Russia’s top warship explodes, on fire in the Black Sea

Russia’s Moskva flagship missile cruiser incurred heavy damage from an explosion and a “fire” on board late Wednesday and Ukrainian officials are saying they fired missiles at the Russian cruiser.

Odesa Regional Military Administration head Maksym Marchenko said on Telegram that Moskva was hit. “Neptune missiles guarding the Black Sea caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” he said, according to a translation. Neptune missiles are anti-ship cruise missiles produced in Ukraine.

An unconfirmed video circulating social media claims to show a ship burning in the Black Sea. It’s unclear if the video actually shows the Mosvka as the footage could not be authenticated at this time.

The Russian defense ministry described the incident as a “fire” that broke out and exploded munitions on board, though it didn’t describe the source of the fire. The ship was evacuated and the incident is being investigated.

“A fire onboard the Mosvka missile cruiser caused a blast of the broadside munitions. The ship received serious damage. The crew was evacuated,” the ministry statement said, as reported by Russian state-run news agency TASS.

Moskva is the flagship vessel of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. It has been in service since 1983 and carries Vulkan missile launchers.

Some reports have said Moskva was involved in the famous Snake Island standoff in late February with 13 Ukrainian defenders who refused to surrender to a Russian warship, instead telling the warship crew “Go f–k yourself.” However, the standoff was soon attributed to the Russian warship Vasily Bykov, which was destroyed by a Ukrainian attack in early March.

Ukrainian adviser in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Anton Gerashchenko, said on Telegram that “something exploded” and “the cruiser ‘Moskva’ almost sank to the bottom.”

Ukrainian presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said during a YouTube broadcast that “a surprise happened with the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet,” referring to the Mosvka, according to AFP.

“It burns strongly. Right now. And with this stormy sea, it is unknown whether they will be able to receive help. There are 510 crew members,” he added.

Russian Tech Industry Faces ‘Brain Drain’ as Workers Flee

Since their country invaded Ukraine, Russian tech workers have left by the thousands. They appear intent on rebuilding their lives and businesses in other countries.

In early March, days after Russia invaded Ukraine and began cracking down on dissent at home, Konstantin Siniushin, a venture capitalist in Riga, Latvia, helped charter two planes out of Russia to help people flee.

Both planes departed from Moscow, carrying tech workers from the Russian capital as well as St. Petersburg, Perm, Ekaterinburg and other cities. Together, the planes moved about 300 software developers, entrepreneurs and other technology specialists out of the country, including 30 Russian workers from start-ups backed by Mr. Siniushin.

The planes flew south past the Black Sea to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, where thousands of other Russian tech workers fled in the weeks after the invasion. Thousands more flew to Georgia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and other countries that accept Russian citizens without visas.
By March 22, a Russian tech industry trade group estimated that between 50,000 and 70,000 tech workers had left the country and that an additional 70,000 to 100,000 would soon follow. They are part of a much larger exodus of workers from Russia, but their departure could have an even more lasting impact on the country’s economy.

The exodus will fundamentally change the Russian tech industry, according to interviews with more than two dozen people who are part of the tightknit community of Russian tech workers around the world, including many who left the country in recent weeks. An industry once seen as a rising force in the Russian economy is losing vast swaths of its workers. It is losing many of the bright young minds building companies for the future.

“Most Russian tech workers are part of the global market. Either they work for global companies or they are tech entrepreneurs trying to build new companies for the global market,” Mr. Siniushin said through an interpreter from his office in Riga. “So they are leaving the country.”

The recent exodus reverses 10 to 15 years of momentum in the Russian tech industry, said Konstantin Sonin, an economist at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy, who immigrated from Russia to the United States. “It is now like the ’90s, when whomever was able to move moved out of the country,” he said.

Tech is a small part of the Russian economy compared with the energy and metals industries, but it has been growing rapidly. The loss of many young, educated, forward-looking people could have economic ramifications for years to come, economists said.

“The long-run impact may be more significant than the short-run impact,” said Barry Ickes, head of the economics department at Pennsylvania State University, who specializes in the Russian economy. “Eventually, Russia has to diversify its economy away from oil and gas, and it has to accelerate productivity growth. Tech was a natural way of doing that.”

Workers left the country because they objected to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, no longer wanted to live under the Putin regime and feared they could not speak their minds if they remained. Working in tech, a comparatively lucrative industry, they had money to flee the country. And like other tech workers globally, they could continue their work from anywhere with a laptop and an internet connection.

Others left because their companies pulled them out.

After foreign governments imposed sanctions on Russia and many American and European companies stopped selling products there or barred access to banking and internet services, some Russian tech workers did not have the tools needed to do their work. Companies struggled to pay them.

Some worked for companies based in Russia and others for companies with headquarters elsewhere. Many start-ups in the United States and Europe — including many founded by Russian-born entrepreneurs — relied on software coders, engineers and other tech workers in Russia. To Russian entrepreneurs living abroad, these workers were a known quantity, and they were not as expensive as specialists in Silicon Valley and other parts of the United States.

