence system.

Ukrainian troops arrive in Germany for howitzer training

Around 60 Ukrainian soldiers have arrived in western Germany to begin training on the howitzer 2000 artillery system. The German government has pledged to send seven of the self-propelled weapons.

Over the next 40 days, the troops will train with the Panzerhaubitze 2000 artillery system at a training site in western Germany

Ukrainian soldiers began howitzer training at a German artillery school on Wednesday, where they will spend the next weeks learning how to use the heavy weapons before they are sent to Ukraine, German media reported.

The move comes amid a major policy turnaround by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government, which faced criticism from Kyiv and other allies for not sending heavy weapons to Ukraine.

What do we know about the training?

The service members landed on Tuesday evening after being flown out from Poland, the dpa news agency reported, citing government sources.
Over 60 Ukrainian soldiers are taking part in the training, along with technical experts and translators, according to dpa.

Training is set to last around 40 days and will take place at the German military's artillery school in Idar-Oberstein in the western German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, local public broadcaster Saarländischer Rundfunk reported.

The German-built self-propelled Howitzer 2000 models are operated by five soldiers each.

What is the Howitzer 2000?

The model Ukrainian troops will be training on is an armored self-propelled 155-mm caliber artillery gun, whose 60 rounds can be fired at a rate of three rounds every 10 seconds.

Targets can be destroyed at a distance of 30 to 56 kilometers (19 to 35 miles), depending on the ammunition. The German firms Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall supplied the first howitzers to the Bundeswehr in 1998 and continue to produce more advanced versions.

The howitzer can travel at speeds of up to 60 km/h, has a road-range of about 420 kilometers, and can ford waters up to a depth of about 1.5 meters. It is designed to follow motorized formations and provide them with fire support.

According to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, the Bundeswehr has about 100 howitzers in its inventory, of which about 40 are operational.

Chancellor Scholz has now promised Ukraine seven howitzers, but they would first have to be made operational, which is expected to take until the summer.

The German government has also pledged to send several anti-aircraft "Gepard" flak tanks to Ukraine, although these must also be made operational again.

Russia threatens to retaliate as Finland seeks NATO membership 'without delay'

HELSINKI/KHARKIV, Ukraine, May 12 (Reuters) - Finland said on Thursday it would apply to join NATO "without delay", with Sweden expected to follow, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine looked set to bring about the very expansion of the Western military alliance that Vladimir Putin aimed to prevent.

The decision by the two Nordic countries to abandon the neutrality they maintained throughout the Cold War would be one of the biggest shifts in European security in decades. Moscow called Finland's announcement a direct threat to Russia, and threatened retaliation, including unspecified "military-technical" measures.

It came even as Russia's war in Ukraine was suffering another big setback, with Ukrainian forces driving Russian troops out of the region around the second largest city Kharkiv, the fastest Ukrainian advance since forcing Russia to withdraw from the capital and northeast more than a month ago.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the Finns would be "warmly welcomed" and promised a "smooth and swift" accession process.

Finland and Sweden are the two biggest EU countries yet to join NATO. Finland's 1,300-km (800-mile) border will more than double the length of the frontier between the U.S.-led alliance and Russia, putting NATO guards a few hours' drive from the northern outskirts of St Petersburg.

"Finland must apply for NATO membership without delay," President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in a joint statement, hoping steps to take the decision would "be taken rapidly within the next few days".

Asked whether Finland's accession posed a direct threat to Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Definitely. NATO expansion does not make our continent more stable and secure.

"This cannot fail to arouse our regret, and is a reason for corresponding symmetrical responses on our side," Peskov added.

Russia's foreign ministry said Moscow would be forced to take "retaliatory steps, both of a military-technical and other nature", giving no further details. Russian officials have spoken in the past about potential measures including stationing nuclear-armed missiles on the Baltic Sea.

'LOOK AT THE MIRROR'

Putin, Russia's president, cited NATO's potential expansion as one of the main reasons he launched a "special military operation" in Ukraine in February.