StudyFree, a San Francisco start-up that helps students find university scholarships and grants, employed about 30 workers in Russia, but keeping them there became a liability, so the company has moved them out, said Dasha Kroshkina, the company’s Russian-born founder.“We will not be able to attract as much funding if we still have employees in Russia,” she said.

Russia's defence ministry says the Moskva - its flagship in the fleet - has sunk, state media reports

[Image: 299f2724-75d4-4e4f-bb7b-32781a438222.jpg]

There have been conflicting reports throughout the day about the cause of the explosion onboard the Russian warship Moskva, which has reportedly now sunk.

The flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet was being towed to port when "stormy seas" caused it to sink, according to a Russian defence ministry statement.

The 510-crew vessel was an important symbolic and military target, and has led Russia's naval assault on Ukraine.

Ukraine claims it struck the warship with its missiles, but Russia has made no mention of an attack.

Earlier, Russia had said there was a fire on board after ammunition exploded.

Western officials have said that Ukraine's claims to have struck the ship with a missile are the most credible.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus has described Russia's admission that its flagship has sunk as a "rare moment of truth".

Russia asks Brazil to help keep sway at IMF, World Bank

BRASILIA — Russia has asked Brazil for support in the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the G20 group of top economies to help it counter crippling sanctions imposed by the West since it invaded Ukraine, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov wrote to Economy Minister Paulo Guedes asking for Brazil’s “support to prevent political accusations and discrimination attempts in international financial institutions and multilateral fora.”

“Behind the scenes work is underway in the IMF and World Bank to limit or even expel Russia from the decision-making process,” Siluanov wrote. He did not elaborate on obstacles to Russian participation in those institutions, and his allegations could not be independently verified.

The letter, which made no mention of the war in Ukraine, was dated March 30 and relayed to the Brazilian minister by Russia’s ambassador in Brasilia on Wednesday.

“As you know, Russia is going through a challenging period of economic and financial turbulence caused by sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies,” the Russian minister said.

Asked about the letter, Erivaldo Gomes, the Brazilian Economy Ministry’s secretary of international economic affairs, indicated that Brasilia would like Russia to remain part of discussions at multilateral organizations.

“From Brazil’s point of view … keeping open dialog is essential,” he said. “Our bridges are the international bodies and our assessment is that these bridges have to be preserved.”

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last week that the United States would not participate in any G20 meetings if Russia was present, citing the invasion.

Almost half of Russia’s international reserves have been frozen and foreign trade transactions are being blocked, including those with its emerging market economy partners, Siluanov said.

“The United States and its satellites are pursuing a policy of isolating Russia from the international community,” he added.

Siluanov said the sanctions violate the principles of the Bretton Woods agreements that set up the IMF and the World Bank.

“We consider that the current crisis caused by unprecedented economic sanctions driven by the G7 countries might have long-lasting consequences unless we take joint action to resolve it,” he wrote to Guedes.

Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who visited Moscow just days before the invasion, has kept Brazil neutral in the Ukraine crisis and has not condemned the invasion, drawing criticism from the Biden administration.

Bolsonaro expressed “solidarity” when he visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on Feb. 16 about a week before the invasion began.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca has said Brazil opposes the expulsion of Russia from the G20 as sought by the United States.

“The most important thing at this time is to have all international forums, the G20, WTO, FAO, functioning fully, and for that all countries need to be present, including Russia,” Franca told a Senate hearing on March 25. 14-04-2022, tình hình chiến sự Ukraina ngày thứ 50:

1. Tàu chỉ huy của Hạm đội biển Đen, tuần dương hạm Moscow, niềm tự hào của hải quân Nga đã bốc cháy dữ dội ngoài khơi Ukraina.
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/04/14/...392817.jpg
https://twitter.com/i/status/1514523776838426628

https://twitter.com/WalkerSheva239/statu...4633132032
https://twitter.com/nazmulmarketer1/stat...3912729606

https://twitter.com/aroseblush/status/15...3324503050

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellingcat

https://twitter.com/i/status/1514662897930018842
https://twitter.com/i/status/1514701993020907521
https://twitter.com/i/status/1514590129905668107

https://twitter.com/8r02s125558/status/1...6553914376

https://twitter.com/Billbrowder/status/1...9815915529

Trong khi đó, Bộ trưởng Bộ Ngoại giao Nga, Sergey Lavrov lại phàn nàn rằng „phương Tây đang tiến hành chiến tranh kinh tế với Nga, vi phạm các thỏa thuận giao thương quốc tế”, và do muốn „làm suy yếu và hạ nhục nước Nga” chứ không phải do cuộc chiến ở Ukraina.

https://twitter.com/Channel4News/status/...1843190789

Thủ tướng Phần Lan mặc áo có in hình NATO:
https://twitter.com/tedolsonjr1/status/1...4839905295

Viva Ukraina.