NATO describes itself as a defensive alliance, built around a treaty declaring that an attack on one member is an attack on all, granting U.S. allies the protection of Washington's superpower might including its nuclear arsenal.

Moscow regards that as a threat to its security. But Putin's decision to invade Ukraine has changed Nordic public opinion, with political parties that had long backed neutrality now embracing the view that Russia is a menace.

Finland in particular has centuries of uneasy history in Russia's shadow. Ruled by the Russian empire from 1809-1917, it fought off Soviet invasions on the eve of World War Two, and accepted some Soviet influence as the price of avoiding taking sides in the Cold War. Since it and Sweden joined the EU in 1995, they have aligned more firmly with the West. read more

UKRAINIAN COUNTER-ATTACK

Thursday also saw an intensification of disputes over Russian supplies of energy to Europe - still Moscow's biggest source of funds and Europe's biggest source of heat and power, despite the war and sanctions.

In the latest developments, Moscow said it would halt gas flows to Germany through the main pipeline over Poland, while Kyiv said it would not reopen a pipeline route it shut this week unless it regains control of areas from pro-Russian fighters. Prices for gas in Europe surged. read more

In Geneva, the U.N. Human Rights Council was due to decide on Thursday whether to launch an investigation into possible war crimes by Russian troops during their occupation of the area near Kyiv, before they were driven out at the end of March.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said there were many examples of possible war crimes, including unlawful killings and summary executions, with 1,000 bodies recovered so far near Kyiv. read more

Moscow denies targeting civilians. Its ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said the West was "organising another political rout to demonize Russia".

On the front lines, Ukraine has mounted a bold counter-offensive in recent days, ousting Russian forces from villages north and east of Kharkiv they had held since the beginning of the invasion.

Reuters journalists have confirmed that Ukraine is now in control of territory stretching to the banks of the Siverskiy Donets River, around 40 km (25 miles) east of Kharkiv. To the north, the Ukrainians have been pushing towards the Russian border. In the latest advance, they announced on Wednesday the recapture of the village of Pytomnyk, halfway to the frontier.

"The withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kharkiv Oblast (region) is a tacit recognition of Russia’s inability to capture key Ukrainian cities where they expected limited resistance from the population," Britain's defence ministry said in an update.

Ukraine's general staff said the Russians were regrouping to prevent further Ukrainian advances near Kharkiv.
Russia's retreat has begun to make it possible for some residents to return to recaptured villages around Kharkiv. But areas remain unsafe - littered with mines and booby traps, and still within Russian shelling range.

Lithuania becomes first to designate Russia as terrorist state

Lithuania's parliament on Tuesday designated Russia as a terrorist country and recognized its actions in Ukraine as genocide.

Why it matters: In doing so, Lithuania has become the first country in the world to designate Russia as a sponsor and executor of terrorism, Ukraine's Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security tweeted.

State of play: Lithuania's unicameral parliament adopted the two-pronged resolution unanimously, per a statement posted to its Facebook page.

"The war against Ukraine by the Russian Federation is a genocide of the Ukrainian nation carried out by Russia. The Russian Federation is a country that supports and executes terrorism," the statement read.
What they're saying: The resolution stated that Russian forces have committed war crimes in Ukrainian cities such as Bucha, Irpin, Mariupol, Borodyanka and Hostomel, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) reported.

The parliament "recognizes the full-scale armed aggression – war – against Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation and its political and military leadership ... as genocide against the Ukrainian people," it added.
The resolution also stated that Russia, "whose military forces deliberately and systematically target civilian targets, is a state that supports and perpetrates terrorism."
The big picture: Last week, Ukraine's Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova told the U.S. Helsinki Commission that Russia had committed nearly 10,000 war crimes over the course of the war.

Russian forces have deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure such as hospitals.

Last month, Sima Bahous, the United Nations executive director for women, told the UN Security Council that reports of human trafficking, rape and other sexual violence in Ukraine were increasing.

President Biden said last month that Russia was committing genocide in Ukraine.
